Background – the Problem • Suppose you want/need to improve performance across your enterprise – – –

There are many improvement models, standards, approaches Each might help with part of the business Using several separately can be expensive, confusing, ineffective

• How can an enterprise reap benefits of knowledge in a bewildering variety of standards, models and approaches? • How can this be done efficiently and effectively?

Our Solution Integration and Harmonization: We propose that various models, standards, approaches be integrated and harmonized into a single enterprise model ‌called

Enterprise SPICE This presentation: Describes this proposed solution as being implemented by the Enterprise SPICE project. SPICE Up Your Enterprise Now! – Ibrahim-Menezes

Process Standards, Enterprises, and SPICE – Have a broad range of business objectives, perform many functions and disciplines – Likely need to address compliance with multiple standards/ model – Confusion and expense from multiple isolated standards/models

The Enterprise

– 100s of models and frameworks to address particular disciplines or business needs – Model content overlap, different structures and terminology

What is SPICE? ISO/IEC 15504 – Information Technology – Process Assessment (SPICE) is the international standard setting requirements for: – assessment methods, and for – models used for assessing process capability

SPICE originally stood for Software Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination – Originally ISO/IEC 15504 was a software-specific standard – The “S” now stands for “Software, System, and Service” – Scope has been broadened to address any disciplines

What is Enterprise SPICE? Enterprise SPICE is about: • bringing together standards and the SPICE assessment framework to serve the enterprise Enterprise SPICE objectives: • Integrate and harmonize existing standards as determined by project stakeholders to provide a single process model to address broad enterprise processes. • Provide an efficient effective mechanism for assessing and improving processes deployed across a typical, large or small, enterprise.

Benefits to Stakeholders • Single Unified Model: no need to use many separate standards/models

• Pick and Choose: select areas relevant to the business • Authoritative and Robust: from widely recognized standards and sources, with mapping to sources

• Comprehensive: broad, expanding, range of disciplines • Synergized: each source contributes important perspectives • Reduced Costs: for training, improvement, assessment, simultaneous ratings/certification vs. one model

• Enhanced Effectiveness: via integrated guidance across the enterprise

• Certification: certification services from accredited bodies SPICE Up Your Enterprise Now! – Ibrahim-Menezes

Summary of Content Enterprise SPICE provides the process dimension of the Process Assessment Model Categories: 29 processes in 4 categories: • Governance/Management – processes that set direction and oversee execution of other processes. • Life Cycle – processes that cover typical life cycle of a product or service. • Support – processes that contribute to success and quality of all processes. • Special Applications – provide ways Enterprise SPICE processes might be implemented for a particular application. Process Descriptions Each Enterprise SPICE process is described by: • Purpose – functional objectives of the process • Outcomes – expected positive results • Base Practices – activities to be performed to achieve outcomes • Relationship Notes* - between and among processes • Work Products – input and output • Mapping* - to the materials used to derive the process description * Note that Relationship Notes and source mapping are additional new constructs in SPICE models

Using Enterprise SPICE • Relation to other standards/models • Usage Contexts • Supporting Assessment and Process Improvement

“Essentially all models are wrong, but some are useful” George Box SPICE Up Your Enterprise Now! – Ibrahim-Menezes

SEPG NA 2011

21

Relation to other standards and models - 1 • Enterprise SPICE is a single integrated model: – brings together essential information from source standards and models, robustly harmonized – customer can use a single model to efficiently and effectively guide essential enterprise activities • Relation to sources: – captures sources at appropriate level of detail, no significant source content lost – users can find more detail if needed or desired by consulting sources indicated in mapping tables SPICE Up Your Enterprise Now! – Ibrahim-Menezes

SEPG NA 2011

22

Relation to other standards and models - 2 • Mix and match: processes from other models can be additionally used for areas not yet included in Enterprise SPICE, or for areas where additional detail is needed • The capability dimension: Enterprise SPICE provides the process dimension of the PAM for determining up to capability level 1. Any SPICE conformant capability dimension for levels 25 can be used with Enterprise SPICE

SPICE Up Your Enterprise Now! – Ibrahim-Menezes

SEPG NA 2011

23

Usage Contexts • General applicability: for any enterprise that seeks to improve in an integrated way Large or small, public or private, … • Products and services: for acquiring, developing, operating any type of product or service; not sector specific • Level of application: for strategic, tactical, or operational issues; for team, project, large or small organizational unit, or overall enterprise • Selective Use: selected processes may be used as applicable to the business needs of the enterprise SPICE Up Your Enterprise Now! – Ibrahim-Menezes

SEPG NA 2011

24

Supporting Assessment and Process Improvement • Internal process improvement: internal assessments to understand process capability for improvement purposes • Independent capability determination: external assessments/evaluations of process capability for partner or supplier qualification or general benchmarking • Process definition: using process information as guidance for defining processes

SPICE Up Your Enterprise Now! – Ibrahim-Menezes

SEPG NA 2011

25

Assessment • Assessments compare processes of assessed entity to Enterprise SPICE • Assessment Method: – no particular assessment method is required for use with Enterprise SPICE – the chosen method should be conformant with SPICE requirements

26

Process Improvement - 1 Some Enterprise SPICE processes that support process improvement • Enterprise Governance: for establishing high level goals and objectives, including those pertaining to improvement

• Project Management: for managing the process improvement effort

• Quality Assurance and Management: for checking compliance and identifying improvement opportunities

• Measurement and Analysis: for analyzing measures relative to goals

• Process Definition: for establishing and communicating process assets

• Process Improvement: for typical process improvement steps and activities

SPICE Up Your Enterprise Now! – Ibrahim-Menezes

SEPG NA 2011

27

Process Improvement - 2 • Enterprise SPICE does not define the process: the enterprise does • Making it yours – Add Role and Structure: role assignment, organizational structure and specific work products need to be added to Enterprise SPICE guidance – Terminology: terminology needs to reflect the terms and usage in your enterprise
