Canada Rocks! What do you think of when you hear the word Canada? Do you think of snow, cold weather and ice hockey? Well, that is true sometimes, but there’s a lot more. My name is Erin and I come from Ontario. Do you know where that is? Most people don’t. It is in the south of Canada, near an enormous lake called Lake Ontario. I’ll spell that for you: O-N-T-A-R-I-O. More than 35 million people live in Canada, which is quite a lot of people. But it’s not nearly as many people as there are in the USA – they have about 300 million people. We have a heap of famous people here, like Justin Bieber and Jim Carrey, but people always think they are American. It makes us mad! Did you know we have two official languages in Canada? English and French. Children who live in the English parts of Canada learn French as a second language, and in the French parts, children have to learn English as a second language. In the US, most children learn Spanish as a second language. I think it’s fun to speak another language. Language is a funny word, it isn’t easy to spell: L-A-N-G-U-A-G-E. I’m proud to come from Canada, but please don’t call me American! People think it’s the same thing, but it’s not. I’m Canadian! C-A-N-A-D-I-A-N.

Earthquake! Chandler lives in an apartment on the third floor, in the middle of Los Angeles. It’s a quarter past 7 in the morning and Chandler is in his bedroom. He hears a loud noise and suddenly, everything starts to shake. Earthquake! His mom runs into his room, she is holding the baby. “Chandler! Come here, get under the table!” “Let’s go outside!” he says. “No,” says his mother, “that’s the first rule: if you are inside, stay inside!” “What’s the second rule?” he asks. “The second rule is: get under a strong table!” shouts his mom. Chandler is sitting under the table with his mom and the baby. CRASH! Pictures fall from the wall and break. A glass falls out of the cupboard and smashes on the floor. His baby brother cries, so Chandler holds his hand. Suddenly, it all stops and everything is quiet. Chandler’s hands are cold and he is shaking. “Mom, can’t we move from LA? I hate earthquakes!”

The Big One People in Los Angeles know all about earthquakes. Some people believe that a powerful and dangerous earthquake will hit LA one day. They call it “The Big One”.

A big earthquake is a scary thing: the whole city shakes. The ground moves up and down like a wave, and people fall over. Whole windows fall out and smash on the sidewalk. Large branches fall out of trees and land on the road, and then cars and trucks crash into the branches. Traffic stops. No place is safe. It is scary out on the street, and also in tall buildings. The electricity can go out, and elevators then get stuck. Sometimes bridges and tunnels collapse and traffic can’t move. There is also the danger that a fire will start if electric wires break. There was big earthquake in LA in 1994, where 60 people died. Some countries have gigantic earthquakes, but no one FOLLOW UP knows if a gigantic earthquake will one day hit 1. What does LA stand for? Patrick, do you have to do jobs in your family? Yeah, I have to hoover my room each week, and I take Spud out for a walk every other day. My big sister, Annie, helps with the laundry. And do you get pocket money? Yeah, I get 10 euros, but only if I do all my jobs. What about Annie? What does she get? She gets 12 euros, but she does more work. That’s not fair! I help with the cooking on Fridays, and empty the dishwasher twice a week. But I only get 8 euros a week. My brother does the shopping once a week, and he gets the same. I don’t do anything, and I get 10 euros! What, nothing? Not even tidy your room? What does your mum say? Mum says it’s my room, if I want to live in a mess I can. She just closes the door. So your room’s a tip? Pretty much. But, sometimes she gets really tired of the mess, and tells me to clean it. But you still get pocket money, so you can pay me to clean your room, right? How about four euros? It’s a deal! Patrick, I saw Carrie’s room yesterday… four euros is not enough. Too late!

Market Day at Auroa School New Zealand Kia Ora! My name is Peyton and I go to Auroa School which is in a small town in New Zealand. The environment is very important to us in New Zealand, and I want to tell you about a special day in our school…

