A Rare Case of HLH with PEM Treated in KIMS Pediatrics Department Campus 5 | A rare case of Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) was treated in KIMS. It is a fatal hematological disorder associated with impaired natural killer and cytotoxic T cell function. A one-year old female baby, A Sahoo, has undergone a rare case of HLH and was treated in KIMS. The baby was healthy when she was delivered at home and she weighed 2.4kg at birth. The baby girl later had a history of intermittent fever for one month, abdomen fullness for one month and bilateral pedal edema for 4 days and red spots on right foot. She also had a history of blood transfusion. Though the baby was reported with many histories of illness, she is not reported with any chronic illness. On examination, she had pallor ++, distended abdomen with hepatosplenomegaly, and anthropometry revealed
protein energy malnutrition. Biochemical investigation revealed Vit B12, folic acid, and iron deficiency anemia. It was a very rare case. According to the report, the transformed macrophages known as hemophagocytic histiocytes can invade bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes, liver, and skin leading to multisystem organ failure. The clinical manifestations include prolonged fever, visceromegaly, cytopenias, low fibrinogen level, raised triglyceride, ferritin and soluble IL-2 receptor levels, histological evidence of benign hemophagocytic macrophage and impaired NK cell activity on flow cytometry. The overall mortality has been documented to exceed 50% and most of the patients have been reported to die within the first 2 months of treatment. HLH can be characterized into Continued on page 4

Campus 16 | The Literary and Cultural Society of KIIT Law School (KLS), Literati, inaugurated its official e-Magazine - KIITAAB on 5 July 2021. The magazine, titled “Pride” celebrates Pride Month and is an ardent tribute to the LGBT community. Prof Achutya Samanta, Founder, KIIT & KISS, as the Patron-in-Chief, is the main motivation behind such an initiative by the students of Law. Ms Sadhana Mishra, the chief guest of the event, shared her journey and personal experiences of discrimination and abuse as a transgender and how she never gave up while launching the magazine. The Faculty Convenor, Mrs Chinmayee Nanda, Assistant Professor, congratulated the whole team for successfully successfully launching the magazine. The Editor-in-Chief of the She spoke on gender equality and human rights, LGBT rights, the need for inclusion, the history of Pride Month and its celebration to the students of the society. Ms Mishra, who is a founding member of Sakha, an organization working for the rights of the transgender community, marked the launch of KIITAAB
as an innovative step. Prof Bhavani Prasad Mishra, Director, KLS promised to extend a helping hand to improve the inclusiveness of the LGBT community within the KLS. magazine, Ishaan Michael spoke about normalising sexual orientation. The Deputy Editor, Sushree Dash tried to inspire people to own their sexual identity by sharing her own journey of being a bisexual. Shubhankar Verma, Head of Public Relations introduced a mascot for the e-Magazine KIITAAB, called “Lit”, which is a gender-fluid mascot, and furthers the motto of the society, that is, “Everyone can be everything they want to be.” Pratyush Mishra, the Co-Convener of the Literati Society, elaborated on the journey of Ms Sadhana Mishra and discussed the interview conducted with her. The event was concluded with a vote of thanks by Apurba Pattanayak, a member of Literati.
KIIT sends Four Delegates to Tokyo Olympics
Campus 6 | KIIT Deemed University is celebrating a key achievement in sports after sending four delegates to the Olympic Games. Dr Achyuta Samanta, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and Founder, KIIT & KISS, acknowledged that KIIT is the only Indian university to send three athletes and an official to the Tokyo Olympics resulting from how KIIT and KISS had been promoting sport and games to their students. Remarkably, KISS has produced over 5000 sports talents at the state, national, and international levels such as the Commonwealth Games. Dutee Chand, the first athlete, is a law student at KIIT and this is her second consecutive Olympic appearance. She qualified in both women’s
100m and 200m sprints. She is the only Indian to participate in two events for two times in Olympics. C. A. Bhavani Devi, the second athlete, is pursuing a PhD Degree at KIIT and is the first Indian fencer to ever qualify for the Olympics. She is ranked 42nd in the world. In 2018, at the Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship in Australia, she became the first Indian to win a gold medal. Shivpal Singh, the third athlete, is a BBA student at KIIT who won Gold Medal at ACNW League Meeting in South Africa on 9 March 2021. The fourth delegate is Dr Sudeep Satpathy of Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) who has been selected as the Doctor of the Indian
Men’s Hockey Team for the Tokyo Olympics 2021. He is a specialist in Clinical and has numerous Olympic involvements in the past, including Sports Medicine Doctor in Rio Olympics 2016. Shri Tusharkanti Behera, Minister, Sports & Youth Services and Electronics & Information Technology, Government of Odisha joined as the chief guest while Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, IAS, Principal Secretary, Sports & Youth Services and Tourism Department, Government of Odisha joined as the guest of honor. Dr Sasmita Samanta, Pro-VC, KIIT-DU spoke on the occasion. Dr Achyuta Samanta declared two important gifts for Dutee Chand, which will be presented to her after her return from the Olympics.
