Miss Ghost

For S who, several years ago, asked me to write an easy read book. Finally it is finished!

1. Ebba and Ivar Ivar sat in the kitchen. He ate his breakfast and drew pictures of monsters. Ivar loved to draw. His sister Ebba sat at the other side of the table. She looked out the window. It was dark out there. Yellow leaves whirled in the air. – It’s seven thirty, Dad called. You have to go to school! – Ahum, Ivar said. But he didn’t listen. – Ahum, Ebba said. 3

She did not listen either. – It’s easy to tell that you are twins, Dad said. You are just as hopeless and just as nice, both of you. Now, hurry up! When Ebba and Ivar were about to leave for school, Dad said: – Watch out for the ghosts in the park. – Oh stop it, Dad, Ivar said. – Dad, stop it, Ebba said. When they got to the park, it was dark. – Do you believe in ghosts? Ebba asked. – No, Ivar said. – Neither do I, Ebba said. – But you never can tell, Ivar said. – What if there are ghosts, Ebba said. They ran fast through the park. 4

2. The Substitute Teacher When Ebba and Ivar came to school, the others were already in the classroom. Their teacher was not there. But then the door was opened and the principal came in. – Hello, he said. I’m the principal at this school. – We know, everybody said. – Your teacher is ill. You will get a substitute teacher, the principal said. 5

Everyone started whispering. A few of them giggled. But when the substitute entered the room, everyone became quiet. – This is Miss Sparre, the principal said. She will be your teacher for a whole month. Be nice to her. Ebba stared. Ivar stared. Everybody stared. Miss Sparre was very tall and very thin. She had long, black hair and wore a long, black dress. Her face was white. – Is she never outside in the sunshine? Ebba whispered to Ivar. Miss Sparre smiled. – No, Ebba. I don’t like the sun. 6

When a substitute teacher takes over Ebba’s and Ivar’s class, the students notice right away that she is not like other teachers. Miss Sparre is very tall and very thin and she has ice cold hands. Her face is white – because she cannot stand the sun. On top of it all, she seems able to read your mind … Miss Ghost is the first book in a terribly funny series.
