Andalusian HORSES

The Andalusian, also known as the Pure Spanish Horse or PRE (Pura Raza Espa単ola), is a horse breed from the Iberian Peninsula, where its ancestors have lived for thousands of years. The Andalusian has been recognized as an individual breed since the 15th century, and its conformation has changed very little over the centuries.

Things to do...Places to see...

Island Of Tabarca off the coast of Alicante.

Tabarca is the largest natural island located in the Autonomous Community of Valencia, just off the Cabo de Santa Pola (marina & yacht club). It is administratively dependent on the city of Alicante and is popular with tourists who wish to explore this intriguing island.

The island of Tabarca, sometimes called ‘Flat Island’, is located around eleven miles off the coast of Alicante and maritime lines are available from the mainland, which take up to an hour to reach the island. Many tourists find this place very interesting, with its historical background of pirates who used to take refuge on the island in order to attack the Costa Blanca.

The island was secured by walls, which aimed at protecting the town centre.

The tower of St Joseph, Church of Saint Peter and Paul and the Governors House, which is now a hotel, are some of the island’s unique monuments. In 1964, the town of Tabarca was declared as a national monument for historic and artistic interest.

The coast surrounding the island is a protected marine reserve, which prohibits certain types of water activities, particularly those sports where motors are used. In addition, scuba diving and fishing is prohibited, although sports fishing is allowed with right permit.

As expected, the island is also well known for its fantastic seafood selection prepared from fresh fish like octopus, sardines or red mullet.

Alicante.

Alicante is famous for its wonderful palm tree flanked boulevard and shopping streets. The original name of the city “Lucentum” translates as “City of Light”. This attractive town along the Costa Blanca has stunning beaches, huge plazas, wonderful parks and lots of adventure as well as great weather. The city provides fun, entertainment and a great nightlife for tourists and locals alike, who can hang around until the late hours.

You can’t fail to notice this impressive castle situated on an outcrop over looking Alicante City. It’s one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe and covers the complete summit of the Benacantil Mountain.

The Goodwood Revival...

is a three day festival held each September at Goodwood Circuit since 1998 for the types of road racing cars and motorcycle that would have competed during the circuit’s original period—1948–1966.

Most people dress in period clothes. It is one of the world’s most popular motor race meetings and the only UK event which recreates the golden era of motor sport from the 1950s and 1960s.

There was some opposition to the re-introduction of racing at the circuit, but a numerically strong lobby in the form of the Goodwood Supporters Association helped to lead eventually to approval.

The festival acts as a showcase for exceptional wheel-towheel racing around a classic circuit, untouched by the modern world and relives the glory days of Goodwood Motor Racing Circuit, which ranked alongside Silverstone as Britain’s leading racing venue throughout its active years.

Between 1948 and 1966 Goodwood hosted contemporary racing of all kinds, including Formula One, the famous Goodwood Nine Hours race and the celebrated Tourist Trophy sports car race.

The festival includes Grand Prix cars from the Fifties and Sixties, sports and GT cars, as well as historic saloon cars and little-seen Formula Juniors. Many of these important historic racing cars are driven by famous names from motor sport past and present. Drinks around the world Back in the day a drink in the pub would usually mean a choice of beers, soft drink or a limited choice of spirits. These days with influences from around the world an array of cocktails, liqueurs, shots, ales and beers are offered in pubs and bars almost everywhere.

Ever wondered where you favourite tipple originates? Let us take you on a whistlestop tour of various countries and their national drinks.

Everyone knows Spain’s national drink is Sangria, a heady punch of red wine, fruit sugar and brandy. The name comes from the Spanish word for blood ‘sangre’ due to its rich red colour. Served in a big jug and shared on a hot summer afternoon, perfect for refreshing the palate.

Similar to a Mojito but definitely not the same is Brazil’s Caipirinha. Made with sugar cane, rum, sugar and lime, this tangy cocktail is guaranteed to get the party started.

The less-known national drink of Canada is the Caesar cocktail. Similar to the Bloody Mary the drink is made from the odd mix of vodka, tomato juice and clam juice. Served in a tall glass with a stick of celery it is surprisingly delicious with a dash of Worcester sauce and Tabasco.

Horse milk is probably not what springs to mind when you think of a refreshing drink but any Mongolian host would be most offended if you turned down a lukewarm glass of fermented Kumis.

Almost equally odd is Iceland’s favourite tipple Brennivin, made from fermented mashed potatoes and known locally as ‘black death’.

Glorious food food

Luscious lemon tart This tart is a lovely light dessert. You can serve the tart with ice cream, diced fresh fruit (mango is my favourite), raspberry coulis or even better with Mercadonas orange sorbet!! I think this tart always looks nice garnished with some mint leaves and some twists of lemon.

You can make this tart one day in advance if required as it keeps well if chilled.

Ingredients:

• Pre-cooked pastry case or shop bought pastry, baked blind.

• 3 Large whole eggs.

• 3 Large egg yolks.

• 3 Lemons, zest & juice.

• 200g Caster Sugar.

• 40g Butter.

• 1 Tablespoon cornflour.

• Icing sugar for dusting of tart.

Method: • Put the (3)whole eggs, (3) yolks, the lemon zest & juice , caster sugar and cornflour into a medium to large saucepan.

• Heat over gentle medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens (it will need to bubble for a bit), until you reach the consistency of lemon curd.

• Take off the heat, stir in the butter until melted and combined.

• Spoon into tart case.

• Leave to chill in fridge until set, at least four hours!!.

• Once set, dust the tart with icing sugar and serve.

Birthdays, wedding, fiestas or just the fact that it’s the weekend is any excuse to play music, sing or dance and it is a pastime of all ages.

THE RIGHT CLUBS Introduction This article and the articles that are to follow in later issues are all about golf clubs, how they work and why they work the way that they do. I will explain how it is possible for you to choose a set of golf clubs that are right for you. Clubs that will allow you to maximize your strengths and minimize any weaknesses that you may have in your swing. How it is possible, for a minimal financial outlay of a few Euros, have your present clubs customized so that you will be able to play the game of golf to your full potential and above all enjoy the game.
