ALEXIA PUCKETT
At Smart City Networks, one of our core business principles has always been “It’s the People,” and we strive to highlight our wonderful team whenever possible. The Smart City Spotlight is dedicated to boosting our team members for their extraordinary work and dedication to serving our customers. Alexia Puckett is the Interim General Manager at the Greater Columbus Convention Center (GCCC), and it has been a joy to watch her thrive in her new position. This is only a small excerpt, but we encourage everyone to check out her full interview on our blog to learn more about her journey so far with Smart City. Alexia, this is your spotlight!
HI ALEXIA! CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU ENDED UP AT SMART CITY NETWORKS?
A: I don’t have a background in the events industry. I grew up in Columbus and started my work at a local pizza shop. After searching for a new opportunity, I landed at Smart City and have been here ever since.
YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A NEW POSITION AND NEW RESPONSIBILITIES. HOW HAS THAT BEEN?
A: With the knowledge of Bill Duke transferring to Tampa, he was able to prepare me for most of the responsibilities I would take on in his absence. It was a tremendous help knowing what was expected from me if I were to be promoted. With the support of the Smart City team, I am adapting well and look forward to learning and bettering myself every day in this position.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
A: Getting to work with all the different events. It’s amazing to see them come to life after years of planning. Most planners are not familiar with internet terms and services, so being able to offer my knowledge and relieving that stress for them is rewarding.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR CONVENTION CENTER?
A: The art, almost every wall has a unique piece of art. The GCCC Art collection is a part of the largest contemporary collection of Central Ohio art.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TEAM CULTURE IN COLUMBUS?
A: The team culture in Columbus is different from most centers, with only a GM and technician. Mark, our technician is always willing to take on a new role and help with anything he can. We are a small team but with communication and dedication we work well.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO NEW HIRES AT SMART CITY NETWORKS?
A: Be open to learning new things even if it is not a part of your job description. There is always room for growth, and you may have opportunities that you never imagined for yourself.
CAN YOU SHARE A FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF?
A: Everyone’s definition of fun is different. I really enjoy being around my family, going to concerts, camping, and trying new restaurants!
