Yesterday, we went to the Kennedy Space Center. It’s brilliant! They have a garden with eight real rockets that went into space. You can touch them. It’s amazing touching something that has been into space – been to the moon! Then we went to Disney World. The whole Disney Resort, the theme park and hotels, is about the size of San Francisco! It has great rides, roller coasters, water rides and haunted houses. Best ride – Space Mountain – a roller coaster in the dark – I was terrified! I spent about 700 dollars but I bought lots of cool presents. Tomorrow we are going to Gatorland to check out the alligators. Lots of Love, Tara

Money Makes the World Go Round Funny stuff, money. Coins and bills. We carry it in our pockets and our wallets, but how often do we think about what it really is? Why does the world run on bits of paper and metal that we all agree is worth a certain thing? The idea of money is very old. Historians think that it was the Babylonians that first came up with the idea about four thousand years ago. They needed a system that would make trading and buying and selling easier. Before that people used barter to trade – they directly swapped one thing for another after negotiating. Imagine if we still all had to carry things around with us to swap every time we wanted a cup of coffee! We would need much bigger pockets! Metal was used because it is easy to divide and carry around. The first stamped coin found so far is from ancient Greece – about 700bc. The method became popular very quickly as leaders all over the world put their power and their faces onto coins. The oldest currency still going today is the British Pound or Sterling as it is sometimes called. It was introduced by King Offa in the 8th century. When the British Empire was very powerful the Pound was used as the world currency. One of the newest currencies is the Euro, introduced at the start of 1999. About 350 million people use it day to day but this number is getting bigger all the time. One thing to remember about money is that it is only a symbol. It is just a bit of paper or metal that everyone believes they can exchange for services or goods.

Sandra could hear her mother’s voice in her head as she looked at the coin on the pavement. She bent down to pick it up – she needed all the luck she could get today. Sandra had been practising her dance routine for weeks, running, jumping and dancing all over the garden and all over the house. She put on her music and forced her body to bend and twist. Her body ached each night as she went to sleep. She dreamt about each dance move – she dreamt about winning the competition. Now the day was here – she was going to win her place in the National Finals in London. After that, the world championships in America, a job with a professional dance group, travelling all over the world. Dance would make her famous and make her rich.

She got on her knees and started pushing at the coin, trying to force it loose.

Money It wasn’t so simple. The comb bent as she pulled and pulled. The coin stayed where it was, it didn’t move. Sandra was about to give up, leave the coin and run to the bus stop when the coin moved. Just a bit, a little, but it definitely moved. Sandra cried out in triumph and doubled her effort.
