Pigs Fighting for Respect: Pigs’ personalities are distributed much like humans’, according to patiently observant British researcher Niamh O’Connell (interviewed for a November story in London’s Daily Telegraph). Except for the largest ones, pigs are of two types: pushy ones that always fight for food and choice sleeping space, and meek ones that avoid confrontations. According to O’Connell, the aggressive ones have higher stress levels and make poorer parents, and besides, they ultimately lose out when they challenge the alpha pigs.

SMMUSD HDQTRS. — Schools Superintendent John Deasy has entered into contract negotiations to become the top education official in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The board of education for Prince George’s County Public Schools announced Thursday that Deasy, 45, was chosen as the top candidate for the chief executive officer position, beating out two other finalists from New York and Kansas, respectively. “I am pleased to report that Dr. Deasy is the lead candidate as a result of being the clear consensus choice of the board and our many stakeholders,” said Charles M. WILSHIRE BLVD. — Elected officials are telling residents to put the brakes on before getting too excited about the possibility of extending the subway to Santa Monica. Would-be riders ditch the car keys at their own peril, for there is no guarantee that the Metro Red Line will be extended from the station at

Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue all the way to the coast. That extension would cost an estimated $4.8 billion and may not be completed until 2015, or longer, according to a report released Wednesday by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA). The Santa Monica High School Symphony Orchestra has hit the big time. After being chosen by the LA Philharmonic Association to be the first public high school ensemble ever to perform at the Disney Concert Hall in downtown LA, Samohi students will take the stage for a rare and noteworthy performance on Sunday. Since opening in the fall of 2003, the Walt Disney Concert Hall has already had its share of

magical performances, with patrons experiencing the masterworks of artists from Beethoven to Mozart. Home to the worldrenowned Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Disney stage commands from its performers immense talent, incredible work ethic and, foremost, a passion for their art. Under the guidance of awardwinning director Joni Swenson, the Samohi symphony orchestra will open a four-installment concert series entitled “Sounds About Town.” See SYMPHONY, page 10
