Inside the front door were some coat hooks. Every time the doorbell rang, the parrot flew up to the hooks to see who was coming. When the bell rang one morning, she flew up as usual. I opened the door and there was a man outside. He wanted to sell us an alarm system for the house. The man stepped in, talking all the time.

He didn’t see the big bird sitting on the hooks. She was leaning down towards him. The bird got closer and closer and finally she had her head just behind his ear. Suddenly the man felt that there was something behind him. He stopped talking and turned around slowly. The parrot was looking at him without blinking. Then she said, “Hello!” in a very clear voice. The man went all white in the face and fainted.

He looked at me and at the bird and said, “With that bloody thing in the house, you don’t need an alarm system.” Then he left.
