Everyone has heard of Toronto and Vancouver – probably because of the hockey – and some people know about Montreal. But when I talk to friends online and tell them I’m from Ottawa, the first question I get is ‘where’s that?’ Well, for all you people out there that don’t know – Ottawa has been the capital since 1857 when Canada became independent from the UK. Ottawa is named after the local Native American Odawas that used the river. It’s an amazing place to live in!

It’s an old city with loads of things to do. It was known ffor shipbuilding and had the largest shipyard in the world. The doomed Titanic was built here. If you come here, go and see the Titanic Experience, it’s really great! I also love fantasy stuff! Did you know that parts of Game of Thrones were filmed here?

And, no, I don’t live in Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth. I live in Canberra. The story goes that Canberra was only built because the cities of Sydney and Melbourne couldn’t agree on which of them should be the capital. Canberra is often called ‘the bush capital’ because there are large areas of natural plants in the city.

There are many, many kinds of cats in the world. Some are tame and some are wild. All cats, except the cheetah, can pull in their claws. Here are a few more interesting facts about five special cats. The black-footed cat lives in Africa. It is the smallest wild cat in the world, it weighs only about two kilos. The black-footed cat is a desert cat and it can live without drinking water. It gets the water it needs from its food. The lynx has funny-looking ears with tufts. It has long legs and big paws. Its big paws help it to walk better on snow. It sleeps most of the day. Lynxes can live more than 20 years. There are lynxes in Canada and in Scandinavia.
The puma is a big cat from America. The puma is so big that it can kill cows or horses. It can jump more than ten metres forwards because it has very strong hind legs.

Animals The Siberian tiger is the biggest cat animal in the world. It can weigh up to 200 kilos. A tiger can hear very well and it can see six times better than a human in the dark. Many tigers like water. They are strong swimmers and love to bathe in pools and lakes. They hunt fish too. The cheetah is easy to recognize because it has spots under its eyes that look like teardrops. The cheetah is the fastest animal on Earth. It can run at more than 110 kilometres an hour – as fast as a car on the motorway. The cheetah’s whole body is built to run. It has long legs and even the tail helps the cheetah to run fast. Its tail works like a rudder and helps the cheetah to turn quickly when n it runs. Only one paw at a time touches the ground when the cheetah runs. It flies through the air. Isn’t that amazing?
