Consequentialist Ethics: This framework focuses on the outcomes or consequences of actions. One form is Utilitarianism, which suggests that the best action is the one that maximizes positive outcomes for all individuals.

Another form of consequentialist ethics is Mohism.

According to this view, the morality of an action is determined by how it benefits the community (as compared to individuals). An action is morally right if it leads to more overall good than harm.

Deontological Ethics: Deontological ethics, often associated with the philosopher Immanuel Kant, emphasizes duties and rules. Rather than focusing on the consequences, this framework argues that specific actions are inherently right or wrong, regardless of their outcomes. For example, telling the truth is considered a moral duty, even if it might lead to negative consequences. Deontologists believe that a sense of duty should always guide our actions.

Character-Based Ethics: Also known as Virtue Ethics, this framework emphasizes the importance of developing good character traits or virtues, such as honesty, courage, and compassion. Originating from Aristotle, it suggests that a virtuous person will naturally make ethical decisions. The focus is on being rather than doing—cultivating a moral character, which thereby leads to right action.

o

Relational Ethics: This framework highlights the significance of relationships, intersectional identity, and the context of relational interactions. Feminist ethics fall under this category, emphasizing empathy, care, and the importance of personal relationships in moral decision-making. It argues that ethical behavior arises from nurturing and maintaining healthy relationships.

Instrumental vs. Intrinsic Good Understanding the distinction between instrumental and intrinsic good is crucial in ethical discussions: • o

Instrumental Good: Something is considered instrumentally good if it is valuable as a means to an end. For example, money is instrumentally good because it can be used to purchase things that bring happiness or satisfaction. Its value is derived from its utility in achieving other desirable outcomes.

o

Intrinsic Good: Something is intrinsically good if it is valuable in and of itself, regardless of its utility in achieving other ends. Happiness, pleasure, and wellbeing are often cited as examples of intrinsic goods because they are valued for their own sake, not to achieve something else.

The decision is made based on the specific consequences for the individuals involved at that moment, with the aim of maximizing the utility of the organ.

Rule utilitarianism: Proposes following rules that, if universally adopted, would maximize overall utility. It addresses criticisms of act utilitarianism, whereby the unjust treatment of someone might be said to maximize overall utility.

Example: Traffic laws, like speed limits, are established based on rule utilitarianism. The rules are designed to maximize overall safety and minimize accidents. Even if, in a particular instance, driving slightly over the speed limit might seem harmless, adhering to the rule overall benefits society by reducing the likelihood of accidents and injuries.

The German philosopher Immanuel Kant introduced one of the most important deontological approaches. He believed that we could determine our duties through reason alone and developed the Categorical Imperative, a basic principle that guides moral actions purely according to a sense of duty. The Categorical Imperative has two different principlebased formulations: Formula of Universal Law: Immanuel Kant stated, 'Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.' (Kant, 1785/1998) This principle says you should act only according to rules that can be applied universally. For instance, if you consider intentionally lying to get out of trouble, you should ask if it would be acceptable for everyone to intentionally lie in similar situations. If this leads to a contradiction or to a world in which the action you propose no longer becomes possible as more and more people do that action, then the action is deemed morally unacceptable.

Formula of Humanity: Kant's principle states, "Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end" (Kant, 1785/1993, p.

36). This principle says we should always treat people as valuable in themselves and not just use them to get what we want. This principle respects people's ability to make their own choices and their inherent worth. For example, intentionally lying to someone to achieve a personal goal uses that person and disrespects their ability to decide for themselves. Figure 1.6 summarizes Kant's categorical imperative's two formulations, the formula of universal law and the formula of humanity.

Deontological ethics can be divided into different approaches based on where our duties come from: •

Duties Based on Roles: Specific social roles come with duties. For example, in the Hindu text Bhagavad Gita, the warrior Arjuna must choose between his duty to fight in a just war and avoid harming his family. His duty as a warrior requires him to fight, showing how roles can dictate specific ethical obligations even though they might conflict with our personal desires.

•

Duties from Past Actions: Philosopher W.D. Ross suggested that certain duties are prima facie obligations, meaning they are initially binding based on past actions. For example, if someone makes a promise, they have a duty to keep it (duty of fidelity). If they harm someone, they must make amends (duty of reparation). Gratitude for others' help can also create duties (duty of gratitude).

•

Duties Based on Reason Alone: Kant’s Categorical Imperative forms the basis for understanding our moral obligations. By applying principles like the Formula of Universal Law and the Formula of Humanity, we can distinguish actions that are inherently right or wrong. Kant believed that some duties are perfect—absolute and without exception, such as the duty to tell the truth. Other duties, called imperfect duties, are more flexible and depend on situations, like the duty to help others as much as we can without sacrificing our own moral integrity.

•

Deontology and Kant’s Imperatives: Deontology values the intrinsic rightness of actions based on intentions and principles, not just outcomes. Kant's Categorical Imperative drives this approach, compelling us to adhere to universal rules and treat everyone with respect and dignity. This includes perfect duties, which are unconditional like respecting others, and imperfect duties, which allow discretion, such as improving oneself through learning. For instance, the absolute duty to treat all persons with respect contrasts with conditional duties, like pursuing medical education if one intends to become a doctor. By understanding deontological approaches, we can make better ethical decisions and recognize the importance of acting for inherently right reasons.

