
YourResidentialStaff:
The ResidentDirector(RD) is amember ofthe Office of ResidentialExperience staff and is responsible for developing and nurturinga safe,inclusive,andengaged residentialcommunity. The RD provides supervision to theundergraduateResident Advisor(RA) position through mentorship, supervision,and engagement. Each RD ofa building/floor is a caring presence,accessibleto all residents, who supports, inspiresand challengesresidentsto achieve academic and personalsuccess.
The ResidentAdvisor(RA) is amember ofthe Office of Residential Experiencestaff andis directly responsible forthe functionsof their floor/hall within theSaint Mary’sCollege residential community. The RA is assigned to a living group andis responsible for fostering a senseof community and promotinga quality environment for allresidentsthrough weekly engagement opportunities, check-ins with residentsand supporting community guidelinesthat allow allresidentsto co-exist. All RA responsibilities support the development and growth ofthe residential community andstudent learning.
ABMCustodialStaff
The CustodialServicesTeam under FacilitiesServices (contractedthrough ABM services) is responsible for keepingthe campus community, particularly theresidential buildings,clean. They performroutine services in all common bathroomsof residencehalls daily and perform special cleaning services on a periodic schedule,weekly,in suite- andtownhouse - style accommodationson campus. Their work includes emptyingof compost,recyclingandwastereceptacles, floorcleaning andrestroomcleaning, disinfecting, replenishment of paper andsoap suppliesall between 9AM and 5PM duringtheweekdays.
MaintenanceStaff
The FacilitiesServicesteam serves the entire campus community, overseeingthegrounds,maintenance, infrastructure and sustainability of allon-campusfacilities. The residential community has access to submit maintenance work ordersfor facility-relatedissueswithin their residential rooms,hallways, common areas and overallresidentialbuilding. Maintenancestaffmay access residential buildings and roomsto address any maintenance-related issuesand/orfor preventative maintenance. For any campus-wide impacts, Facilities will work with theCampusHousing Officefor communicating and disseminating pertinent information.
ResidenceHallAssociation
The ResidenceHall Association (RHA)is the programming boardof the Office of Residential Experience. RHA collaborates with other student organizations andresidential staff to provideengagement and advocacy opportunitiesin theresidence halls.
Eligibility&HousingRequirements:
Residentialstudents must befull-time, enrolled students at Saint Mary’sCollege for the current term of residency.Exceptionsonly include graduatestudents,whose enrollment requirements forfull-time status differs from theundergraduaterequirements. Students failingto maintain full-timestatus must seek approval, in writing, forPart-Time Enrollment and residency.
First year students are requiredto live on campus,per the first year residency requirement.Exceptionsto thisresidency requirement must be approved for exemption through the First Yearexemption process through theDean of Students.
All residential students are requiredto have a mealplan whilelivingon campus. Meal plan optionsavailable to residents are basedon residentialbuildings androoms/suites with kitchen access,etc.
StarRezHousingPortal:
Saint Mary’sCollege ofCaliforniautilizes the software “StarRez” asthe housingoccupancy management system. TheStarRez HousingPortal can be found via my.stmarys-ca.edu as oneof the apps for studentsto access utilizingtheirsingle sign on information (SMC credentials). Allhousingapplicationswill be completedon theStarRez HousingPortal. Additionally,theStarRez HousingPortaliswhere students complete administrative housing formssuch as the meal plan changeform, room change form, early move-in requests,latestay requests, etc., and students are able to login at any time andreviewtheir current orupcomingroommates andsuitemates by accessingthe “My Housing Information” page.

Each Living Learning Community has an academicfaculty orstaff advisorwho creates opportunitieswhere academically and culturally diverse studentshavea strong sense of membership in a unique community, whose purpose they understand and value, and with whomthey engage. The faculty or staff advisorwill engage with LLC studentsin classroom learning and co-curricular activities.
FERPA&ReleaseofInformation:
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act affords certain rightsto studentsconcerningtheir education records. Theprimary rights affordedare theright to inspect andrevieweducation records,theright to seek to have the records amended,andtheright to have some controlover the disclosure ofinformation from the records.
Education records are those records,which are 1)directly related to a student and, 2) maintained by an institution ora party acting forthe institution. FERPA gives students who reach the age ofeighteen orwho attenda post-secondary institution theright to inspect and review theirown records. An institution isnot requiredto disclose information from astudent’seducation recordsto the parentsof dependent students but may exercise itsdiscretion to do so. CampusHousingand ResidentialExperience do not do thisunless written approval has been granted by the student.
Parents, guardiansorother family memberswishing to contact the college regarding astudent’s conduct, academic, or financialinformation must have a FERPA Authorization to Release Information Form on file with that specific student. This release states that thestudent gives a specific individualpermission to access certain information regardingtheir student records. Without arelease ofinformation on file,no college official can share any information with anyoneother than thespecific student. FireSafetyExpectations: Fire Safety
All students are expectedto observethe following regulationscriticalto theprevention ofresidence hall fires:
1. Theuse or possession of any dangerous chemical or explosive material,including but not limited to, fireworks, gunpowder, gasolineor propaneis prohibited within theresidence halls.
