Maintaining a healthy diet based mainly on plant foods, such as, wholegrains, fruits, vegetables, pulses, nuts and seeds, can help lower the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Reducing your cancer risk may require just a few, simple changes to your diet. This burger recipe below might come in useful as it is an interesting and tasty way how you can include cancer-fighting foods in your meals.

Namely, the beans, brown rice, flax seeds and turmeric in the burger provide anti-cancer properties. Plus you can serve the burger with some kale or spinach, sliced avocado or tomatoes.. and that’s rich in powerful stuff, and above all, taste.

Makes 4 burgers

Prep: 20 mins / Cooking: 1:15hrs

Ingredients:

Claire Borg prepares a peach of a treat bursting with fruity flavours!

Life is not always peaches and cream. We all have our struggles in our every day life. But to make it a little bit sweeter for you, we have come up with a Peach Melba Cake. A cake featuring a beautifully delicious peach centre, that can be enjoyed with tea or as a dessert, and which of course includes... a lot of peaches and a lot of cream!

Peach Melba Cake

Serves 8

Ingredients:

The Heart of Hospice Malta It’s never easy to think about your last days, or those of your loved ones. We all hope for peace, tranquility and to be pain-free but, unfortunately, that isn’t always the case for those in the final stages of a debilitating illness like cancer or motor neuron disease.

Across the world, hospices provide support and care to those facing this difficult time in their life. Going into a hospice is not about giving up hope, but about acknowledging that there is no cure. It’s about striving to live life in the best possible way, surrounded by people who can provide the best possible care for your condition, whether that’s cancer, motor neuron disease, or cardiac, respiratory and renal diseases. Finally, it is a place to find support, kindness, understanding, comfort and, importantly, quality of life.

Locally, it is Hospice Malta that provides this unique level of care.

“When someone is reaching the end of their life, it can be a very complex time for them and their family,” says Anabel Spiteri, Hospice Malta’s Fundraising Executive Coordinator. “That complexity cannot be addressed by one professional alone, which is why palliative care is characterised by a multi-disciplinary approach and utilises the services or medical doctors, nurses, chaplain, physiotherapist, complementary therapist, social workers, occupational therapist and volunteers.”

Ms Spiteri goes on to explain that Hospice Malta is a voluntary organisation, inspired by Christian values.

Every year it supports over 1,000 patients and their families. “We welcome everyone and value them as unique individuals, whatever their race, religion or lifestyle,” she says. “Our services all come free of charge, and the families of our patients also benefit from bereavement support when it is needed.”

To support their invaluable work, Hospice Malta regularly organises fundraising events – from BBQs and dinners, to festivals, fun walks, midnight walks and concerts. “These events are so important to us, our patients and their families because they help us to keep our services going. It is this that enables us to help the people that need it.

“When it comes to the work that we do we all feel privileged to be so closely involved with families at such a crucial time in their lives, and we are grateful to the public for supporting us,” Ms Spiteri adds.
