How a summer can make a difference Hello, it’s ‘London’ Lee here. Remember me? I come from North London, but I moved to Brighton last year. I didn’t like it at first, and I was angry with my parents because they wanted to move away from my friends. The funny thing is, I took out my anger on everyone and everything else. I was grumpy and sarcastic, and I found things to moan about all the time. But those days are over, I reckon. Happy days are here again. You see, the holidays were brilliant: it rained quite a lot. Now I know that it’s not the sort of weather most people like, but if you love to play video games... Nobody in the flat complained when I sat down in front of the computer for a session of World of Warcraft. When the weather was decent Dad and I spent time together. We went to Brighton beach and we visited a few other towns nearby. When Mum had two weeks’ holidays we travelled up to London and stayed with some friends. I got to see all my mates again, and we had the best time in the world. The big news, however, is that Mum is going to have a baby. That’s right, I’m going to be a big brother! Dad says I have to wait 6

until the end of January. I am so excited, although it’s ages away. I wondered why we moved into a three-bedroom flat, and now it’s obvious. I can be a bit slow sometimes. Oh, by the way, why did I say ‘London’ Lee? Well, I’ve got a nickname now. I hung around with Karim, Emma and their friends the last few weeks of the summer holidays, and they started calling me ‘London’ as a joke. After a while everybody used the name and it just stuck. How cool is that?

So, what do you think about our school project? You mean the one about Australia? Well, I think it’s pretty exciting. Don’t you? I suppose so. But doing a project about Australia for the whole year seems like a long, long time. I guess so. Still, we need a lot of time if we’re going to learn about the different states, animals, people and places of Australia. After all, it’s a huge country! Yeah, you’re right. And it’s going to be fun writing emails to our new cyber pals in Oz too! Yes, I’m looking forward to that. You know what? Something is still bothering me! Why are you so enthusiastic about this project? You usually hate stuff like this! I know, I know. You see, I’m in the same group as Lee… We went out on a few dates during the summer and I’m beginning to like him. A lot. Oh, now I get it! Well, come on then! Tell me more…

Dive under! amarina lives in darwin, australia, and she’s crazy about diving. However, a few weeks ago, she had a scary experience. Here’s her story:

My best friend’s dad is a dive master on his own boat. That means he can take tourists out to the reef and go scuba diving with them. I often go out with him. I help him with the boat and he lets me use his scuba diving gear for free.

One hot sunny day, I was out on the boat with my friend, Jackie, and her parents, Dave and Liz. Jackie decided to stay on the boat with her mum while Dave and I explored the reef. We put on our diving gear and went exploring. The water was light blue and there were lots of amazing things to see: orange and white clown fish, beautiful shells, brightly-coloured parrot fish and, of course, the pinks and purples of the coral reef itself. I even saw a giant clam and a couple of sharks. They weren’t dangerous but I was a bit worried and was glad when they swam away from us. Just then, a couple of enormous fish swam by. They were the biggest fish I have ever seen! I was scared but Dave smiled and started patting them. I did the same. It was a fantastic dive – the best one ever! But then – suddenly – something awful happened, and I got really really frightened. listen to amarina’s story to see what happens next!  To be continued on the CD.
