Big Apple girl I’m Mary. Mary Suarez. I come from ‘the Big Apple’ – that’s New York – in the United States. I live with my family in an old house near the university. I’m twelve and a half years old and my hobbies are skateboarding and training my dog. Let me introduce you to my family! My mom is a brain scientist, which means she studies how the brain works. I’m in England now because she has a job at the university here. My dad? Well, he writes children’s books – but mainly he stays at home and looks after us. Then there’s my older brother, Diego. He’s kind of bossy. And let’s not forget my baby sister, Rose. And, of course, I have to tell you about my dog, Oscar. He’s three years old and is a Golden Retriever. He is a great dog and, at the weekends, we do agility training and take long walks together.

Come on in … if you dare! Hi! I’m Mary’s older brother, Diego. Come – I want to show you her room. Ready? It’s very messy! Look at all the clothes on the floor and the bed and the desk. Terrible! See that big thing in the corner of her room? That’s a wardrobe – and that is where she should put her clothes! She has also got a chest of drawers. This is where she can put her socks and underwear and stuff. Over in that corner Mary keeps her three skateboards. That’s right! She has got three! She’s crazy about skateboarding! And there, next to her bed, is where her dog sleeps. She’s crazy about him, too. Actually, I guess she is just crazy. Full stop. She has got a great view out of the window. Can you see? That’s our garden. It’s pretty big, with lots of room to play football in. Look over there! That’s our favorite tree. We have a tree house up there in the branches. What’s that? Do you want to go outside? OK – go on then! I’ll come soon. New kid on the block Hi, my name is Lee Banton and I’m twelve years old. I come from a place called Palmer’s Green. That’s in North London. I live with my mum, who is a computer programmer, and my step-dad, a teacher. We moved here in June this year, to a three-bedroom flat next to the sports centre. It’s a new flat, only two years old, and my room is much bigger than the bedroom I had before. I’ve got enough space for a desk, computer, all my books and a sofa. Because it’s a flat we don’t have a garden, but there are two big balconies. In my spare time I like to swim, play football with my friends, and cook. When I can, I love to read fantasy books, but if there is one thing I am crazy about, it’s computer games. I don’t have any pets, but a few years ago I had a small lizard called Peanut. Peanut’s dead now. I would like to have a snake, but Mum says they cost a lot. Maybe I can get one in January, when it’s my birthday, or buy one when I have enough money.

Time for a break! Where are you from? I mean, where in London do you come from? Lee I’m from Palmer’s Green. Karim Is that near The London Eye? Sofie Or Buckingham Palace? Lee No, no. Neither. It’s about 30 minutes from the centre of the city, if you go by train. Palmer’s Green isn’t so far from Arsenal’s and Tottenham’s football stadiums. Sofie Wow, that’s brilliant! Lee I suppose it is. Karim Do you like to watch football? Lee I saw Arsenal last year, but I don’t go often. Very seldom, actually. Sofie What do you think about London? Lee It’s great. Some department stores and shops are open all night. And it’s a beautiful city, especially for tourists: Big Ben, The Tower of London, Hyde Park, Piccadilly Circus. And there are lots of well-known museums and theatres to visit. Karim It sounds pretty good. Lee But there are too many cars. London is not very clean and there are always traffic jams. Sofie

The bell sounds for the end of break.

At last – the lunch bell! I’m starving! Me too! Come on then. Let’s go to lunch.

In the school cafeteria.

Mmm… That looks good! I want the fried chicken with a green salad and dressing. A glass of milk and some fruit salad for dessert. What about you? No thanks! I’m vegetarian – remember? I’d like the veggie pizza with peppers, onions and mushrooms. Oh yes – and I want some peas, carrots and broccoli to go with that. What else? A glass of water, perhaps? Oh – and look! My favourite – ice cream with chocolate sauce! And those brownies just smell so delicious! I’d like a small one, I think. And… Er… Mary? I think your eyes are bigger than your stomach! Can you really eat all that?

Mary looks at her tray.

I love Mondays! Mary is at home in the kitchen with her family.

So, Mary. What does your school timetable look like this year? Mary It’s OK, I guess. Mondays are great because I have double science in the morning and woodwork in the afternoon. I don’t have art this year, so that’s good. Mom Why? Mary Well, because I don’t like the teacher. And, anyway, it’s boring. Just like history. Let’s see: it says here that I have history on Tuesdays and Fridays at quarter past two. Oh no! And it’s PE on Friday mornings. Dad You’re good at sports, so what’s wrong with PE? Mom

The four seasons Do you have a favourite season of the year? Would you like it always to be warm and sunny like it is near the equator? There are only two seasons there: the dry season and the rainy season. What makes the seasons different and special for us? Let’s take a look!

Autumn or Fall The months of September, October and November change our landscape drastically. Leaves turn red, yellow, orange and brown, then fall from the trees. The shorter days come with rain, wind and fog. Temperatures fall and the sky turns grey. Farmers take in their crops at this time of year. Around the world people celebrate this harvest. The American and Canadian holiday of Thanksgiving, the Moon Festival in China, and even Halloween has its roots in the harvest celebrations.

Winter With December, January and February comes snow. The chillier weather also brings frost and ice. Snow and ice can be dangerous for traffic, but a lot of fun if you like ice skating. During this time many people celebrate Christmas and the New Year. The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah normally comes in December, too. It’s strange to think that when it’s winter north of the equator then in Australia and New Zealand it’s summer. So, Christmas Day (the 25th December) is in the summertime. I bet there aren’t too many snowmen there!

Spring When spring is here it becomes warmer. New life is all around us. Trees grow new leaves, grass becomes green again, and flowers start to bloom. If we are lucky we can see the first butterflies of the year or lambs playing in fields. March, April and May can bring sunshine, showers, stormy weather, or even more snow. It’s difficult to know which clothes to wear without looking at the weather forecast.

Summer June, July and August can only mean one thing: summer! Warm, sunny days with blue skies make us happy, and even summer showers can feel wonderful. Don’t forget to protect yourself if you spend time in the sun. Drink lots of water, wear a hat and put on a good sunscreen. You should also stay out of direct sun during the hottest part of the day (from 10am to 2pm). But it’s not all sunbathing and swimming. The summer months can sometimes bring a storm or two, with thunder, lightning and hail.
