Program glitches rankle teachers, parents BY ASHLEY ARCHIBALD Daily Press Staff Writer

SMMUSD HDQTRS Web developers and school district staff are begging parents and teachers’ patience with a web-based applica-

tion meant to provide easy access to student information that has resulted in missing grades and faulty transcripts. The system, Illuminate, is an all-in-one application that allows teachers to record attendance, grades, behavior records and

other information and gives parents the ability to track their children’s assignments and grades. It’s been targeted by parents who had difficulty getting through to the information and by teachers who have complained that

the system is difficult to use and loses information they put in, wasting their time. Many of the problems are a matter of working out the kinks as massive amounts of SEE GRADING PAGE 8

Local indie filmmakers up for Oscars BY COLIN NEWTON Special to the Daily Press

CITYWIDE Even though Hollywood is the movie Mecca, this year’s Academy Awards will see Santa Monica as a town that loves independent film companies. When the contenders for the 84th Academy Awards were announced, independent companies took 60 nominations in different feature categories. Some of the companies — including GK Films, Lionsgate, Mandate Pictures, Myriad Pictures and Summit Entertainment — are based in Santa Monica. “We’re very proud of our Santa Monica roots and we’d love to bring home Oscar gold for Santa Monica,” said a Lionsgate spokesperson. Lionsgate, located at 2700 Colorado Ave., moved to Santa Monica from Marina del Rey in 2003. The company produced and distributed “Warrior,” an action/drama about two brothers and their alcoholic father, played by Nick Nolte. Nolte was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film. Summit Films produced “A Better Life,” which follows a gardener in East L.A. as he struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while trying to give his son the opportunities he never had. It stars Demián Bichir, who has been nominated in the Best Actor category. Lionsgate announced it had purchased Summit Films on Jan. 13, 2012. Independent production company GK SEE OSCARS PAGE 10
