LEAD WITH AN EDGE
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
The St. Mary’s College of Maryland environmental studies curriculum forges connections between theory and practice, helping you develop the skills and knowledge necessary for measuring, monitoring, and managing natural and human systems. That means rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty through activities like service learning at the campus farm; wading into the wetlands to collect data; recording oral histories to foreground social justice stories at different times and scales. Outside of classes you will find a world of EMPOWERING OPPORTUNITIES including internships, independent research, directed readings, field studies, study abroad, competitively funded summer research, and distinctive upper-level independent research. Introduction to Environmental Studies (ENST100) provides everyone a strong, interdisciplinary foundation. Several science requirements and a Toolkit class ensure you are grounded with the technical skills and knowledge necessary for understanding and TACKLING COMPLEX ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS. Additional course requirements enable diverse students with broad interests to develop their interests, training, and expertise in one of three tracks: environmental science, social science and policy, or arts and humanities. A liberal-arts education is EXCELLENT PREPARATION for a CAREER IN THE SCIENCES. The liberal-arts education is broad and exposes students to connections among the many facets of life. We believe that the liberal-arts experience is more valuable and flexible than an education focused on a specific career. Our aim is to prepare students for a successful future by building skills and perspectives that they carry with them throughout their lives.
