basketball team’s quest for back-to-back championships began with a 52-39 win over Moreno Valley Rancho Verde Thursday on campus. The Vikings overcame 20 turnovers to win the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division 1AA game to advance to face Laguna Hills on Saturday at home. That game is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Vikings were led by Long Beach State-bound Bianka Balthazar’s 18 points. Moriah Faulk, who has signed to play for UCLA, added 9 points. “I’m a harsh grader,” said point guard Kristina “KJ” Johnson, who will play for the University of the Pacific next year. “So I give our effort a C. We committed too many turnovers.” Despite the spotty play with the ball, Johnson said that the team came through when it mattered during a second half surge that put the game away. But, before Samohi could take control of the game, Rancho Verde did its best to upset the No. 7 seeded Vikings. Despite being down from the early moments of the game, Rancho Verde was able to cut Samohi’s lead to just 3 points mid-way through the second quarter. Board approves potential teacher layoffs BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer
SMMUSD HDQTRS The Board of Education approved a resolution Wednesday giving it the ability to eliminate nearly 12 positions
before the next school year. The cuts depend on the state of the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s financial health, which has been threatened by lower enrollment figures, loss of state funds for special education pro-
grams and the potential loss of the Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School to charter school status. “We had to start making interesting SEE LAYOFFS PAGE 9
police are attempting to find the passenger in the Camaro that was involved in the Feb. 12 accident that killed a 23-year-old motorist. Sgt. Jay Trisler said the driver of the Camaro told investigators that there was a male passenger in the car with him at the time of the accident. “We are attempting to obtain information on that person and find him,” Trisler said. The accident occurred at 3 a.m. last Saturday. The driver of the Camaro and the driver of a 2004 Honda Accord were racing west down Wilshire Boulevard near 20th Street when the two cars sideswiped each other. The Accord slammed through news racks and collided with a palm tree on the side of the road, killing the driver. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the racing or the crash to call (310) 458-8495. ashley@smdp.com
