SAMOHI The leadoff hitter is usually only asked to get things started, but Alex Turner is the type of guy who takes things into his own hands. “If I’m on first, I’m looking to score,” said Turner. Smartphone art maker Local debuts passion for photography at the Hangar Gallery BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer

CALIFORNIA AT OCEAN It seems like every denizen of the Westside is empowered with a smartphone equipped with a camera, and they use them, for good or for ill. Pictures of the Santa Monica Pier abound, as do surreptitious shots of high-priced meals at fancy restaurants snapped before disapproving waiters can discourage the practice. A light treatment with photoediting app Snapseed for color saturation and clarity, and the images are ready to go. His work has won widespread recognition within the Instagram photo community — one of the

romance “Silver Linings Playbook” was named best picture Saturday at the Spirit Awards honoring independent film. “Silver Linings Playbook” led with four wins, including best actress for Jennifer Lawrence and director and screenplay for David O. Russell. “The Sessions” earned two acting prizes, for John Hawkes as a man in an iron lung hoping to lose his virginity and Helen Hunt as the sexual surrogate helping him through it. The award for best supporting actor went to Matthew McConaughey as a flamboyant stripper in “Magic Mike.” In barely three years, Lawrence has risen SEE SPIRIT PAGE 11
