Colourful India
The republic of India is a huge country and there is really nothing you could call typically Indian. Let’s learn about how people live and about the various climate zones, the sacred animals, the spicy food and Bollywood.

• Take a look at page 28–31 in your Textbooks. What do you see? Painted people, a crowded street/traffic jam, a shepherd, a flooded street/ some boys playing in the water, vegetables, a woman feeding some rats, spices, a cow/a sacred cow, Indian dancers/Bollywood stars, a map of India. • Let’s listen to this text about India. Most people in India are Hindus (about 80%). To a Hindu the cow is a sacred animal and

mustn’t be harmed in any way. Many other animals are also sacred. There is a temple called the Karni Mata Temple where they treat rats as sacred animals. There are more than 20,000 rats there and when people visit the temple they even feed them.

As most Hindus don’t eat meat, there are many vegetarians in India. The food is very spicy and often served with rice, bread and yoghurt. They use a lot of different spices and always make their own mixture for each dish. 70% of all the world’s spices come from India.

• What is a vegetarian? A person who doesn’t eat meat. • Describe a typical Bollywood film/musical? It’s a romantic love story with songs, music and dancing.

India is seven times as big as Sweden, and its population is growing very quickly. In the big cities people live a modern life but it is more traditional in the countryside. About one third of the population doesn’t earn enough money to feed their families. New Delhi, the capital of India, is one of the most polluted cities in the world.

You will find all sorts of animals in India. It is for example the home of lions, tigers, elephants and antelopes. Elephants are very good to have as they are sometimes used for work, like ploughing fields or moving and carrying heavy things. There are also many reptiles around, including king cobras, pythons, crocodiles and lizards. You will find wildlife mostly in northern India but their natural HABITAT is getting smaller because of India’s growing population. The Bengal tiger is the national symbol of India – but it is endangered. There aren’t many tigers left and people are FORBIDDEN to shoot them.

De försöker sedan, genom muntlig kommunikation, sätta dem i rätt ordning, så en korrekt text bildas. Eleverna läser därefter texten högt tillsammans och besvarar muntligt de medföljande frågorna.
Memory – British/American Sid. 81–83 Förberedelser Klipp isär och laminera memorykorten. Eleverna spelar Memory med ordfältet British/American. De parar ihop de brittiska och amerikanska orden som betyder samma sak. Vänder spelaren upp två kort som hör ihop, får spelaren ta upp dessa och försöka en gång till, annars går turen vidare. Spelet fortsätter tills alla kort på bordet är slut, den spelare som har flest par vinner.
The odd one out Sid. 84 Eleverna arbetar i par och läser ordraderna ordentligt. De försöker se ett samband mellan tre av orden och förklarar/motiverar sedan muntligt för varandra varför det fjärde ordet inte passar in. Här finns det flera olika förklaringar som kan vara rätt.
Verb snake Sid. 85–87 Förberedelser Klipp isär och laminera verbkorten. Dela ut alla korten till eleverna, alla har minst ett kort på handen. Den elev som har kortet det står start på börjar, säger verbet på svenska (vara; bli) och sedan infinitiv- och preteritumformerna på engelska (be, was/were). Den elev som har perfekt participformen av samma verb (been) tar vid, säger sedan det nya verbet på svenska (bli), följt av infinitiv- och preteritumformen på engelska (become, became) och den elev som har perfekt participformen (become) fortsätter. Spelet fortgår tills eleven med perfekt participformen av verbet skriva (written) säger the end. Denna aktivitet kan göras på tid, så att eleverna får tävla mot sig själva och försöka slå sina föregående tider.
