The exercises are marked with icons pointing out the skill or proficiency you will practise. The icons are:

listening

speaking   reading writing

DISTANCE LEARNING If you are studying independently, there are some things you need to think about when it comes to the speaking part of the course. You will find many exercises marked with “speaking” icons, because in a classroom you would have classmates to talk to. However, if you study independently you will need to find other ways to practise your speaking skills. Moreover, you will need to practise speaking in different contexts and to describe, argue and discuss. To improve your speaking proficiency, you need a wide range of practice.

THE AIM OF THE COURSE To learn more about the aim of the course, including how you will be graded, you can look at Skolverket’s Läroplan för engelska, which is available on Skolverket’s website, both in English and in Swedish. The main goals include: 1) Understanding of spoken and written English, and the ability to interpret content. 2) The ability to express oneself and communicate in English in speech and writing. 3) The ability to use different language strategies in different contexts. 4) The ability to adapt language to different purposes, recipients, and situations. 5) The ability to discuss and reflect on living conditions, social issues and cultural features in different contexts and parts of the world where English is used. Read more about the course and find the criteria for grading here: www.skolverket.se/ laroplaner-amnen-och-kurser/gymnasieutbildning/gymnasieskola/eng

STUDYING A LANGUAGE AT AN ADVANCED LEVEL To succeed in your English studies, you will need to set some rules for yourself and structure your studies. Put aside a good amount of time for your studies and be an active student. Make a schedule for your studies to organise your work for each week. Plan your time, check what you have learned after each unit and do not forget to review. Evaluate your progress and your learning continuously in order to focus on your studies in the best possible way.

The four skills or proficiencies When you master a language, you can speak, listen, read and write in that language with a good understanding of it. That’s why the Activities in the Study Guide are marked with icons for each. It is important to be aware of what you are practising so that you can focus on the right thing. Speaking: You practise in discussions, and by giving presentations. Listening: You practise when you listen to texts and to discussions. Listen to presentations, films, series, TED talks or podcasts. You learn from everything you listen to, including music. Reading: You practise by reading all the Solid Gold 3 texts, but also by reading extra books or web texts. If you want some suggestion of what to read, you can ask your teacher for a list of novels by contemporary writers. Writing: You practise in the writing exercises, which include different genres: formal letter, discussion essay, summary, argumentative essay, poem or song lyrics, CV and a short story. In addition to speaking, listening, reading and writing, it is important to learn the difference between informal and formal English. When you give a speech or write you will learn to analyse the purpose and the recipient of your work and use the correct language for it. You will not find grammar explanations or exercises in the book, but they are in the digital material. There you will find a diagnostic test for the grammar exercises from Solid Gold 1, and one for the exercises from Solid Gold 2. After you have done these, you will find what you need to revise. After that go to Grammar exercises and do the exercises.

Self-assessment What is your level of English now and what level do you want to achieve? To reach the next level, you must know your starting point, and where you are now. Think about the four skills and evaluate your own English skills in relation to them. What skills do you need to focus on and put more effort into? In your previous studies, English courses 5 and 6 (or the equivalent), the focus has been on everyday vocabulary, grammar and correctness in sentences. In English 7, the focus is more on correct vocabulary and expressions in a certain situation, such as a more formal situation. Different genres require specific words and phrases. In Solid Gold 3, the attention is on vocabulary practice. What can you do to acquire a larger and more precise vocabulary? How can you become a better writer? Along the way, after each unit, assess your skills and your progress. Reflect on your learning process, what parts you are still struggling with and how many new words you have learnt.

Some questions to help you assess: • How many words have I learnt by studying this unit? • What feedback did I get from my teacher on my writing assignment? • What kind of oral presentations have I made? • Have I improved my speaking skills? • Were the texts in the unit easy or difficult? • What extra reading did I do and what was it about? Assess your level of English regularly and try to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Then describe your goals within each skill and decide how you can work to achieve them. For example, if your weak point is writing essays, make it your plan to write 200 words daily on different subjects. Switch between discussion or argumentative essay on different subjects. Making concrete plans like this is an effective way to success.

