REED PARK — With weather forecasters calling for a warm, sunny weekend with blue skies, it’s all systems go for some scrappy seniors ready to put a whooping on their competitors across the net. After rains put a damper on play here last weekend here, the USTA-sanctioned 57th Annual Senior Tennis Tournament should go off without a hitch. In all, more than 100 competitors will have participated over the two-week long tournament. Players are grouped into five-year age brackets, from 35 to 80. Wiping slates clean City’s experimental homeless court is now in session BY KEVIN HERRERA Daily Press Staff Writer
CITY HALL — As he walked out of the City Council Chambers on Friday, David Adams let out a long sigh of relief. Moments earlier, Santa Monica
Superior Court Judge Bobbi Tillmon dismissed several citations filed against Adams by the Santa Monica Police Department for minor infractions such as smoking marijuana on the beach. The dismissals were made in exchange for Adams’ participation in the new Homeless Community Court, a pilot project funded by the county and City Hall to help the chronically homeless get their lives back on track by linking them to services in exchange for clearing their criminal records, which oftentimes prevent them from obtaining employment and housing. Friday marked the first session of
the court, which has been a year in the making. “This means everything to me,” said Adams, 49, as he clutched a bottle of water and brown paper bag filled with snacks that Tillmon prepared for those who participated. “This is a chance for me to clear the wreckage of my past and move on with my life.” A resident at the transitional living facility SAMOSHEL, Adams said he has been able to access counseling and other services that have helped him remain drug and alcohol free for the
