A Letter from the Head of School

Dear St. Michael’s Community Members, When we first discussed Traits for Success at St. Michael’s, I think there was some question as to why we might include Generosity as a personal measure of one’s success. As I look through these pages of our annual Donor Recognition Report, I can clearly see how generosity in our community works to define our sense of accomplishment and achievement. From teachers dedicated to reaching out to their students beyond the classroom, to parents willing to devote hours of volunteer time to the community, to Board members and alumni thoughtfully discussing future directions for our school, St. Michael’s is rich in acts of generosity, each one of which has the power to impact our students’ lives. I am proud that we are devoted to working together and sharing our gifts with each other. I am proud that our students are growing and learning in a community of kindness, courage, and generosity.

This past school year, members of the St. Michael’s community contributed another record sum of gifts to the school. Notable amongst these gifts were: • A grant from the Dana Family Foundation (for work on Mason House doorways and the Cottage Building); • A combination of grants from the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources and the Commerce Rhode Island- Renewable Energy Fund for solar panels on the Hill House roof; and • A significant grant from Sue and George Petrovas to support a variety of faculty and staff wishlist initiatives.

Once again, the school’s Board of Trustees provided dynamic leadership to our Annual Fund and devoted countless hours to discussing

thoughtful directions for our school’s future. In a fitting tribute to retiring Middle School Director, Bob Tavares, over 100 people contributed to the Bob Tavares Faculty Lecture Series Fund in his honor to sponsor an annual guest lecturer for faculty professional development at St. Michael’s.

Perhaps the truest leaders in generosity at St. Michael’s are the officers of our Parents Association Total $262,719 $416,933 $424,822 and the many parents who volunteer to support their activities. Their selfless work builds this community of caring for our children who begin to understand the power of generosity from their parents’ actions. I witnessed my first Newport House Tour run by our PA this spring and I must say that I have never been prouder of a school community.

At the end of this past school year, PA President, Sheila Powell, handed over the reins of the Parents Association to Tricia Frary.

It is with deep gratitude that I thank Sheila for her devotion to our children, to our faculty, and to our community. Sheila brings a whirlwind of energy and joy to her every endeavor and will continue to be a leader of generosity at school events and activities.

Finally, I wanted to recognize Leslie Grosvenor who led our Advancement activities for the past six years. Leslie has been a long time friend and fan of our community. Her children graduated from St. Michael’s and she served on the school’s Board of Trustees long before taking over the Advancement Office. Her passion for St. Michael’s runs deep and the success of our fundraising programs relied on her wisdom and expertise. Leslie left St. Michael’s this past June for new challenges, but those who know her understand she will remain faithfully connected to our school community.

I believe this past school year can best be characterized as as a year of reflection and planning. As a school community, we invested a tremendous amount of time and effort in both the Accreditation process and the Strategic Planning process to prepare ourselves for a new phase of growth and success at St. Michael’s.

I am so proud of John Zurn, our faculty and staff, who worked tirelessly to ensure that we were successful in receiving our 10-year reaccreditation from the Association of Independent Schools of New England (AISNE). The 18-month comprehensive, self- study process involved all faculty and staff examining every aspect of our school life and identifying our own strengths and weaknesses. This healthy, self-reflection process was followed by a site visit of the AISNE accreditation team and resulted in the successful reaccreditation of our school. Of note were several areas of commendations for which we should feel most proud and specific recommendations which, when implemented, will help strengthen our current programs and school operations.

Simultaneously last year, we embarked on creating a new Strategic Plan that will guide our efforts and resources over the next 3-5 years. That process also started with reflections in the form of Dream Sessions with students, parents, faculty and the Board of Trustees. I am eager to share the new Strategic Plan with you. It reflects the priorities and values of our school community. It outlines specific initiatives that will propel St. Michael’s towards a more dynamic and sustainable future that all members of our school community will benefit from. To all the faculty, staff, parents and students who contributed to the Accreditation and Strategic Planning process, I say “thank you” for caring so much about the future of our school.

What I am repeatedly reminded of year after year, is the level of dedication, passion and pride held by so many members of our school community. One clear example of that occurred at

the retirement celebration of Bob Tavares. The number of former students, parents, faculty and staff who returned to our campus to pay tribute to Mr. Tavares and share their personal cherished memories of St. Michael’s was extraordinary. The warmth, friendships, sense of shared community and pride was palpable that evening. It made me so grateful to be part of a school community that has teachers who want to dedicate 38 years of their careers to our students, alumni who remember their St Michael’s days as some of the best in their lives, parents who volunteer and donate generously to support the mission and vision of our school, and students who so often call St. Michael’s their second home.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge how the generosity of our school community created so many new opportunities to benefit the students and faculty of St. Michael’s. Through the Annual Fund and other generous gifts, St. Michael’s faculty participated in numerous professional development opportunities, renovation work was completed on the cottage and Mason House, new instruments were purchased for the music program, an Art History program was funded for the Early Childhood program along with large, outdoor play blocks, theater improvements, an online Math program, and funding to support the expansion of our Innovation Lab. These are just some of the gifts manifested through the generous support of our donors. We thank all our donors for their commitment to the faculty and students of St. Michael’s. Every gift at every level helps transform our school community for the better.

