The Drama In front of the school there is a crowd of people. They are all standing around Keera asking questions. She has just starred in her first movie. She was picked from thousands of other girls to play the part of Princess Lianne in the new Space Ranger movie. Her two old school friends, Assad and Joanne, are sitting on a wall watching the crowd. Imagine people staring at you all day, every day. Talking, shouting, staring, pointing and laughing at you. What do you do? Well, a male chimpanzee called Santino did something about it. Santino lives at the Furuvik Zoo in Sweden and he is the leader of a small group of chimpanzees. What Santino did amazed scientists and shocked visitors to the zoo. In the evening Santino walked around his enclosure collecting stones. Sometimes there weren’t any stones lying around on the ground The zoo keepers saw him chip off smaller stones from the larger concrete rocks. Sometimes these stones were too big so he broke them into even smaller stones. They had to be the perfect size. He put the stones in piles close to where the visitors to the zoo usually stood when they watched the apes. At about midday Santino began throwing the stones. He threw them at the people standing around the enclosure watching the chimps. Everybody was surprised and shocked. Santino never attacked the other apes in his group. What he disliked were the humans standing watching him. Nobody was ever hurt by Santino’s rock throwing because his aim was terrible. But people were amazed at how intelligent Santino was. When the zoo keepers realised what he was doing, the keepers took the piles of stones away. But Santino kept collecting. Newspapers from all over the world wrote about him and scientists came to study him. He became really famous. Santino showed the world and scientists that great apes like chimpanzees and orang-utans are very intelligent. They can use tools, make complex plans about the future and then carry them out successfully.

This is Nicole. She’s from England and she’s crazy about basketball. My name’s Nicole, I’m 16 and I’m a basketball player. I started when I was three, bouncing a ball about in the garden with my dad. Dad said I was a natural. I watched all the games I could on TV and we’d sit up for hours afterwards talking about who played well and who was not on form. Mum’s not really into basketball, but she comes to my games to cheer me on. I play for the Manchester Stars under 19s. I’m in my last year at Red Fern High School. Next year, I’m hoping to get on a three-year national basketball scholarship. Here’s an extract from my diary: “I found out today that I’m going to be a sub for the England Under 17s. It’s pretty good, but I’m a bit disappointed that I’m not in the start team. Still, I guess I’ll get some time on the court. Over the next month we’re playing Ireland, Scotland and the USA. Just Basics 2 Stavelser En stavelse består alltid av ett vokalljud och varierande antal konsonanter. Att dela upp ord i stavelser hjälper oss läsa och stava orden.
Vi skall visa hur uttalet av vokalen ändras beroende på hur den placeras i ord och stavelser. Ordet be uttalas bi. Vokalen är lång och ljudet fortsätter att låta som vokalen i alfabetet. Ordet beg uttalas begg. Vokalens ljud stängs av med en konsonant och låter som sitt korta ljud. Pröva att läsa följande ordpar och notera hur uttalet förändras: a he hi

When I was younger my parents used to invite all my relatives, even my aunts, uncles and cousins, for a big meal followed by a chocolate cake with candles. But last year we went to a restaurant instead. All my relatives still came, but my mum and dad got to relax and have some fun instead of cooking all the time. It’s much better and there’s no washing up! This year we’re going to an Italian restaurant, because I love pasta.

It doesn’t go that fast, but it feels really old and rickety, and you keep thinking that the car will go wrong and fly off the track – it’s fantastic. My mum won’t go on any of the scary rides with me, that’s why I can take a friend!

I always just ask for a few bucks instead of gifts. That way, I get to go to the stores and buy what I want. I think this is much better than having to pretend you like something when you really don’t. I know every present I buy for myself will be perfect.
