13 Dear John and Dear Jane Reading

Read the text and answer the questions. 1 What is a Dear John letter? 2 Why is the name John used in the expression? 3 When do you use the expression John Doe? Do you know what a Dear John letter is? It is an expression for a particular type of letter written by a woman or a girl to her husband or boyfriend saying that all is over between them and that their relationship has to end, usually because the woman has met somebody else. The exact origins of the phrase are not 100 % known, but it is believed to have been invented by Americans during World War II. At this time thousands of American troops were stationed overseas for long periods. Sometimes the wives or girlfriends back in the US decided to begin a relationship with another man – and the only way they cold communicate the unhappy news was by letter – a Dear John letter! Here is an example of a typical Dear John letter:

“Dear John, I have found someone else whom I think the world of. I think the only way out is for us to get a divorce …”

The letters usually began like that, the letters that told of infidelity on the part of the wives or girlfriends. The men called them “Dear Johns”. Why Dear John? The name John was – and still is – a very common name and it is also the name used in many other terms to refer to a man when you do not want to be too personal. In the United States the name John Doe is used for a person whose true identity is intended to be anonymous. Male corpses whose identity is unknown are also known by the name of John Doe. But what if the letter is not intended for a man? What if the body is that of a woman? Then it’s Dear Jane and Jane Doe!

n Roman times, approximately from 44 BC to 476 AD, public entertainment was a very important aspect of life. In Rome, the capital of the Roman Empire, there was an enormous arena, the Colosseum. It was used to host different kinds of violent entertainment. The name arena comes from the Latin word for sand; the arena was covered in sand to soak up the blood left over from the various spectacles. The most popular event to take place in the arena was gladiator combats. The gladiators, who were professional fighters in ancient Rome, were picked from slaves, war criminals and prisoners of war. They would fight against each other, wild animals or condemned criminals. At the end of a fight, when one gladiator showed that he was defeated by raising a finger, it was up to the spectators to decide whether the loser should live or die. If the audience felt that the two gladiators had fought equally well they were both allowed to live. Some gladiators even managed to win their freedom and were allowed to retire – often to train other fighters.

Another popular type of show was the animal hunt where gladiators – or criminals – fought a great variety of wild beasts such as rhinos, hippos, elephants, lions, panthers, leopards, crocodiles or ostriches. The animal hunts were often staged on a huge scale: in 107 BC there was a contest involving 11,000 animals and 10,000 gladiators and the show went on for 123 days!
