OUR PHARMACIST MARK SA JDA GIVES SOME ADVICE ON SKIN CONDITIONS THAT TROUBLE MANY CHILDREN Dermatology is the branch of medicine concerned with skin, hair and nails and the conditions that affect them. All Sam McCauley Pharmacists have recently attended a training course on dermatology. The speakers included Dr. Liam Dunne, a GP in Bunclody, with many years of experience dealing with skincare queries and Dr. Anne-Marie McGinley of The Weir Clinic, Bandon, County Cork. Both doctors have a wealth of knowledge and a great interest in dermatology and Dr. McGinley has recently completed a Masters degree in allergies including food and paediatric allergy.

Any dermatological disease that can affect adults can affect children. There are many common dermatological conditions that present during childhood and teenage years and below are listed some of the more common ones. • Eczema can be a particularly distressing condition for children as they find it difficult to resist the urge to scratch the skin, thus greatly exacerbating the condition. For mild to moderate eczema, topical emollients are used to reduce water loss from the skin, preventing the dryness normally associated with eczema. There are a wide variety of products available to assist with this and our pharmacists can advise you of exactly how best to use them to ensure that flare-ups are kept to a minimum. • Verrucas and Warts are very common in children and they're generally harmless and tend to go away on their own, but this can take months or even years. There are several treatments that you can try at home to help get rid of warts and verrucas, and our pharmacists in Sam McCauley Chemists can advise on the most suitable treatment for your child. • What's That? Wondering about that rash, or bump on your child's skin? Sickness, allergies, heat or cold are often behind children’s skin changes. Most aren't serious and are easy to treat, however if you are unsure call to one of our Sam McCauley Chemists and our pharmacist can advise whether this can be treated over the counter. • Acne is a skin disease that occurs when hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. Acne is characterised by areas of blackheads or whiteheads, pimples, and greasy skin. It commonly occurs in adolescence and affects an estimated 80–90% of teenagers! There are many treatment options available, including lifestyle changes, medications and medical procedures. We can advise on the treatment options available to help reduce the incidence and improve the appearance of acne. All of our pharmacies have private consultation rooms where we can advise you of the treatment options for your child and decide which is the most suitable, or where necessary advise you to attend your local GP. Our Sam McCauley pharmacists are experienced in dealing with children - many of them are parents themselves - and they recognise the importance of educating both the parent and the child to ensure the best outcome because we know that a happy child is a happy parent.

Our HD Brows are tailor-mapped and perfectly arched to your features, as you lie-back and relax in our beauty salon. Brow, brows, brows. Where to begin with the frame of the face? Throughout most of my teen years it was expected that you tweeze your eyebrows into an almost non-existent state. Since then a lot has changed in brow land, mainly the addition of Cara Delevinge and her brows to public life (I consider them a separate entity). This has resulted in a desire to have perfectly shaped thick eyebrows, which are hard to achieve if you spent almost a decade trying to remove them. I love my brow kit I fill in gaps left from my tweezing years, use wax to keep hairs in place and add in a little extra at the end but this takes up valuable time in the morning so I’ve been looking for something more long lasting and that’s where HD Brows come in! HD Brows consists of all the ways we normally shape our brows, your brows will be tinted, mapped, waxed, threaded, brushed and filled in that order, while that does make it seem like a time consuming process the entire treatment takes just 30 minutes! I have previously experienced everything HD Brows has to offer (albeit not together) except brow mapping, and that’s what sets it apart from other brow treatments. Brow mapping takes the shape and size of your face into consideration to create the perfect brow for you! This part of the treatment begins by marking points on your brows where they begin and end lining them up with other points on your face such as the nose. This ensures everything is in proportion

The tint used in HD Brow treatment is longer lasting than other tints and is applied first to ensure all hairs including fine ones are coloured to give maximum thickness, any excess after this will be removed by threading, waxing or tweezing. When I got the first look at my new brows I couldn’t believe the difference, to sound clichéd I never thought I would have brows that looked so defined and less sparse. It is recommended that 4-5 weeks is left between treatments initially and as the brows start to be trained into shape it can be spaced out to every 6 weeks. A patch test is needed before treatment (preferably 1-3 days before) even if you have had a brow tint before as the formula is different.