As a new school year unfolds, I encourage you all to be actively engaged in our school community and enjoy the rewards of being connected to a very special St. Michael’s family.

Parents Association

The Parents Association sponsored three family events, a parent reception at Ida Lewis Yacht Club, teacher and staff appreciation week and the Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour fundraising event during the 2015-2016 school year.

In addition to managing these events for our community, the Parents Association Board determined that a more simplified structure for our fundraising efforts, governance and event planning was necessary to reflect the evolving needs of our St. Michael’s families. Our goal was to focus on community building, reduce PA fundraising directed at our families and decrease the volunteer requirements on our parents with busy work schedules and other time commitments.

The Parents Association now manages one large fundraiser per year that supports PA programs and activities with the remaining funds donated to specific wish-list items for St. Michael’s. All family events are now free to members of our community. Other changes include shifting the Thanksgiving Bake Sale fundraising opportunity to our middle school students, discontinuing smaller fundraising activities, providing spirit wear through a managed, online school clothing program by Land’s End, reducing the amount of open PA meetings to three per year, and reducing the PA Board member terms to a one-year commitment.

It takes approximately $12,000 per year to run the Parents Association’s events and activities with our new structure. All income exceeding this amount is donated to St. Michael’s with specific fund allocations determined by our parents during one of the open PA meetings.

The tremendous success of our 2016 Neighborhood of Newport House Tour raised $37,957!

To date, our funds from the 2015-2016 year contributed $10,000 toward field trips for our students, $5000 toward new hot and cold boxes for our lunch program, and $4500 to improve the sound system and acoustics in the Hill House for school performances. The allocation of the remaining funds will be determined.

To begin the 2015-2016 school year, parents and staff joined the PA at Ida Lewis Yacht Club for a Welcome Party in September. It was a beautiful night overlooking Newport’s harbor to catch up with old friends after the summer and meet some of our new parents. Thank you to Bill and Andrea Breyer, PA Vice President, for hosting and sponsoring St. Michael’s at Ida Lewis and organizing this fabulous event.

Our three family events were, once again, a great success. The Fall Frenzy on the lawn of St. Michael’s and the Skating Party at the Portsmouth Abbey School ice rink were coordinated by the PA Board. The Halloween Party was co-chaired by Dawn Griffin and Debbie Amarant whose fabulous effort created a remarkable Halloween event. Many parent and staff volunteers participated in these events to make the days special and memorable for our children.

The Parents Association continues to honor our teachers and staff by sponsoring Teacher Appreciation week in May and an end of the year lunch. Karen Cadwalader, PA Vice President, chaired the Teacher Appreciation Week with a “Red Carpet-You Are a Star” theme- glitz, glamour, popcorn and appreciation included.

Our 2016 fundraiser, the Neighborhoods of Newport House Tour, was an amazing success.

Tricia Frary and Roselle McConnell, our co-chairs, and Stefanie Vieau, the PA Treasurer and marketing coordinator for the event, generously shared their time and talent to bring us the highest ticket sales in history. In addition, close to 150 parents, teachers, staff, and friends of St. Michael’s volunteered to make this event a success. It was a beautiful spring day and our guests frequently remarked on the wonderful experience, which reflected well on our school.

Parent volunteers also served as Class Parents supporting our teachers and the Parents Association. They contribute throughout the year and often help coordinate activities and get-togethers, which greatly contribute to our strong sense of community at St. Michael’s.

The Wellness Committee, coordinated by Nikki Vazquez, Bronwyn McDermott and Jacqui Colbert-Muetterties worked on plants for our teachers during teacher appreciation week, managed a plant sale at St. Michael’s Day, organized bike-to-school and walk-to- school days for our families and generally reminded all of us that green is good.

Finally, a special thank you to Andrea Breyer and Karen Cadwalader (Vice Presidents), Catie Benzak (Secretary) and Stefanie Vieau (Treasurer) who all served as our 2015 -2016 PA Board. They were volunteers at all levels in every event and met regularly to chart the direction of the Parents Association. Their contribution to our community is truly outstanding.