2. Tampering with fire alarms,fire sprinklers,smokedetectors orfire extinguishers isa violation ofstatelaw and is prohibited.
3. Proppingopen doors forany purpose otherthanemergency evacuation is prohibited.
4. Room doors,breezeways, corridors,stairways,and buildingexits must bekept clearof obstructionsat all times. Balconies,breezeways and patios must notbe used as storage areas.
5. All students andguests must evacuate any building in which a fire alarm soundsin accordance with all local, state and federallaw.
6. Studentswho continually activate afire alarmbecause of cookingor preventable circumstancesmay result in the student receiving disciplinary action and/or aservice fee.

Services/Amenities:
Kitchens
Many residence hallshave a community kitchen area. Residentswho use thekitchen area are responsible for cleaning thekitchen afteruse.
Laundry Rooms
Washers and dryers are provided by CampusHousing in all residencehalls.Thelaundry facilitieswithin each hallare to beused solely by theresidentsofthe respective hall, ifnot shared by another building. If a resident allows anon-resident to use the laundry facilities,the resident’s account may be charged. Use of thelaundry facilitiesis included in thehousinglicense andthere is no chargeto utilizethe washers and dryers. It is recommendedthat residents use the CSCGo website orApp to track theirlaundry. If awork order is needed to repaira washingmachineor dryer,please submit a request on theCSCGo website.
Private Mail Boxes
All residential students will receive a key to their Private Mail Box when pickingup theirresidence hall room keys. Residentsare to ensure that they do not losetheirkey andthat ifthe key is lost they report it directly to the Post Office. Allletter/magazine mail as well assmall packages will be deliveredto your PMB.

ResidenceHallEnvironment:
Keys&lockouts
All residential students will receive a key to their residence hall room. Residents are to ensure that they do not lose theirkey andthat ifthekey islost they report it to Campus Housing. CampusHousingwillissue a newkey to the student and add a$100 lost key charge to their student account.
If a residentialstudent gets lockedout oftheir room between thehoursof 8:30am -4:30pmthey can go to Campus Housingto get a loanerkey. After4:30pmthey can contact CampusSafety. All residentialstudents get one free lock out,any lock outs after that willresult in a$25 Feewhich willbe addedto their student account. A lockout is defined asboth astaff member opening astudent’s door and campushousing temporarily distributinga loanerkey to residents. Loanerkeys are to be returnedto campus housingby the end ofthebusiness day or studentsmay incur additional fines.
BuildingSecurity&PersonalSafety
In order to access aresidence hall students must utilizetheir room key to get in. Allof thehallshave different locks. Residential students can only access thehallthey are assignedto. Residential studentsare responsible forkeepingtheir doors and windowslocked.
Each residential buildinghas staff that is available to support students in any kindof emergency. The Resident Advisors (RA’s) are on duty everyday starting 8:30 pm to 7:30 am. The RA’sare responsible for doing rounds ofthebuildingto ensure everythingis normal.
The emergency numbers are locatedaroundthehalls as well asthe evacuation information.Each residential suite/roomhas more information about campus safety attachedto their main door.
EntryofStudentRooms
Whilethecollegehasthe right to enter a residential room. The college gives students a minimumof 24 hoursnotice before doingso. When therooms are entered the staff knocksthreetimes whileannouncing who they are orthe department they work for. If after the thirdknock the residents do not open the door the college staff willkey into the room.

Parking
Parking andvehicleuse regulations are designed to provide for orderly parking aswell asthe safeflow of traffic on campus. Recreational vehicles (RVs) are not permittedon campuswithout prior written approval from theExecutive Directorof CampusSafety & Transportation.
All non-visitor motorvehicleson campusmust be registeredwith theDepartment ofCampusSafety and Transportation and must properly display the appropriateparkingpermit at all times.
For information on obtaining and paying for a parking permit,please visit theCampusSafety website: stmarys-ca.edu/public-safety. Daily visitor parking permits may be purchasedat themachinesin visitor lots andSoda Center lots. Violation of these regulations may result in violation notices, vehicle immobilization,towing, loss of parking privileges orreferral to thestudent orstaff discipline process. At its discretion, theCollege may remove andimpoundmotor vehiclesor bicycles blockingthe entry orexit of any buildingon campus, if foundimproperly parkedorabandoned.
Recycling/Trash
In each room around campusthere will be ablack trash bin aswellas a separaterecyclingbin.These bins are provided by our ABM cleaning services. On a monthly basis,ourABM cleaning services willclearout the trash bins in suiteandtownhouse styleresidentialrooms andreplenish trash bags. There are large dumpstersneareach residencehallwith limited compost bins around campus. It isexpectedthat each resident will clearout theirrecyclingandtrash binsas they fillup in their residentialspace.