UNIT 1. IDENTITY AND

CULTURE

OBJECTIVES • • • •

Learn about different cultural contexts Learn to write a discussion essay Make a speech to introduce yourself Work with vocabulary, idioms and communication

IN THIS UNIT Globalization sometimes leads us to think that communication has become easier between people from different countries. Technically that is true, but when it comes to what we communicate it is important to be attentive to what we say and do. It is better to think twice before you do or say anything if you are not in your normal surroundings. Our communication with other people is the subject in this unit. The texts are about what we share on social media and how we act and react in intercultural situations and in contexts out of the ordinary. Before you start with the texts and exercises go to the Resource section on page 135, and read about the three keys, the letters S, L and P. The tips may help you to structure and improve the way you learn.

GRAMMAR DIAGNOSIS Find a structure for your own grammar revision. There is no grammar course here in this study guide, but there are grammar exercises, with accompanying grammar explanations, in the digital material, under Grammar exercises. You are advised to do the diagnostic tests in both Solid Gold 1 Grammar and Solid Gold 2 Grammar. When you have completed the tests you will get feedback on which sections you should study to improve your grammar. There are links to the grammar rules from the exercises.

SHARING IS CARING? In this text Randi Zuckerberg discusses the function of social media, in this case Facebook. What does it mean to people and what does it do to us? Zuckerberg explains that people need to draw a line between what is interesting for our friends to know about us and what information is better suited to

stay more private. The exercises focus on vocabulary and phrases to use in discussions and you will also write a discussion essay. You will find the text on page 10.

ACTIVITY 1 Start with a short discussion exercise 001, page 172. Your teacher will provide you with questions to discuss. Then read the text on page 10.

ACTIVITY 2: Continue with speaking and discussing. There are four questions to discuss in Interact, exercise 002, on page 172. In the Extra Resource Section there are expressions and phrases to use in a discussion. They are organized under to give an opinion, to agree or disagree, to interrupt or to show interests, etc. They are useful and will help you to expand your ways of expression. You will find them in the Extra Resource Section, page 8 in the digital material. If you study on your own, write down your thoughts and reflections and try to expand on your comments.

ACTIVITY 3 Practise the vocabulary in Wordmatch/Spelling

.

ACTIVITY 4 In the next exercise you need to put adjectives to describe people in the correct gaps in the sentences, exercise 003 on page 172. If some of the adjectives are new to you, use them in a couple of sentences of your own to add them to your active vocabulary.

ACTIVITY 5 Exercise 004 on page 173 is a revision of the phrases you used in exercise 002. Here you will find useful phrases to use in discussions. Make sure you learn them by using them in sentences of your own. In exercise 005 on page 174 you are advised to turn to the Extra Resource Section, to revise and learn the phrases.

11   UnIT 1. IDEnTITY anD CULTUrE

ACTIVITY 6 Another speaking activity, this time debating, is exercise 006 on page 174. It is a group activity and if you study independently you need to find a way to perform activities like these. Prepare before the debate and turn to exercise 007 which advises you to study On debating in the Extra Resource Section pages 11–13 for more information on debating. You will find the Extra Resource Section in the digital material .

ACTIVITY 7 Following the debate about Facebook comes a writing task. In exercise 008 on page 174, you are to write a discussion essay about the same subject. Before you start, read pages 143–144 in the Resource Section on writing where you will find a step-by-step list and an example. Do you remember the use of linking words? They are words and phrases used to link your sentences to one another and to make your statements clearer and easier to read. Use the list of linking words and phrases on pages 163-166 in the Resource Section. When you have finished your writing go to the Checklist for writing in the Resource Section, page 150, for a last check of your writing before you hand it in.

SENEGAL This text written by Maya Angelou describes her embarrassment when behaving improperly whilst visiting a friend. She was invited by her friend but did not know the correct protocol in that environment. She concludes that in a new cultural context it is wiser to wait and see how people around you behave before acting yourself. What you think is right may not be so in some situations.