Fresh start Firstly, please tell us a bit about you and your lifestyle. What does a typical day look like? At what time do you start? How late do you finish? Monday to Friday a typical day starts with my alarm clock ringing at 5:30am. I am on air hosting the Spin FM 103.8 breakfast show from 6:45am until 9:45am followed by production meetings, planning for the following days show other bits and pieces in the office until around noon. Some days I may have free time after work to go to the gym or run some errands, other days I will go straight to another job. I still model, write and do some TV work so no day is the same. A general rule of thumb is that my weekdays are very hectic. If I’m not DJing an event or trying to cram in a gym class my average weekday will start to wind down at about 5 or 6pm, if I’m working that evening I try to have a curfew of 10pm at the latest on jobs. On the weekends I am usually travelling, either to London to see my boyfriend or on a city break of some kind or another with my business partner Martin, we run a travel site called The Travel Two as a passion project and to encourage some extra escapism. What do you like to do to chill out and for ‘me time’? I love to take a long hot shower, lather myself in coconut oil, a hair and facemask and curl up with my book. You travel a lot… you’ve just been on a trip to Sri Lanka, can you tell us more about this passion? Ever since I can remember I’ve loved the feeling of escapism and the anonymity of travel. As I’ve grown up I’ve become more interested in the life lessons and great memories. It’s a passion I won’t compromise on and something I’ve had to work hard to fit into my lifestyle, with a full time job and the usual everyday commitments

we all face, but I really feel it’s worth the extra effort. I’ve ticked off 60 countries and counting.
Loving the skin you’re in How would you describe your skin type? My skin is combination, I get dryness around my eyes and breakouts on my T Zone but for the most part I have been blessed with manageable and relatively well-behaved skin. My problem areas would be under eye circles from my early mornings and rosacea on the cheeks, which I think a lot of Irish women suffer from. What is your typical daily skincare routine? I like to keep things pretty consistent. In the mornings I will just splash my face with some cool water, pat dry, tone with some rose water and apply my Idéalia moisturiser. A little trick I have is to add a drop of Frankincense oil to my moisturiser for added glow. At night I will cleanse my skin, use my Idéalia Peeling night peel and finish with the Idéalia Skin Sleep Night Cream and some 8-hour cream on my eyes and lips for added moisture in the drier areas. How do you feel your fast-paced lifestyle impacts your skin? I think it can drain the plumpness and vitality from your face and highlight dark circles, dryness, lines and discolouration. It’s important, to me anyway, to take those 5 minutes in the morning and evening to give my skin some love. And if I’m having a particularly busy week, I’ll allocate a half hour on the weekend to do a good exfoliation and facemask and I find that bit of self love improves my overall mood and wellbeing!
What’s your “can’t live without” skincare step? (i.e. cleanse, moisturise, serum, peel, exfoliate) Definitely the moisturising part, I love when my skin is glowing during the day and helped to repair at night. What is it about Vichy and the Idéalia range that attracted you to partner with them? I need products that are quick, convenient and reliable. The Idéalia range really works for my skin and me, no matter how busy my weeks get I know I can maintain my skincare routine and feel good. I’m also very conscious of buying and supporting ethical brands that take a natural approach; Vichy ticked those boxes for me.
Real-a-Peel In addition to working very early mornings as Spin 103.8 DJ, you model, travel and blog which naturally implies a very hectic life. How do you manage to keep a good skincare routine? I can be very habitual with my skincare routine so I was sceptical as to how easily I would adapt to changing products. It took one night! The results were immediate, especially with the Idéalia Peeling and the steps were actually less time consuming than I had been doing! It’s a very manageable skincare routine, 5 minutes in the morning and the evening and people comment on my skin all the time now so it must be working! Had you ever had a chemical peel before, if so what did you like/dislike about it? I had a salon chemical peel before and I loved the results but I felt it was too harsh for young skin.
