THE ART LOVERS ISSUE
City nears museum deal with Broad Foundations BY NICK TABOREK Daily Press Staff Writer
CITY HALL Negotiations to bring a contemporary art museum financed by billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad to Santa Monica’s civic center are close to complete, several city officials said Wednesday. The terms of the agreement would require
approval from the City Council, which could vote on the museum deal as early as Tuesday. “I feel that the vast majority of issues have been discussed thoroughly and agreed to,” City Councilman Bob Holbrook said. The museum agreement had not been placed on the council’s agenda for next week by press time Wednesday, but Holbrook said the only remaining sticking point was the legal lan-
guage locking in the museum’s endowment. “It’s my understanding that we’re going to have a staff report on the agenda for next Tuesday [that will] make a recommendation to us on a variety of deal points for moving forward on the project,” said Councilman Richard Bloom. If approved by the council, the agreement with the Broad Foundations would be a
major win for City Hall, which since November has been competing with Beverly Hills to attract the museum. A third, undisclosed location for the museum also has reportedly been in the running. Neither City Manager Lamont Ewell nor a spokeswoman for the Broad Foundations SEE MUSEUM PAGE 10

New Web site tracks leaf blower violations BY NICK TABOREK Daily Press Staff Writer
CITY HALL Call it an act of vigilantism for the 21st century. If you’re fed up with hearing gardeners use noisy, illegal leaf blowers in your neigh-
borhood you can now take matters into your own hands, via e-mail. Not by writing to the cops, but by e-mailing the Web site stopleafblowers.com, the brainchild of an anonymous Santa Monica anti-leaf blower activist. Started about six months ago, the aim of the site is to create a calendar showing prob-
able times and locations where illicit leaf blowing will occur. Based on observations and tips, the site predicts, for example, that today leaf blowing will take place on the 2200 block of 20th street at 10:15 a.m. SEE LEAF BLOWERS PAGE 11

contribute immediately to Santa Monica’s girls basketball team has been denied eligibility by the California Interscholastic Federation. CIF Southern Section officials determined in late December that Bianka Balthazar, a junior from Arizona, had prior contact with a coach who was previously on staff at Samohi. Such activity is a violation of CIF bylaw 510 under “prior contact,” CIF Director of Communications Director Thom Simmons said. “The coach in question met the studentathlete through a club situation,” Simmons said. It is common for high school staff to coach club teams during the offseason. As a result of CIF’s ruling, Balthazar will be required to sit out the season, but will be allowed to attend Samohi. She will not be allowed to play for the team until Oct. 13, 2010, one year from the time she enrolled at Samohi. Simmons said that she is allowed to practice with the team, but is prohibited from competing during games or scrimmages. He added that the school will face no sanctions as a result of the decision. Head Coach Marty Verdugo said late last month that the team will file an appeal, but was unsure how long that process would take. Samohi is scheduled to return to play on Jan. 9 at Redondo. The Vikings are 8-4 on the season. daniela@smdp.com