RoomSwitchRequests
Residents sometimes considerchanging rooms due to roommate conflicts. In most cases,these conflicts can be resolved through discussion, mediation, and compromise. Studentsare highly encouragedto talk to theirresidentialstaff priorto requestinga recommendation for a room change.
If residents are interestedin aroomchangeduetopersonalpreference of roomtype, orlocation.They can contact Campus Housingto request the form. Unauthorized room changes are not permitted.
Room changesubmissionswillonly be available between week 3 andweek 6 ofeach semester. Room changes may happen afterthat, but no newsubmissionswillbe accepted. Room changes may only be made by the Campus Housing Office andupon therecommendations oftheOffice of Residential Experience. Generally, allstudents involved in the room change must bein agreement before changes are made (when the switch is a room swap).
In casesof irreconcilable roommate/suitemateincompatibility,the student filingtherequest will be requiredto relocate. In cases where all roommatesrefuse to move, the Campus Housing Office may,on the
recommendation of the Office of ResidentialExperience, reassign all residents of aroom to alleviate a conflict. The CampusHousing Office may relocate,and groupstudents asneeded. Students who change room typesthrough an approved room change are expectedto pay thedifferencein cost to the Business Office in a timely mannerto avoid late feesand penalties.
RightofEntry
The Collegewillrespect students' right to be freefrom unreasonable searches and intrusions into the student living area. However,College officialsmay entera student's residencewith orwithout notice under certain circumstances.
The Collegereservesthe right to enter and searcha student's roomor apartment for reasons pertaining to health, safety, generalwelfare,necessary repairsor improvements, and/or to ensure compliancewith Collegepoliciesand guidelines. Collegeofficials also may enter a student roomon the premise that an action violating college policiesor stateor local law did oris about to take place.
ConsentforPhotographsandVideos
Saint Mary’sregularly takesphotographs and videos (including sound recordings)of campus activities and eventsto document and share these activitieswith itsown community andthepublic. By coming onto or enteringthecampus, orby being an enrolled student you understand and agreethat yourimage and soundmay becapturedin photographs, video orotherelectronic format foruse by Saint Mary’s. These images may betaken in common areason campus, event venues, includingbut not limitedto,athletic events, concerts,lecturesor speechesopen to thecommunity, organizedor impromptu campusevents, ralliesor any other campus activity.By enteringthecampus, you authorizeSaint Mary’s to use your likeness in print and electronic materials createdforthepurpose ofsharing andtellingthe Saint Mary’sCollege story. Thisauthorization shall beirrevocable,perpetual,transferable, royalty free, and worldwide. AbandonedProperty
When studentsleave property in theirresidence hall room, CampusHousingor ResidentialExperiencestaff will removethe property at a chargeto the student. Additionally,a storage fee of$10 perday may be charged to the student for a maximumof sixty days. If theproperty isnot claimed at the end ofsixty days, it is considered abandonedproperty andthecollegedisposesofthisproperty. Ifa student wishesto claim theirproperty during the sixty days,they are required to contact CampusHousing to makearrangements.
AccommodationsforOn-CampusHousing
Campus Housingdoesnot guarantee preferencesof residentialstudents. This includespreferences ofroom style,residencehall building,etc.Should any student needhousing-specific accommodations, the student must work with the Office ofStudent Disability Services to receive approval based on an intakeand documentation. AlcoholandOtherDrugs
Theuse of drugs,including alcohol, can have anegative effect on your student life andacademic success. At Saint Mary’s College, weare committedto providing an atmosphere of creativelearning and healthful living for studentsandhave put into effect policiesthat do not allow theillegaluse of alcoholandother drugs, on or off campus.
Campus Housingand ResidentialExperiences alcohol and otherdrugspolicy follows all local, state, and federal laws. Please note,studentsunderthe influence orin possession of alcoholorother drugsthatare violatinga local,state,or federallawon SMC’s campus can becited by Campus Safety.

Animals(EmotionalSupportAnimals-ESA)

Appliances
Residents’ safety isatop priority for CampusHousing and ResidentialExperience. Additionally, building electrical circuitshave limited power loads so approved appliances are limitedto preserve consistent powerto each resident’s room. Residents are ONLY allowed to use the following listed appliances from below in common areakitchens. All otherappliances willneedto be approved through Campus Housing in writing.

No more than six (6) persons may be on atownhouse balcony outsidethesuite ofa townhouse at any onetime. Alcoholisnot allowed on balconies, breezeways, courtyards,or patios,which are considered public areas.Barbecues, cooking, refrigerators and/or other appliancesare not allowed on balconies, breezeways,courtyards,orpatios. No materials, including but not limited to flags and banners,may behungon balconiesor breezeways without permission from Residential Experience.