ACTIVITY 8 Read the text on page 12 and answer the questions in Textwork, exercise 009 on page 174.

12   UnIT 1. IDEnTITY anD CULTUrE

ACTIVITY 9 Discuss the questions in Interact, exercise 010 on page 174. Then practise the vocabulary in Wordmatch/Spelling . After that there is another exercise on vocabulary for you to do, Fill in the gaps, exercise 011 on page 175.

ACTIVITY 10 Exercise 012 is a test to check your English. Ask your teacher for the material Check your English.

LISTENING: AN ANYWHERE MAN This is a story about Magil Sunny Karam from Pakistan who lives and studies in the US. He is called Mike since Magil is too difficult for Americans to say. It gives a distance to his home country, but it also makes it harder for him to know who he really is and to know what he wants. The story is from The Flying Man, a novel written by the British writer Roopa Farooki. If, after listening, you want to read this extract from the novel, you can ask your teacher for it. You can use it as an extra reading text to study and analyse.

ACTIVITY 11 Read through the questions in Listen and answer, exercise 013 on page 175. Then listen to part 1 and answer the questions. Continue listening and answer the questions on part 2, page 176.

ACTIVITY 13 Practise the vocabulary in Wordmatch/Spelling . Then continue with Vocabulary: Definitions, exercise 015 on page 177. In this exercise you revise the words used in the listening exercise.

13   UnIT 1. IDEnTITY anD CULTUrE

Planner Remember to mark each task that you have completed in the Planner on page 9. There you can see what you have done so far and what remains for you to study in the unit. This enables you to reflect on your studies and helps you to structure and plan for them.

ACTIVITY 14 The next exercise is the first in the section Advanced Vocabulary Revision, exercise 016, which is about prepositions. In this section you will not only practise a more advanced vocabulary, but also idioms and phrases like verb phrases or the use of adjectives and nouns. There will also be exercises on word formation. Now do Prepositions 1 on page 264.

INEQUALITY MACHINES Erica studies at an elite university in Denver and is shocked by the culture clash she experiences there. Growing up in a Mexican-Chinese ghetto Erica finds that not only are the other students affluent, they also have cultural capital. They had travelled, read the right authors and knew how to structure their papers. For Erica, studying there feels like a cultural exchange program.

ACTIVITY 15 Read the text on page 14 and then answer the questions in Textwork, exercise 017 on page 178. Continue with exercise 018, Interact in a discussion.

ACTIVITY 16 Practise the vocabulary in Wordmatch/Spelling Synonyms, exercise 019 on page 178.

14   UnIT 1. IDEnTITY anD CULTUrE

ACTIVITY 18 Now it is time for the first exercise similar to those that you find in the Cambridge English exams. The exam in advanced English, CAE, is a qualification recognized all over the world. The test covers reading, listening, writing, speaking and grammar. Here you will find a type of reading/ vocabulary test. Go to exercise 021 on page 179 and then to Multiple choice-cloze, on page 278.

ACTIVITY 19 In the last exercise in unit 1, 022 on page 179, you will learn some idioms: Idioms to do with parts of the body. Read the A text and then use the idioms in text B.

Revision Take some time to revise the unit before you take the test. Check the exercises again and revise the new words and idioms.

Self-assessment and Learning Log In previous English courses you have regularly assessed your learning and you may have had a learning log. Continue with that practice because it helps you during your studies. Assess your English in: • • • • • •

Speaking Listening Reading Writing Vocabulary Grammar

Were there any difficult parts in this unit? Did you have enough opportunities to practise speaking? Write some comments in your Learning Log on the next page and reflect on your learning.

15   UnIT 1. IDEnTITY anD CULTUrE

Unit test Time to do the unit test. Ask your teacher for the test. If you study on your own you will have to check the answers with a Test Key, which your teacher will provide for you. Go through the test carefully and make sure you learn from your mistakes. If there are too many mistakes you will need to revise the unit again before you continue. Good luck!
