Have fun! Christer Bermheden Matts Winblad

Margaret and Arthur Howell are staying at a hotel outside Newcastle to celebrate Arthur’s eightieth birthday. When they step out of the lift after breakfast one morning, they see a man leave their room and run down the corridor. They find nothing missing in their room but they call the manager who sends up Brian Boone from security.

10

Boone:

So, what did he look like, this person?

Arthur:

He was young …

Margaret:

Young?! He was at least fifty!

Arthur:

… and short.

Margaret:

He was not! In fact, he was rather tall.

Boone:

Perhaps you could describe his clothes?

Arthur:

Certainly. He was wearing a suit, checked, I think …

Margaret:

It wasn’t a suit, Arthur dear. It was more like a jacket and a pair of track suit trousers – baggy, sort of loosefit.

Boone:

Track suit trousers? Are you sure?

Margaret:

Absolutely. And they were different colours – green jacket and grey trousers.

Boone:

A shirt? Tie?

Arthur:

Yes, a striped shirt and a blue tie.

Margaret:

But, Arthur. You must be blind! He was wearing a polo neck jumper – black – no shirt, no tie.

Boone:

A cap, maybe?

Arthur:

No cap.

Margaret:

Right, no cap.

Boone:

I see. Well, to sum this up: We’ll keep our eyes open for a young man of about fifty, somewhere between short and rather tall, wearing a checked suit, which is really a green jacket, and grey track suit trousers, loose-fit. Also a striped shirt and blue tie, or a black polo neck jumper but no hat.

Margaret:

Exactly, young man. Right, Arthur?

Arthur:

Spot on!

6B Dressed to kill 1

Weekend’s reporter Ella Lewis talked to two young people early one Saturday evening. She wanted to find out how they dress at home and when they go out at night.

Libby, what do you wear at home? 5

Oh this. Just old jeans, a jumper and trainers.

And how do you dress for a night out?

10

15

Almost all my clothes are second-hand. I bought a skirt this afternoon at Oxfam, but I chose not to wear it tonight. Instead I’ll go for my ‘housewife’ look. I found just the perfect dress at Vintage. Mum gave me a scarf and her old cardigan with cool old buttons. My boots are new, though. From Diverse in Islington. But I never buy designer clothes where you can easily see the designer’s name. I often like to stand out a little, and I thought of putting on my orange mittens tonight, but I won’t.

Jake Elsworth, 17 How do you dress for a night out, Jake?

20

25

I usually wear a nice suit, a nice shirt. Neat, if you know what I mean. And I buy everything new, never second-hand. Who knows what you will find in old clothes … And, believe me, I wear normal clothes. Like this tie. I saw it in the shop window at Sefton and just had to buy it. Nice, isn’t it? And black shoes are always right. I don’t dress up like many people do, just to stand out. It’s really silly the way some people dress, like wearing mittens when going out to a club or a party. In the middle of summer! Pathetic, that’s what it is. What will they put on next time? Coloured tights and wellies? Huh?

And what do you usually wear at home? Oh, just jeans and a T-shirt – and my baseball cap, of course.