Saint Mary's College allowsstudents and student organizationsthefreedomto use outdoor BBQ grillsfor the purpose of achieving positive social interactionsand community,while accepting responsibility forthe use of the BBQ grillson campus. As with any otherscheduled ornon-scheduledsocial event,the sponsoring/attending studentsorstudent organization is responsible for managing the event involving the BBQ grillswith concern forthehealth and safety ofindividuals present at the event. Allpoliciesand proceduresof the College must be followed at alltimes. Collegestaff/faculty membersor Campus Housing & ResidentialExperience staff may ask studentstodiscontinuethe use ofa BBQ grillat any time, for hazardous conditions (such as high winds, burn bans, fire season, etc.), or ifsmokeemissions become offensive to occupantsof surrounding property. Failure to comply with a request to extinguish the fire/grillingmay result in disciplinary action forthe individual or organization hostingthe event.
GuidelinesforBBQUse
• Only non-treatedwood, paper and charcoalbriquettes may beused asburning materials. It isthe responsibility of the individual/organization to provide needed materials. In addition,the individual/organization is responsible forany damage causedto surrounding groundscaused by fire/grilling.
• Firesmust be completely extinguishedimmediately followingtheconclusion oftheevent.Smoldering coals, smoke, or residualheat may indicatetheability for a fire to reignite and must have dissipatedprior to individuals leaving the area unattended. Lit firesmust always be attended.
• Unauthorized possession oruse of alcoholat theBBQ grillsis prohibited.
• BBQ grillsshouldonly beusedfor cooking food and for no other purpose.
• If fire/smokebecomesunmanageable with use ofa fire extinguisher call Public Safety: 925-631-4282.
Bicycles,Skateboards,Scooters,andotherPersonalWheeledVehicles
Residentsmust follow specific regulations whileoperatingpersonal wheeledvehicleson campus:
• Do not ridebicycles,scooters, skateboards,orother wheeled vehicles inside buildings at any time.
• Do not park and/orstore bicycles, scooters, skateboards, orotherwheeled vehicles in common-use spaces unless it isa designatedbicycle storagespace and permittedin writing by CampusHousing.This includeslounges,stairwells,hallways,kitchens,studies, and any areathat may bea safety hazard orhinder exit from roomsor buildings.
• Do not lean orpark bicycles, scooters, skateboards, orother wheeled vehiclesnearor against windows.
• Bicycles, scooters, skateboards,or otherwheeledvehicles parkedon paths, sidewalks,stairwells,and catwalks,in buildings, ornearbuilding exits may beimpounded.
• Bicycles, scooters, skateboards,or otherwheeledvehicles must be parked in racks.
• Bicycles, scooters, skateboards,or otherwheeledvehicles can bestored in individual living spaceonly if all roommatesagree.
• No electric personal vehicles (electric scooters,hoverboards) are permitted on campus.
• Following spring closing, allbikes shouldbe removed from bikeracksor possibly face impoundment.
• You may registeryour bicycles, scooters, skateboards, orother wheeled vehicleswith Campus Safety.
CombustibleMaterials
Combustible materials such aspropane, gasoline,kerosene, charcoal, and items containing combustible materials (i.e., motorcycles, motorbikes, and any other gas-poweredengines) are not permittedin residencehalls.
CommunitySpace
All residence halls provide community livingspacefor the purposesof socializing,studying, recreation,and programming. Each resident sharesin theresponsibility for maintainingthecleanliness and function of these areas, aswell asusingthe space in appropriate ways. Students are not permittedto sleepovernight in any community space. Never isa sexual atmosphere, either on TV orin the space, appropriate.
CompliancewithCollegeOfficials
Residentsare requiredto comply with the requestsof college officialsat all times. These officials include, but are not limitedto,professionalandstudent staff members of CampusHousing, ResidentialExperience, Student Life, CampusSafety,and facilities’ staff members.
Cooking&Microwaves
Cooking isnot permitted in the residencehallsother than in those areasthat are specifically designed or equipped forcookingby theCollege (i.e. loungekitchens,townhouses,and staff apartments). Kitchens in residencehalllounges are available for hall eventsand not intendedfor regular personal use. The heating of beverages, snacks, and popcorn in Collegeapproved microwaves ispermitted. Studentsmay use a personalmicrowave aslongas it does not exceed1,000 watts.
DamagestoRoomsand PublicAreas
Residentsare accountable for damageswhich occur as aresult of personalnegligence or vandalism.When foundto be responsible, a resident may be charged for damagesoccurringin public areas,as well asin theirroomor anotherstudent's room. All damage charges are billedto the student’saccount andmay be appealed in writingto theCampusHousing.
Door/WindowDisplays+Signage/Flags
No sign or display of any kindshallbe displayedtotheoutside public in any windoworbalcony of a residential living space. Limitedexceptions exist forsignsor displayssupportingevents sponsored by the Residence Hall Association, resident advisors, orapproved by theresident director. Residents are permitted to display itemson their room doors including decorations and whiteboardsto promote a positive living experience.
When decorating yourroomor room door,please refer to the guidelines below:
• Avoid materialthat a reasonable person might find offensive.
• Don’t post material that attacks, demeans, orotherwise exploitsan individualor groupof individuals.
