Athlete’s foot If you have athlete’s foot, it will not simply go away on its own, and not treating it can make it worse. The main cause of athlete’s foot is a type of fungus which often begins to spread - typically in the skin between your toes. As a reaction, your skin might become red or itchy. A moist environment alone does not cause athlete’s foot - but warm moist conditions provide favourable conditions for the fungus to grow in. You might be infected if you have any of the following signs: • itchiness or burning on the soles of your feet or between your toes • white, soggy skin in between your toes • flaky skin or small tears (fissures) on your feet or between your toes • redness and blisters on your foot’s skin If you have athlete’s foot then one of the best treatments is Lamisil Once. It’s a single dose treatment and it will start to kill the fungus immediately and will continue to work for several days. The skin will improve within a few days but may take up to 4 weeks to heel completely. Nail Infections Fungal nail infections are relatively easy to pick up and can affect anyone and everyone. Probably close to 100,000 people in Ireland may have a fungal nail infection, and the vast majority of these people have affected toenails.

Many of us often neglect our feet, and the vast majority of people will have dry skin or some other issue which needs attention. Some of the more common issues which are queried in the pharmacy are listed below along with brief advice as to the best treatments available. So why not treat your feet before the summer – your feet will thank you for it!

Left untreated, fungal infections can spread to other nails, so it’s important to treat them straight away. Signs of a mild nail infection include discolouration (white, yellow or brown), debris (under the nail), distortion, scaliness, thickening and brittleness. One of the best treatments is Curanail. This is a bottle of lacquer, like a nail varnish, that can be used for up to two nails. It’s effective against mild fungal infections that start at the tip of the nail and spread towards the base. It is used once weekly and is water and soap resistant and penetrates deep within the nail. If you’re treating a toenail infection and you also have athlete’s foot, you should ask your pharmacist to recommend a treatment for that as well. Treat both conditions at the same time (it’ll help prevent your toenail getting re-infected) Dry Skin/ Cracked Heels Many people believe that soaking dry heels in water, especially hot water, will help the skin soften and soak up water to become moist again, but hot, soapy water actually can worsen the dry skin by further removing oils. Flexitol Heel Balm is excellent treatment if you suffer from dry skin or cracked heels. It contains 25% urea in addition to vitamins which nourish the feet. It is applied twice daily to cracked heels and feet and visible results are seen in as little as 3 days. It actively replenishes the moisture deep below the surface of the skin. Once the skin is restored it should be continued to be used to maintain condition. Scholl also have a great expanded range with lots of products for dry skin and cracked heels.
