see the light of day again as the City Council will be asked tonight to spend $800,000 to reopen the aeronautical archives at a new site near Airport Park. The bill attached to the new museum is among the approximately $9.1 million in spending items — from desktop computers for City Hall to medical examinations for city employees — that the council could sign off on at its meeting tonight. The Museum of Flying has been out of commission since 2002 when the facility was closed due to a lack of funding necessary to keep operations alive. The museum was founded as the Donald Douglas Museum and Library in 1974 in a building on Airport Avenue that is now occupied by Santa Monica College. In 1989, the museum moved to the Supermarine Complex on Donald Douglas Loop North where it remained until 2002. In response to public demand for the revitalization of the museum, the staff at the Santa Monica Airport began examining possible locations, including the former city park’s maintenance division facility at 3011 Airport Ave. — located next to the Barker Hangar — and an office building about 300 feet east, which is adjacent to the DC-10 monument and Airport Park.