• Do not permanently affix materialsto the doors.

Collegestaff reserve the right to ask students to remove any decorationsfrom walls, doors,windows, balconies, floors, etc. Failure to comply or repeatedoffenseswillbehandledthrough the disciplinary process.
DroppingorThrowingSubstancesorObjectsfromWindows
For the safety of everyone, residents are not permitted to drop, hang, orthrowobjects fromor at residence hall windows, balconies,or ledges. This includes,but isnot limitedto: bodily fluidsor substancesof any kind. Residentsmust also refrain from throwingobjectsthrough windowsfromtheoutside. (This policy includes throwingkeys to friendsoutside.)
EnteringandExitingBuildings
Residentsandtheir guests may enterand exit buildings only through doors designated forentry andexit. Entry and exit through windows isprohibited.
FireAlarmDrills/EmergencyEvacuationExercises
Completion of emergency evacuation drillsare required within allresidential facilitiesonce persemester. According to county regulationsand fire code,thefirst emergency evacuation drillof each schoolyear shall be conducted within 10 daysof the beginningof classes. Fire drills are a collaboration between Campus Safety, CampusHousing,ResidentialExperience and FacilitiesServices. During emergency evacuation drills, residents will learn of their evacuation location respective to their residential buildings aswellas the process andprotocolsof what to do duringand after a fire evacuation. Fire safety information and emergency evacuation locations are posted within residentialroomsand buildings throughout campus.
FireSafety
All students are expectedto observethe following regulationscriticalto theprevention ofresidence hall fires:
• Theuse or possession of any dangerous chemicalor explosive material, includingbut not limitedto, fireworks, gunpowder, gasolineor propaneis prohibited within theresidence halls.
• Tampering with fire alarms,fire sprinklers,smokedetectors orfire extinguishers isa violation ofstate law and is prohibited.
• Propping open doorsfor any purpose otherthan emergency evacuation is prohibited.
• Room doors, breezeways,corridors, stairways, andbuildingexitsmust bekept clear ofobstructions at alltimes. Balconies, breezeways and patios must not beused as storageareas.
• All students andguests must evacuate any building in which afire alarmsounds in accordancewith all local,state andfederal law.
• Studentswho continually activate a fire alarm because ofcookingor preventable circumstances may result in thestudent receivingdisciplinary action and/or aservice fee.
Furniture
As indicatedin the Housing License Agreement,each resident acceptsresidential rooms, suites and townhouse spacesas furnished andunderstands that the collegewillnot remove orstore any furniture that is providedunless approved by theCampus Housing Office. College-issued furniture must remain in the originalcondition. Any defectsor damagesto furniture within the residential buildings,including all fixtures, appliances, andfurniture may result in theresidents incurring additional fees.
GenderInclusiveHousing(GIH)
Gender inclusivehousing (GIH) isofferedto all students,without additional costs. Studentsare able to indicate interest in genderinclusive housing options directly within thehousingapplication, allowing them to viewotherstudents who wouldalso liketo livein a genderinclusive accommodation. Duringroom selection, studentsare able to self-select avariety of roomtype options across buildings by themselves or with their roommategroup,regardless of gender.
Guests&Visitation
Visitation by others in individual student roomsis permittedduring thehours of7:00 a.m. to midnight only. Guests (non-residentsof a particularhall) are expected to follow all policiesof the college. Residentsare responsible fortheir guests andall actionsoftheguestswhile in thehalls. If aguest violatestheStudent Conduct Codeorany residence hall policy,theresident will beheld responsible fortheir guest’s actions.
Guests must be escorted by aresident at alltimesin any area(excludingbathrooms). Guests are permitted to only use public restroomsor community restrooms designated fortheir identified gender.
Only guestsof thesame sex are permittedto stay overnight in a resident's room, with theadvance permission ofthe roommate/suitemates, andafterhaving notified the residencehallstaff. Cohabitation between students is prohibited. Guests may stay in a roomonly with the prior approval oftheroommate(s). No overnight guest may stay in the halls more than three (3)nights in a seven (7) day period andno overnight guest will be permitted for more than twelve (12) daystotal in any given academic year. Overnight guestsare not permitted duringfinalexamination days orduring vacation periods andother days established by CampusHousing.
Guestsshouldnever be given keysto access rooms or residencehallson campus. Guests may not beleft in a buildingwithout the resident present. Also refer to Trespassing policy. Cohabitation is defined aswhen a resident, contractedforthat room, issharing theirspace with a person who isnot assignedto that room. Cohabitation that includes behaviorthat infringesupon the roommate’sand/orliving community member’s right to privacy and sleep isPROHIBITEDand, when brought to theattention ofresidentialstaff, may result in referralto conduct and/oreviction.
IncenseandOpenFlames
Because of the risk of burningincense or an open flame left unattended, theuse of such isprohibitedin residencehalls. Candlesor lanterns may not beused even in theevent of a poweroutage. Residentsare encouragedto have flashlightsor similardevicesto provideemergency lighting. Ifthe smellisnoticed from an open flameor something burning, staff willenter to investigate.
