14th Annual MPACE Conference in Anaheim

President’s Letter Tom Munnerlyn Dear MPACE Colleagues, Welcome to the 2018 Disneyland MPACE Conference. We are hosting the 14th annual MPACE conference at the Disneyland Hotel, and the conference committee is planning a real Disney immersion for us. This year’s conference theme, “Making Dreams Reality,” fits right in with Walt Disney and his many dreams for Disneyland. At the MPACE conference, you can make your dreams a reality by finding your passions and purpose. One of my favorite Walt Disney quotes is, “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” As we know, Disneyland is the “Happiest Place on Earth.” This is a great time of year to be at Disneyland with all the holiday lights. When Walt Disney opened Disneyland 63 years ago, Disney’s dedication was, “To all who come to this happy place: Welcome. Disneyland is your land, with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.” The Disneyland conference committee has been planning many joyful and inspirational events including two keynote speakers, Jeff Barnes, and Dr. Knatokie Ford. Jeff Barnes will discuss his book, “The Wisdom of Walt: Leadership Lessons from the Happiest Place on Earth,” and Dr. Knatokie Ford will focus on leveraging the power of storytelling to promote social change, particularly in STEM Fields. We will also have the opportunity to go into the park during the conference. The hallmarks of the MPACE conference are networking, conference content, and making a lifetime of connections. My hope is for you to be engaged in the conference. This is my 20th year as a member of MPACE, including a few years in WACE. MPACE has given me the opportunity to develop my leadership skills, and engage within the organization in various types of positions. As you know, MPACE is an all-volunteer association. For many of you, this may be your first MPACE conference. Please explore many of the volunteer opportunities and connect with MPACE members who are volunteering or who have volunteered. As an all-volunteer association, you help shape the future of MPACE. As you make your journey to the conference, I wish you safe travels. I look forward to seeing you at the Disneyland conference for a truly rewarding and magical experience.

Tom Munnerlyn

MPACE Anaheim Conference Co-Chairs Adrienne Antonio & Eric Bloomquist Dear MPACE Colleagues: Welcome to Anaheim and the 2018 MPACE Conference, Making Dreams Reality! We’re so excited to present this year’s conference, and are thrilled to share this experience with you. The conference committees have worked hard throughout the year to create a memorable and impactful experience, and we hope you’ll take full advantage of the opportunities this week. From the insights & inspiration of our keynote speakers, tangible take-away ideas from breakout sessions, pre-conference Leadership Exchange & Site Visit programs, business solutions in the exhibit hall, early morning health & wellness activities, to a night out in Disneyland, this conference has something for everyone to enjoy. This year’s conference would not be possible without the work of our amazing conference planning committees, and the guidance & enthusiasm of our association management group, Smith Moore & Associates – thank you sincerely for committing your time and energy to make this conference a success. And of course, this conference has also been made possible by the generous contributions of our sponsors and business partners in the exhibit hall. We are grateful for your partnership and your continued support of MPACE. Join us this week in making the most of this conference experience. Learn and grow in your professional knowledge and skills; reconnect with old friends and meet new colleagues; immerse yourself in the magic of Disney so you can be inspired to make your dreams a reality.

Networking Break Fireside Chats Why not spend your networking breaks by networking with colleagues at a Fireside Chat? Check out the Fireside Chat topics below and just show up with an open mind to brainstorm and share best practices on some trending topics in our profession!

Wednesday, December 12th | 3:15 PM – 4:00 PM Career Development Programming: Webinars vs Workshops (or both?)

Audience: Colleges Webinars can be a great way to scale our programs and provide easily accessible contents for the students. At the same time, we want to be mindful about how students learn differently and also provide ways for them to interact and engage with one another. Let’s chat about different ways that we can offer webinars, on its own, and in conjunction with high impact programs. By being creative in the delivery and design of our programs, we can increase our reach to students who may have a variety of different needs and wants, and provide different ways for students to learn, practice, and develop new skill sets. – Facilitated by Alice Kim Making Dreams a Reality. Conquering the Great Divide between Academic and Student Affairs through Engagement, Assessment, and High Impact Practices Audience: Colleges

Student success initiatives work best when academic and student affairs work collaboratively. Learn ways the Fresno State Career Center developed a collaborative model that engaged them with academic affairs by initiating new ways to engage on campus. Some of the new initiatives included starting a campus wide career council, sharing customized assessment data by college, engaging with faculty, working with academic advising centers and participating in academic internships as a high impact practice. – Facilitated by Debbie Young How to get a scholarship from MPACE? Audience: Employers and Colleges

MPACE offers an array of scholarships. Attend this Fireside Chat to learn how to shine in the application process. We’ll be sharing information how we score scholarship applications and essential dos and don’ts. – Facilitated by Emily White and Craig Oka

Networking Break Fireside Chats Thursday, December 13th | 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM Delivering Career Development to a Diverse Student Population: Programming that Supports Every Student’s College to Career Transition

Audience: Employers and Colleges; Specific content for small colleges Does your career center struggle to maintain consistent student engagement? Do you experience low student turnout at some of your employer events? Hawaii Pacific University’s Career Development Center assessed the effectiveness of its career programming and discovered an opportunity to be more resourceful in how it supports students through their college-to-career transition. This presentation is designed to benefit both employers and small, centralized career centers serving a wonderfully diverse student population. – Facilitated by Kelly Primacio, Ryan Tin Loy, and Mike Van Lear Cohort Internship Success: Give Your Students the Experience and Skills to Realize their Dreams Audience: Employers and Colleges

This fireside chat will examine how cohort internship programs can provide students with industry relevant skills and experience. Through collaboration with industry professionals and organizations, career centers can design intentional, well-thought out internship programs, helping students gain valuable experience in their chosen fields. Three Gonzaga University cohort internship programs will be used as case studies, illustrating different approaches and formats. – Facilitated by Michael Gerety and Vicki Hucke A Dream Deferred: Problematizing Professionalism

Audience: Employers and Colleges Many employers recruiting on college campuses understand the value of diversifying their workforce yet oftentimes do not understand that their recruiting practices and workplace cultures could be driving away the talent they seek. This generation of students brings a deep knowledge of their complex, intersecting identities that sometimes conflict with the traditional concept of “professionalism”. How can recruiters be more cognizant of the ways in which they engage with diverse student populations? How can career centers better educate themselves in order to advocate for their students? – Facilitated by Katie Flint and Barbara Richardson