There is one more member of our parent community that cannot be overlooked. Joe McLaughlin is the backbone of all PA events. He sets up, works throughout the event and cleans up at the Fall Frenzy, Halloween Party, Skating Party, and House Tour. He is the man who organized the fruit for our lunch program for several years. He is also the go-to man for just about anything related to the PA and knows how every event is managed. Joe is a great trouble-shooter and logical thinker and his calm disposition has served our community well during moments of event planning chaos. Thank you Joe! St. Michael’s is a small community with large volunteer needs. The Parents Association is always seeking enthusiastic people to help us with our events and activities to support the mission of St. Michael’s. We would like to thank all the parents who have demonstrated leadership and served as volunteers during the 2015-2016 school year. We recognize the immediate results of your contributions but we would also like to thank you for contributing to the character of our students by demonstrating good citizenship.

Graduation June 8, 2016 The Class of 2016 graduated on a beautiful summer’s day beneath the canopy of a large tent spread out to the side of Mason House. This year’s graduating class, 33 students strong, was one of the largest in the history of the school. Mr. Zurn opened the ceremony encouraging the graduates to work hard for their personal success, but also to aspire to significance to others.

Next, St. Michael’s Board Chair, Bethany DiNapoli, presented two faculty members with the Canepari Family Chair Awards for community leadership and teaching excellence.

These awards were created four years ago by former St. Michael’s parent and trustee, Dave Canepari, his wife, Diane, and their two children, Jake and Sophia, who graduated from St. Michael’s in 2011 and 2013 respectively. This year’s recipients were Jessica Boyle and Christy Johnston.

Lana Gaige, Jackie Camillo, and Jack Hutchison presented Mr. Zurn with the class gift- a work of art and class portrait created by the eighth graders to be framed and hung with future class portraits.

Eighth graders, Lana Gaige and Georgie Fleming, were chosen by teachers to deliver class reflections. Abby Magruder, Class of 2003, delivered the Commencement Address.

Abby encouraged the graduates to seek out new opportunities in high school, get involved, listen to your parents, and be sure to keep a really good sense of humor!

The Bob Tavares Faculty Lecture Series Fund

In May 2016, the St. Michael’s community celebrated the retirement of our Middle School Head, Bob Tavares, with a spectacular spring celebration party.

The event was attended by St. Michael’s students, alumni, parents, past parents, trustees, past trustees, faculty, past faculty, and friends accumulated over 38 years of service to the St. Michael’s community.

The Bob Tavares Faculty Lecture Series Fund (created with gifts totalling $23,637) will be dedicated to bringing an inspirational thought leader in the area of education to St. Michael’s to provide professional development to faculty and staff on an annual basis.

The Legacy of Excellence Society at St. Michael’s Country Day School The Legacy of Excellence Society honors those supporters who have designated a portion of their assets in their will or through their estate planning to benefit St. Michael’s Country Day School. Gifts from bequests and trusts ensure the future of our remarkable school, support our mission, and help establish a lasting legacy of excellence at SMS for today’s students and for generations to come. Individuals who include the school in their estate plans become members of the St. Michael’s Legacy of Excellence Society.

Your bequest can be a specific dollar amount or a certain percentage of the balance remaining in your estate or trust after paying all debts, costs and other prior legacies. Whichever form you prefer, you can direct that your bequest be unrestricted for the general support of our mission or for a specific purpose you designate (be sure to check with us to make sure your gift can be used as intended). Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime. You can modify your gift to address changing circumstances. Established by Elise Fargnoli, Class of 2003. This endowment is Established in memory of Miles Fisk ’01, by the Parents Association, intended for alumni who wish to support St. Michael’s Country Day this endowment provides funds in support of music education at St. School in perpetuity.

Michael’s Country Day School.

Established by Elizabeth Delude-Dix, to honor her mother, and the grandmother of her son, Dermot Delude-Dix ’01, this fund supports and enhances the work of St. Michael’s dedicated faculty and honors Elizabeth C. Delude’s many years as an educator.

Established in memory of Bradford L. Dunn ’84, by the Dunn family, this endowment provides funds for faculty to attend conferences and workshops concentrating on differentiated learning. This fund also provides financial assistance to current families whose children are in need of tutoring services.

THE FACULTY FUND

Established and funded by the Class of 2004, this endowment provides funds in support of faculty, including salaries and professional development opportunities.

Established in honor of former Board of Trustees Chair, Jeffrey L. Gordon, this endowment provides funds to enrich the classroom experience through special activities, including assemblies, guest speakers, and regional field trips.

Funded by the graduating classes of 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, and 2011 this endowment provides tuition assistance for new and current St. Michael’s Country Day School students.

THE HOPE H. VAN BEUREN CLASSROOM MAINTENANCE ENDOWMENT FUND

Established by Hope H. van Beuren, former parent and current Trustee Emerita, this endowment provides funds for the maintenance of the van Beuren Middle School. *Unaudited Figures

Established through an anonymous gift of $100,000, and a second gift of $100,000 received during the 2006-07 school year, this endowment provides funds in support of financial aid.