KeysandLockouts
All residential students will receive a key to their residence hall room. Residents are to ensure that they do not lose theirkey andthat ifthekey islost they report it to Campus Housing. CampusHousingwillissue a newkey to the student and add a$100 lost key charge to their student account.
If a residentialstudent gets lockedout oftheir room between thehoursof 8:30am -4:30pmthey can go to Campus Housingto get a loanerkey. After4:30pmthey can contact CampusSafety. All residentialstudents get one free lock out,any lock outs after that willresult in a$25 Feewhich willbe addedto their student account. A lockout is defined asboth astaff member opening astudent’s door and campushousing temporarily distributinga loanerkey to residents. Loanerkeys are to be returnedto campus housingby the end ofthebusiness day or studentsmay incur additional fines.
Ledges,Rooftops,andAttics
For students’ safety andto protect against buildingdamage, residents,andtheir guests are never permittedon rooftopsorledges. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action and/or a finenot less than $50. Students are prohibitedfrom entering any secure space such as attics, basements, or mechanical rooms orclimbing railingsorexteriorsof buildings
Maintenance&RelatedServices
Work Orders
Studentslivingin theresidencehalls should submit timely maintenance work order requests viathe Facilities Asset Essentials Portal available through my.stmarys-ca.edu. Residents will enter and confirm their building,roomnumber,andincludea description of thetype of maintenancework being requested. Requests viatheFacilities Portal can be relatedtoa large variety of issues, from janitorialrequests,to plumbing issues,as well as any health and safety concerns. However, ifthere are any urgent facilities concerns such asa gasleak, alarge flood,etc., studentsshould reach out to CampusSafety at 925-6314282 for immediateassistance.
Janitorial Cleaning Schedule
The CustodialServicesTeam under FacilitiesServices (contractedthrough ABM services) is responsible for keepingthe campus community, particularly theresidential buildings,clean. They performroutine services in all common bathroomsof residencehalls daily and perform special cleaning services on a monthly cadence in suite- andtownhouse - style accommodationson campus.Theirwork includesemptyingof compost, recycling and waste receptacles, floorcleaning and restroom cleaning, disinfecting, replenishment of paper andsoap suppliesall between 9AM and 5PM duringtheweekdays.Building specific cleaning schedules will be provided to studentsupon move-in andposted throughout the residencehall.
NoxiousOdors
Any odoror aroma (including, but not limitedto, cigarettes,cigars, pipesmoke, perfume, airfreshener, dirty laundry, personal cleanliness)of such intensity that it becomes apparent and/oroffensive to others is prohibited.
PersonalizingSpace
Studentsmay decoratetheir room with lamps, rugs, bedspreads, posters, and otherpersonalizeditems as long asit doesnot damagetheroom or cause a fire safety hazard. Tapestries andotheritemshung from ceilings are not permitted. When the room isvacated, it must be returnedto itsoriginal condition. Residents in violation oftheoutlined policies may besubjectto disciplinary action and/or damage charges.
PrivateEnterprise
The assignment or lease of any collegeproperty excludes the right to use the premises forbusiness purposes,storageof salable commodities, or any purpose otherthan as a personal residence.
PublicityandLiterature
The distribution of freeliterature orcommercial advertisingis prohibited in residencehalls and at theentries or exits ofthebuildings. Other than literature about hall activities,residentialstaffwillnot distribute literature to theresidentsof a hall. Localnewspapersmay seek approval for occasional placement of newspaper samples in residence hall lobbies.
QuietHours
The primary purpose ofnoise and quiet hourregulationsisto createresidence hall environmentsthat promoteratherthan detract from effective study. Residents are expectedto adhere to quiet hours and noise level standards,and beconsiderateofothers' rightsto sleepand study, regardless of thetime ofday. Quiet hoursare in effect from 11:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, andfrom midnight to 8:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday. These hoursmay be lengthened to meet theneedsof an individual floor. During quiet hours,noise from speakers,stereos,radios,TVs, voices orany otheridentifiable source shouldnot be heard outside ofor between any residencehallrooms. Twenty-four (24) hour quiet hoursbegin the Friday before the first final exam of each semester through the close ofthe residencehalls. Allotherhours are courtesy hours in that studentsshould comply ifastaff member oranother student asks forquiet. Additionally,drum setsor any musical equipment connectedto an amplifier areprohibited.
Roommates
Residentialstaff will provide support and assistance to roommates in resolving conflicts.Each roommate has a responsibility to report any violations occurring in the residencehall room. In addition,violationof roommate agreementsthat are established with the residential staff couldleadto additional sanctions includinga possible move from the room. The Office of Community Lifereservesthe right to make administrative moves at any time.