Today is Recyling Market Day. I bet you’re wondering what that is, so let me tell you. Recyling Market Day is a great day of selling and buying, and it’s good for the environment. All the students are selling things they made from junk. Tessie is selling bird feeders that she’s made from old cups and saucers. Ryan is selling earring stands that he’s made from old records. First, he drilled holes in the records and then made a stand from old ice cream sticks. Now he’s showing people how to put earrings through the holes in the record. Something Useful Even the young kids are selling things - Myra and Kieran made 20 piggy banks from plastic bottles and they are selling well! Two kids in year 2 made more than 30 cute cards using old wallpaper and magazines: Birthday cards and Christmas cards. Our teachers gave us time in class to plan and make our things, and some teachers have made things from junk too. Miss Keeley, my art teacher, is selling beautiful coat hooks that she made from old spoons and forks. Mr. Dalton, our woodshop teacher, is selling flower boxes made from old crates. “I am learning to look at things in a different way,” says Kora. “I’m thinking of my punctured rugby ball… who knows what I could make from that?” We’re all going home with new things. Next time you see junk, don’t just throw it away, it might be something useful!

The Long Winter (A traditional story from Northwestern Canada) Long, long before people walked on the planet, animals were the only living things on Earth. And, there came a terribly long winter when the Earth became very, very cold. For three years, thick, grey clouds hung over the Earth so no animal saw the sun. It was dark, and snow fell all the time. The animals decided to have a meeting to see what they could do. The animals that came were: Deer, Moose, Lynx, Fox, Wolf, Wolverine and Mouse. Suddenly, Lynx said: “Bear is missing!” “All the bears are missing!” shouted Wolverine. “I have not seen Bear for three years,” said Moose. “Nor have I,” said Deer. “Perhaps Bear is hibernating?” said Wolf.

“For three years? I don’t think so!” said Fox. “Maybe she is hiding the sun?” squeaked Mouse. “We must go to the Upper World to find Bear and bring back the sun, or we will all die!” said Moose. So the animals set off at once. After travelling for many days through dark and deep forests, they found a door to the Upper World. They went through it and started climbing. Half way up a huge mountain they saw a shiny lake and beside it was a large tepee. “What is that?” asked Wolverine. “That’s a tepee and there are bear cubs playing outside in the snow!” said Moose who was the tallest of them all. Together, they walked to the tepee. “Where is your mother?” asked Lynx. “She is out hunting,” replied the cubs. “She is coming back soon.” “We cannot stay here,” said Mouse nervously. “Why are you shaking Mouse? Be brave now!” said Moose. “We are very cold, may we wait in your tepee?” asked Fox slyly. The animals all went into the tepee and looked around. Three heavy bags were hanging up in the tepee. “What is in that bag?” asked Wolverine pointing to the first bag. “That is where Mother is keeping the wind,” replied the smallest cub. “And what is your mother keeping in the middle bag?” asked Wolf. “She is storing the rain in that bag,” replied the second cub. “And what is she storing in the largest bag?” asked Moose. “We cannot tell you, that is a secret. She will be very cross if we tell you,” said the third cub. “Ah, but she will never know if you tell us, will she?” said Fox smiling at the cubs. “Well, that is where she is hiding the sun,” whispered the third cub… (To be continued in a listening exercise…)

Out with the Fairies “You’ve got to be nice to the fairies, and they will be nice to you. But if you hurt a fairy, very bad things can happen to you!” Great Grandmother O’Harran always talks about the fairies. She says she can see them when she is walking in the forests and fields outside Killarney. Today, we are taking a long walk to find the fairies. Granny O knows where to find them. “You have to believe in them or you won’t see them,” she tells me. “Adults never see them, they are too busy. Only children and old people see fairies.” We sit down under a clump of trees… we are waiting for the fairies to come. The wind is blowing gently, and the branches are moving a little. I am sitting very still, but the fairies don’t come out, they are hiding from me! Then, Granny O points her finger and says: “Look, right next to you, there’s a little old fairy man with a jacket and hat, he’s looking at you. And there’s another in a skirt, she’s carrying a stick.” I try my hardest, and feel around with my hand, but I cannot see the fairies anywhere. I wonder if Granny O is imagining things. Granny teaches me about Hawthorns trees too. “They are very special to the fairies. They live under them, so never, ever cut down a Hawthorn tree or the fairies will punish you!” “What will happen?” I ask. “When farmers cut down Hawthorns, the fairies make their cows and sheep really ill. Or they make their crops die.” I decide never to cut down a Hawthorn, I don’t want the fairies to make my dog sick. Back home, I tell my mom, “I like Granny O, she tells me all about fairies.” “Poppet, there are no fairies; Granny O is just telling you stories,” replies my mum. “She is out with the fairies she is!”
