bricklayer • concrete worker • decorative plasterer • drywall builder • carpenter • joiner • fitter/plumber • electrician • roofer • tiler • floor layer • painter • architectural draftsman
a) snickare
At top of the organizational structure is the owner of the site, who puts up the money for the building project and commissions the architect. The architect is responsible for the design of the building. Next come the civil engineer, who is responsible for the technical design and the quantity surveyor. His or her job is to find out how much a building will cost.
c) taktäckare
d) elektriker
Then come the companies that build the new building. Usually a main contractor is responsible for overseeing the building work. The contracts manager or site agent works for the main contractor. He or she is responsible for making sure that the work is completed in line with the architect’s plans and on time. Lower in the structure is the foreman. Often the main contractor brings in other companies to take on parts of the work – these companies are called subcontractors.
l) betongarbetare
Next come the tradesmen. They are qualified skilled workers who have completed a three-year apprenticeship in their trade. Workers who haven’t yet completed their threeyear training work alongside the tradesmen. They are called apprentices. 15

The building site plan
1
T1
Asking where things are Can you tell me where the toilets are, please? – They are next to the tool store.
Once the site is cleared, the first job is to draw up the site plan. All of the people working on the construction of a new building need this before building work can begin.
10
Asking and giving directions
Read the language box before you listen to the dialogues.
Why we need a site plan
Find the English expressions in the text which have the same meaning as the Swedish words below. Each English expression consists of two words.
5
3
The site plan is very important for several reasons. Firstly, on most building sites there is not very much space. But there are a lot of things needed to construct a new building. For example, these include plant such as cranes. They also include storage areas for building materials, as well as toilets and restrooms for the building workers. The site plan helps to use space on the building site in an effective way.
Can you tell me where the site office is, please? – The site office is behind the accommodation hut.
beside – vid sidan om, behind – bakom, opposite – mittemot, in front of – framför, between – mellan
It also makes it easier to put things in the right place. For example, if storage areas – or stores – for building materials are too far from the site access road, lorries cannot make deliveries easily. But if the storage areas are near the road, then there is no problem. The site plan helps the site manager to organize effective site logistics.
T1
Now listen to the CD and label the site plan.
A good site plan helps everyone to use the space in the best way. This means that work on the new building is faster and easier.