RoommateSpace
There are times when a student has a double-occupancy license,but may live alone in a doubleroom. It is a requirement for studentsto be prepared to havea student move into that space at any time. This means the bed is available, the closetsare empty and clean, andtheroom is generally available foroccupancy at any time. Additionally,you may not refuse apotential roommate, explicitly orimplicitly. If the spaceisnot available upon entry for astudent,you willbe required to makethat space availablefor astudent to be assigned into that space andyou may be assessed a roomfee forthe periodthespace wasunavailable or until anew roommateis assignedwhichever is greater andbe referredto theOffice of Community Life. This does NOT grant you a singleroom.
RoomOccupancy
No more than two (2) guests per resident in dormitory style buildings(Central andCanyon areas)ormore than fifteen (15) people in townhouse style buildings (Becket, More,andothertownhouses),are permitted at any given time.
SanitationandCleanliness
Any action orinaction that compromises the cleanliness of thehallenvironment orthat isconsidered unsafeor unhealthy isprohibited. Upon notification, studentsshall comply with all CampusHousingand ResidentialExperience requests pertainingto correction of health andsafety violations in and aroundtheir assigned roomor in community spaces within thehall.
Health Code: All residents shall comply with city,county, andstate codes regarding health andsafety. Improperly disposingof garbage: Students are responsibleforthedisposal of personal garbage. Garbage and recycling must be properly sortedandtaken to the designatedreceptacles in ornearthe hall. Personal trash from resident rooms may not be put in community trash cans in the halls.
Cleaninggame: Skinning, cleaning,or butchering animals isstrictly prohibitedin thehalls orthe immediate vicinity.
This policy may also include, but isnot limited to, pest control; homemadetattoo andpiercings; misuse of drinking fountains, sinks, showers, andtoilets; failing to clean up afterpersonal grooming; or not cleaning up after using community spaceswithin the hall.
ScreensandWindowStops
The college considers screens andwindow stops,safety equipment. Removal ofor damageto these items may result in disciplinary action, eviction and/ora fine of$50.
SexualMisconduct
Consistent with the college’s policieson sexualmisconduct,theresidencehall communities maintaina living environment that is free from sexual misconduct. An individual foundin violation ofthispolicy will be subject to informalor formal disciplinary action. Apornographic theme in community space is never appropriate. If you needto report sexual misconduct, please contact theTitle IXCoordinator.
SmokingandTobaccoProducts
In accordancewith state law, smokingis prohibited in college buildings. This includes balconies, breezeways,and stairwellsto residencehallroomsand public areas. Out of common courtesy andin accordance with State law,we ask that smokers refrain from smokingnearentrances,windowsthat open, and ventilation intakes, and to properly dispose ofcigarette butts in appropriatereceptacles.Hookahs of any typeare not allowed to beactivatedinsideresidence hallspaces. Coals, used orunused,shouldnot be brought into the residencehalls.Electronic cigarettes and vapingdevices are not allowedto be used inside residencehall spaces.
Studentsmay establish further policies regarding distance onecan smoke from the buildingin community living agreements. Feescan beassessedto cleandrapes forthose who violatesmoking policy.
Any room damagescreated by smoking/vapingwithin the room are the responsibility of the residentsof the room.
All current California Statelaw,including possession of chewingtobacco,tobacco,e-cigarettes,vaping devices, etc., is applicable at the timeofin statement.
SolicitationsandPostings
Organizationsmay not solicit in thehallsunless approved by theofficesof CampusHousingand/or ResidentialExperience. Departments,student organizations and individuals do not have access to Residence Halls andmust not post in any area in or surroundingthe building.
Postingon the exterior ofthebuilding, doors,windows, lamp posts and light fixturesisnot permitted. Copies of fliers,posters and otherpromotional materialsmust besubmittedto the Office of Residential Experience (De la Salle Hall, room 117)for approval and postinginsidethe residential buildings. ResidentialStaff will be responsible forposting and removing fliers, postersand otherpromotional materials.
SportsintheResidenceHalls
To promoteconsideration of others andto protect facilities and fire safety equipment,residentsmay not play sports in theresidence halls. This includes,but is not limitedto wrestling, running, skateboarding, rollerblading, hover boarding, riding bicycles, and the tossing, throwing,orkickingof any itemssuch as balls. Such activity is potentially damagingto fire and safety equipment, and could cause structuraldamage. Occurrences may result in a fine, chargedto a student account for damagesand/or student conduct action.
StudentIdentification(ID)Cards
Incoming studentsare issueda photo identification (ID) card on the first day ofthesemester. Instructions for requesting a photo ID card are found here. The ID card serves as picture identification andis valid for the estimatedfouryearsof attendance at Saint Mary'sCollege(less ifyou are a transferor graduate/professional student) and providesvarious privilegesand discounts. The ID cardis multifunctional and isused for access to theJoseph L. Alioto Recreation Center, Library, and Health Centerand isusedfor entry forCollege events,including Athletic events. The ID card is also used forentry into Oliver Dining Hallandis used forotherdining venues. Studentswho are not registered are not eligibletoutilizethe privileges/discountsoftheID card. Individualsthat are not directly escorted by a building resident willbe askedto leave the building. Residents are responsible forthebehavior oftheir guests.The collegealso reserves the right to deny access to residence hallbuildingsto non-residents at any time. VideotapingandCameraUse
No person may tape,audio record,take photographs of, capture images of,orotherwise view any person in a private location without the knowledge and express consent ofthesubject orall parties. No person may distributeor share photosor recordingsof sexual activity or nudity in a private placewithout theknowledge and express consent of thesubject or all parties. Private locationsinclude, but are not limitedto,residence hall rooms andcommon areas, bathrooms, lounges, andother areaswhere residents have areasonable expectation ofprivacy.