In today's digital age, principles of deontology offer valuable insights into ethical considerations surrounding technology use: •

Universal Application: Ethical designers should consider whether the principles guiding their creations can be applied universally when developing

technologies. For instance, if a social media platform implements algorithms that prioritize engagement at the expense of user privacy, would it be acceptable for all platforms to adopt similar practices? Kant's Formula of Universal Law prompts us to assess the moral implications of technological decisions on a broader scale.

•

Respect for Human Dignity: Technologies must support individual dignity and the good of society. For example, artificial intelligence in healthcare should keep patient information private and allow patients to make their own health decisions. By following Kant’s idea that every person has great value, developers can help build a better society where technology respects everyone’s worth and contributes positively to our lives.

•

Roles and Responsibilities: Just as individuals have specific ethical duties based on their societal roles, technologists and developers have responsibilities to mitigate potential harm caused by their creations. For instance, cybersecurity professionals are responsible for protecting digital infrastructures from malicious attacks, reflecting a role-based duty like Arjuna's duty as a warrior in the Bhagavad Gita.

•

Ethical Design Practices: Applying Kantian ethics encourages adopting ethical design practices prioritizing transparency, accountability, and fairness. By integrating Kant's deontological principles into technological innovation, developers can create systems that function effectively and align with moral imperatives that respect human rights and promote societal well-being.

•

moral imperative: a strong ethical command or rule that guides actions; these can be either conditional or absolute in Kant's philosophy

eudaimonia: (from the Greek eu (good, well) and daimon (spirit)) Eudaimonia is human flourishing. For Aristotle, it involves living well through the consistent exercise of intellectual and moral excellence.

virtue: a stable trait of excellent character; a habitual inclination to act and think well.

For Aristotle, virtue is the balance between two vices, determined by rational principles and practical wisdom.

This approach helps individuals make thoughtful and ethically sound decisions that consider diverse perspectives and complexities in ethical reasoning.

In Table 2.1 below, explore diverse ethical frameworks and their cultural influences in this table, which outlines perspectives on consequences, actions (duties), character (virtues), and relations. Discover how these frameworks are shaped by global philosophical traditions and their applications in ethical decision-making.

It involves closely examining our current ideas and developing new ones to understand the world better.

Technological disruptions are often accepted through certain processes that consider their ethical implications: •

Incremental Adoption: Early users demonstrate the usefulness of new technologies, leading to their gradual acceptance. However, this raises ethical concerns about whether these early adopters consider the potential risks and impacts on society.

o

Integration into Infrastructure: When new technologies become part of existing systems, ethical questions arise about fair access, societal inequalities, and environmental impacts.

o

Education and Training: Teaching users about new technologies involves ethical issues like data privacy, security, and long-term effects.

o

Social Proof and Peer Influence: The influence of others can speed up the acceptance of new technologies, but it also brings ethical concerns about biased endorsements and the responsibilities of influencers.

Addressing these mechanisms ethically ensures that new technologies are fair, accountable, transparent, and good for society. Ethical guidelines help us evaluate these changes carefully, promoting responsible and sustainable innovation in our world. Figure 2.1 summarizes the ethical implications that occur with technology disruptions.

Social robots bring big changes that challenge how we think about humans and machines. A social robot is a type of robot designed to interact with people in a human-like way, communicating and behaving like humans. These robots make us question if they think like humans and raise ethical concerns about our interactions with them.

As social robots become more common in everyday life, taking on roles like companions, caregivers, and educators, they blur the lines between human and machine tasks. For example, social robots like Pepper, a robot that can engage in conversation and provide companionship, and Paro, a robotic seal used for therapy in hospitals and nursing homes, are becoming more prevalent. This shift forces us to reconsider the ethics of human-robot relationships and their impact on society.

Technology often advances faster than society can adapt, leading to issues with privacy, emotional bonds with robots, and ethical problems in robot decision- making. To address these challenges, we need strong ethical guidelines to ensure that robots benefit society and promote well-being.

By including ethics in robot design and regulations, we can reduce risks, increase transparency, and build public trust. This not only solves current issues but also sets a standard for responsible innovation in the future.

By preparing for these challenges from the beginning, they can reduce risks and follow ethical guidelines.

Keeping Track of Rules and Standards: Innovators should carefully look at how things work now and how they will work after they introduce their new ideas. They need to check what rules and standards are already in place and decide how these will change or be replaced. This careful planning includes thinking about how people might misuse the new technology and making sure ethical concerns are addressed during design and implementation.

Defining Who's Responsible: In industries that change quickly, it can be hard to figure out who is responsible if something goes wrong or if ethical issues arise. Companies need to clearly state and take on responsibility for the new products or services they offer. Whether it is making sure ride-share drivers are trustworthy or ensuring personal genetic data is used ethically, clear accountability is key to keeping consumer trust and following regulations.
