‘If plumbing was easy, we’d be out of a job,’ said Dennis and rose from his desk. Dennis Jackson is my boss here at Teabury Plumbing Services and that is his opening line every Monday morning. He tossed me the job order sheets. I looked through the papers. I winced when I saw the third order. ‘Is that Norman Potter?’ ‘Yeah, sure.’ But I already knew from the address. I moaned. ‘So you’ve heard of him? He’s notorious around here. He tries to build and repair things by himself, and when he’s made a mess of it he calls in the craftsmen.’ I didn’t know that. That was not the reason I was whining. 87 Fenn Street. Seven years ago. I took a deep breath and then rang the bell. Mr. Potter had gone completely bald since I last saw him, but I recognised his squinting eyes and his grumpy voice at once. ‘Where’s Dennis?’ ‘Mr. Jackson is in Willesden. Big job at the hospital.’ ‘I’ve never seen a woman plumber before. Aren’t you very young?’ I could not deny either so I said, ‘I’m twenty-three and this is my second year with the plumbing service.’ ‘Are you fully qualified?’ ‘Yes, I’m a licensed plumber.’ If he had recognised me, there would have been tougher questions for me to answer. He reluctantly let me in. I hoped that Justin wasn’t there. But he had probably moved out years ago, anyway. We went into the kitchen. I was relieved that we didn’t head for the living room, because that was where I had really messed up back then. ‘It’s this radiator. It’s cold although I’ve turned the thermostat up. I think there’s something wrong with the boiler.’

Mr. Potter was not happy when we had to switch off the boiler and empty the radiator. He rang the school to say that he would have to stay home for at least another half hour. When I had moved the bleed valve to its correct place, I looked at my watch. 1:14 p.m. I began to relax. I would soon be out of here. Then, all of a sudden, Mr. Potter cried out, ‘Ah!’ I turned to look at him. ‘I remember you now! Alice!’ ‘It’s Alison,’ I corrected him. Unfortunately I remembered too.

We went down to the basement to the boiler room. I checked the gauges and the circulation pumps. Everything seemed to be in order. ‘What about the other radiators?’ ‘Oh, they work all right. It’s the one in the kitchen that’s cold.’ We returned to the kitchen. I unscrewed the thermostat. ‘Someone has put this spring the wrong way,’ I said and turned the spring around, screwed the thermostat back on and laid my hand on the radiator. ‘You can feel the heat coming now,’ I said. ‘Oh, good. That’s it then, isn’t it?’ ‘No, I’m sorry Mr Potter, it’s not. Why is the bleed valve at the bottom of the radiator?’ He cleared his throat. ‘My brother-in-law and I moved the radiator ourselves when we renovated the kitchen.’ He seemed to be lost in thought for a while. ‘He’s a car mechanic,’ he added. And you are the school caretaker at Teabury Comprehensive, I thought. Where I met your son, Justin. ‘It must’ve been turned upside down to fit the new pipes.’ I studied the tubings. They looked okay, no leaks. ‘We moved the sink as well.’ I noticed that the sink had a couple of dents and scratches near the tap. I bent down and looked under the sink drain and removed the duct tape from the water seal. ‘I’ll replace the faulty gasket when we’re finished with the radiator.’

We were in the living room drinking Coke. Justin was on the couch and I was looking around. On the bookshelf there were hundreds of old 78 records. ‘Can we play one or two of them?’ ‘No, Dad won’t allow that.’ ‘But can I just look at them?’ Before Justin had the chance to tell me not to, I grabbed some records and sat down on the couch beside him. Royal Garden Blues, Duke Ellington. Serenade in Blue, Glenn Miller. Rockin’ Chair, Fats Waller. Songs and artists I’d never heard about. I drank some more Coke – and choked on it. I squirted Coke all over the records. ‘Oh, shit!’ Coke is quite sticky. It would not come off with a dry cloth. I rinsed the records under the tap in the kitchen. I dried them again. But I couldn’t get all the water out of the grooves. I put the records to dry in the sun on the windowsill. Justin – what a cry-baby – was devastated. When I left, Justin promised to put the records back before his father came home from work. ‘You ruined my records!’ Not all of them, I thought. ‘You shouldn’t leave records like that in the sun! They got warped! Never use water on old records! It ruined the labels!’ He had told me this once before, seven years ago. He had been furious then. He seemed to be working himself into a rage once again. ‘You shouldn’t mess with things you don’t understand!’ I looked at the radiator. We both looked at it. We stood in silence for a while. Then he gave me an embarrassed grin. It was the first time ever that I had seen Mr. Potter smile. We shook hands. have always dreamed of working in the movies,” says Millie Fawcett, “but as a child I wanted to be in front of the camera, not behind it. Who knows the name of a make-up artist? Still, each morning I happily drive off to work.” 5

Even though Millie is extremely tired in the morning she has to be at the location around dawn each day. It’s her responsibility to lay out supplies and special prostheses for her actor. Millie works after a schedule of make-up, hair and wardrobe calls. What scenes are to be shot tomorrow? Millie checks what her actor is supposed to do, what the actor looks like right now and what can be prepared in advance. To help her achieve the right look she has detailed notes, sketches and photos. Most of the time all her hard work pays off but sometimes nothing turns out the way she has planned.

At what age did you think about becoming a veterinary nurse? I was around 15 years old, but I had always been interested in many kinds of animals. My earliest memories are of cats and dogs in the family. I actually considered going into human nursing before realising that I preferred to work with animals. Did you ever think about becoming a vet instead? No. As a teenager it seemed to me like too many years of hard work in order to get into the profession. Has your role as a veterinary nurse turned out as you expected? In the past, I was very much behind the scenes. Now I meet the clients and their animals, which I like doing. The longer I am a veterinary nurse, the more I enjoy it, because I am given greater responsibilities

What makes you useful to the practice? I get everything organised. To save the vet’s time it’s vital to be totally prepared, for instance, when surgical operations take place. I make sure that drugs are ordered, delivered and stored safely, so that we don’t have to search for them. We all work together as a team. What is your most demanding task? It has to be when a pet must be put to sleep. It’s good for everyone if I join the vet on such house calls. I often know the families well, and they are comforted by seeing my familiar face. At such a stressful time it’s comforting for the animal to be in its home surroundings, and better for the owners too. Which are the more enjoyable parts of your work? I particularly like dealing with animals that don’t behave the way their owners would like them to. About two years ago, I studied for a diploma in animal behaviour. I learnt useful theory, and since then feel more confident when explaining various training methods to pet owners. And of course, helping to cure an animal that is in pain or wounded can make anybody happy.