Theuse of recording devices,including but not limited to Ringcameras orsimilar surveillance devices, is strictly prohibited within residencehalls. These devices are not permitted in residencehall rooms, common areas, bathrooms,lounges,orany other space where residentsare entitledto a reasonable expectation of privacy. This policy ensurestheprotection of all residents’ privacy andupholdstheintegrity of the community livingenvironment.
Waterbeds
Waterbeds are not allowedin residence halls.
Weapons
No person shallhave in their possession any gun,pistol,firearm, explosive, dangerous chemical,gel blaster, or otherdangerousweapon orinstrument (including but not limitedto paintball guns, “bb” guns,slingshots, bows andarrows, sparklers, swords, long knives, martial arts orotherweapons etc.) or common itemsthat are modifiedto become aweapon, and/or other flammables on college-ownedorleased property. Ammunition is not allowed in residence halls. Individuals in violation ofthispolicy shall besubject to appropriate disciplinary action including possibletermination of the individual'shousinglicense.
DisciplinaryProceduresandSanctions
ResidentialExperience,in conjunction with the Office of Community Life,addressesresidencehall behavioral problems. Belowis thetypicalOffice of Community Life Process:
The Office ofCommunity Life receivesreports fromvarious entitiesincluding CampusSafety,MoragaPolice Department,CampusHousing and ResidentialExperience staff, faculty,or other students. Allreports received are reviewed and followedup on by professionalstaff in the Office ofCommunity Life.
If a report suggeststhat astudent may have been responsible forviolatingtheSMCStudent ConductCode, ResidentialLiving Policies,or any other college policy, the Office of Community Lifewillschedule aConduct Hearing for that student with an appropriateConduct Hearing Officer.
If a report suggeststhat astudent may be in distress orin needof additionalsupport or resources, the Office of Community Life willwork to connect the student with theStudent Support Coordinator or other appropriate campusresourcesto assess the student’sneedsandhelp provide thenecessary assistance for the student.
The student willreceive written notice with thedate, time, and location ofyourhearingas well as information detailingthe alleged date and policiesthat they may have been responsible forviolating.
At the Conduct Hearing,thestudent isgiven theopportunity to explain their perspective on the incident and share any additional information they may have. Ifa student does not attendtheirmeeting, ahold will be placed on their student account until they meet with theirhearing officer.
TheHearingOfficer will decide theoutcome ofthehearing based on the conversation,the initial report, and any other available information usingthe preponderance oftheevidence.
All disciplinary records are part ofyourstudent record. Yourdisciplinary records are destroyedafter7years from your last day 14of attendance. They are in noway connectedto youracademic file andyou can request your disciplinary filefromtheOffice of Community Life by completing apublic records request.

Residence halls are open throughout the academic year, except forChristmas Break.Students must request for Christmas Housing,with additionalcosts. Saint Mary's College contracts with the Good Eating Company (GEC)to provide food service in OliverHall, The CoffeeShop, The 1928 Pub, and cateringeventson campus.TheCollegeoffers breakfast, lunch,and dinnerduring the week,and brunch and dinneronweekends. All residential students are requiredto have a mealplan duringtheir residency on campus. Meal plansare activated at thebeginningof each semester, andtypically not active duringbreak periodssuch asEaster Break,Spring Break,ThanksgivingBreak, ChristmasBreak,and Jan TermBreak. However, duringthese break periodsthere may be limited diningoptions available on campus forpurchase via boardpoints, flexdollars, cash, or credit cards. Mealplan costs are includedin thehousingcosts listedon the tuition and feespage with the exception oftheTownhousesandBecket/More residents’, where only thesmaller requiredbase meal plan is included.
Studentswho use theirboard points/Flex Dollarsthat come with your mealplan in OliverHallreceivea 19.5% discount on theirmeal purchase comparedto using cash orcredit.Students do not receivea discount at off-campus locations. Students are able to addadditional flex dollarsto theirSMC ID card via the cbord.get website. Guests are able to purchase meals at Oliver Hallwith cash or card,with pricesposted each year online andat thecashierstation.

ReusableContainersinOliverHall
Community membersshall not bringtheir own personal reusablecontainers to bring food out from Oliver Hall. Community members may only use GEC provided reusable containers when wantingto bringout food from Oliver Hall and during latenight dininghours. Dishes must not leavethedininghall. Studentsfound in violation - refer to misuse of college property
