Animal Rights D Study the crocodile facts and then answer the questions. Write in your notebook. There are between 200,000 and 300,000 saltwater crocodiles living wild in the world. Nobody really knows how long crocodiles live. Most experts say around 70 years. Saltwater crocodiles can grow up to 7 metres in length and weigh over 1,000 kilos. Crocodiles don’t chew. Their teeth are only used for grasping. Crocodiles see best in dim light. Crocodiles are cannibals. Big crocodiles will eat little crocodiles whenever they get the chance. Crocodiles usually stay underwater for about fifteen minutes. There is some evidence that they can hold their breath for two hours if necessary. Crocodiles can open their mouths underwater and not drown. This is because a flap of skin at the base of the tongue covers the airpipe. Crocodiles have scent glands near the throat. The scent helps them tell male from female. Crocodiles have eighteen toes: five each on the front feet and four each on the back feet. A female crocodile lays around fifty eggs each year. Most of the young don’t survive. Crocodiles have tear glands and are able to cry. The saying “to cry crocodile tears” means to pretend you are sad about something.

How big can saltwater crocodiles get? Why aren’t baby crocodiles safe from the big ones? What do crocodiles use their teeth for? How can crocodiles tell males from females? How many eggs does a female crocodile lay a year? What is meant by the expression “to cry crocodile tears”? How old can crocodiles get? What kind of light is best for crocodiles’ eyesight? For how long must you hold your breath underwater in order to beat the crocodile record?
