onsidering we are barely in double digits as we go to print this month, it’s disheartening to understand that more

than 600 drug and drink driving offences were detected in Qld to January 8. Driving under the influence, as well as “drug driving”, speeding, distraction, and misuse of restraints are being targeted statewide. “Operation Charger” was launched on December 9 “to

minimise law-breaking and detect those who choose to do the wrong thing on Queensland roads”. The large-scale operation involves both high visibility and covert patrols, random breath testing and speed camera sites. Police launched “Operation Continued on page 6... Photo supplied by the QPS.

SUMMER FIRES A WARNING SHOT Bushfire warning revoked... for now Contributed

A

bushfire declaration has been revoked as we go to press, after an exclusion zone between the Gore Highway, Millmerran Woods Road and Wondul Range National Park was

established earlier in the week, as fires took hold in a lifestyle block area north west of Warwick. In a sign that the times are starting to get a little more typically drier, at least for now, residents were evacuated in an areas around Millmerran Woods, Cypress Gardens and the Pines—all,

as their names suggest, wooded areas with plenty of flammable material. At its peak, around 30 firefighters were battling the blaze into Monday evening. Three water bomber aircraft assisted ground-based fire fighters at the fire’s peak, which swallowed up hundreds of hectares of what Rural Fire

Service Superintendent Wayne Waltisbuhl described as heavily vegetated areas. It’s a timely warning however that complacency about fires during the big wet should begin to evaporate rapidly and be replaced by wariness.
