1 ENGLISH My Dream albert:

Hey Malik, do we have any homework for tomorrow?

malik:

What do you think? Of course we have! Do you want to know what it is?

albert:

Sure. That would be useful!

malik:

We’ve got Maths and Ms Gates told us to work as far as page 30.

albert:

Starting from what page?

malik:

Page 27.

albert:

Awesome! I’ve already done those exercises. What about French? Do we have French homework for tomorrow?

malik:

Yes, we do. You know that Mr Gaultier only comes in on Wednesdays. He asked us to learn the verbs on page 3 and read and listen to the short text on page 10.

albert:

Hmm … yes, I remember now. How do you work with your French, Malik?

malik:

Well, I need to practise pronunciation and spelling so I use the online book a lot. I imitate and say after. There are a bunch of word and spelling exercises there and I can even record my voice and then press play and compare it with the correct answer!

albert:

Wow, I’ve never tried that! That’s what I’ll do tonight, then. My dad told me that I ought to study about 30 minutes to an hour every day. So, when I get home I’ll have a snack first and then I’ll do my homework. Your way!

malik:

But how come Al, you can never remember what homework we have?

albert:

I guess I have this dream of a week without having anything to do.

malik:

That’s a great dream! Let me give you a piece of advice. For French you can watch some clips on YouTube. You’ll learn French in a new way.

When I Study Harry When I study (I do, honestly!) I always use my computer. I write essays, do projects and I also use online dictionaries. That works for me.

Kylie When I study French, I always listen to French songs. That helps me remember how to say the words. And I can sing and learn at the same time. Great!

Kate I like to use a pencil and paper when I study. I bought this really neat notebook in New York City and I use it in English. We write all kinds of essays.

Gopal I always study with a friend. We meet an hour before cricket practice and go through our homework together. Schoolwork is a lot more fun if you can do it with a friend!

2 FRIENDS Jen Has Changed Schools Back in school! Fall is here and I miss my friend, Jenny. This year we were allowed to change schools if we wanted to, so Jenny decided to go to a music school. We don’t live near each other, so I don’t get to see her after school either. We chat and try to get together at weekends. But it’s hard, really hard to stay friends with someone you don’t see every day. I miss U Jen!!! But I also have some new friends. I met Gopal in New York City a while back. He’s from India. I also met Kylie from Australia and Harry from England. I have them all on Facebook. Kylie has some great pictures – she’s singing in a show – all glitter and glamour. Not like my boring life right now – just schoolwork and more schoolwork!

An Icon of Mine Kate is still very active in the Students’ Council. That keeps her going when school is just too much. Last year the school had a campaign in support of Malala Yousafzai. This year they’re organizing a fundraising event for the Green Belt Movement. Kate really admires Wangari Maathai, an activist from Kenya who started the Green Belt Movement with some friends. Here is her story. Once upon a time there was a young woman called Wangari, who worked as a teacher in Kenya. She heard the women from the farms in her village complain that they didn’t have enough water. Wangari saw how the lakes nearby had started to dry up and disappear. Then she heard the women talk about how they had to walk for miles to collect firewood so they could cook meals for their families. There were no trees left near the village because the government had cut them down to make room for more farms. Wangari knew that she had to do something, so she set up a meeting with the women from the village. “The government must help us to get water and plant new trees”, one woman said. “It’s the people who must make things change,” Wangari replied. “We need trees to stop the water from disappearing.”

“But we have no money to buy trees!” another woman exclaimed. “We don’t have to buy trees from a nursery. We can grow them ourselves for free.” Then Wangari showed the women how they could plant seeds from the forest in cans. They watered them every day and when the saplings were big enough, they planted them in their backyards. Soon other women from other villages also started planting trees and – like the trees that sprouted from the tiny seeds in the cans – the movement grew. Wangari Maathai’s idea resulted in The Green Belt Movement that expanded to other countries beyond Kenya’s borders. Over forty million trees were planted and Wangari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. How did she celebrate? By planting a tree of course!

Time to go home! Boo hoo! I feel really sad now I’m leaving. It’s been a great holiday – the best one ever! I just wish it could have been longer. Our bags are packed and we’re in the hotel lobby, now waiting for the airport bus. I look a bit different from when I left home, though. I’ve got lots of freckles, but also a really nice suntan. I wonder if Harry will notice? Right. Goodbye Goa! Goodbye sunshine and welcome back to cold, wet Manchester! Ugh!!

GOA VLOG

Spent a lot of time today posting photos and writing a postcard to my grandma. I bought my friend, Harry two computer games at the market yesterday. They were so cheap! Pirated copies probably! I also bought five Bollywood films. I love all that music and dancing – and romance! Awesome! Mum bought a couple of handbags, a small wooden statue, a cotton hammock and a ‘fake’ Rolex watch for Dad. I wonder if she’ll ever use the hammock? There’s not much room for it in our flat!

GOA VLOG

The food in Goa is delicious, with lots of dishes to choose from. Fish curry and rice is my favourite so far. But it’s a bit spicy, so you need to drink lots of water with it! Tonight, we’re off to the ‘night market’ to do some shopping with Mum. We’ll go there by rickshaw. Mum’s a real ‘shopaholic’! Our suitcases are nearly full already!

9 THE JUNGLE BOOK – READING The Jungle Book Mowgli is a boy who grows up in the jungle without his parents. He is raised by wolves.

Main Characters Mowgli (the man-cub)

In the next ten or eleven years, Mowgli had wonderful times with the wolves. He grew up with Animal Characters Akela (the leader of the wolf pack) the cubs, and Father Wolf taught him well. He Bagheera (the black panther) learned to live in the jungle. He understood every Shere Khan (the tiger) sound, every change in the wind, every note of a Raksha (the mother wolf) bird’s song, every jump of a little fish in the water. Baloo (the bear) At other times, Mowgli sat in the sun and slept. Tabaqui (a jackal and Shere Khan’s Then he ate, and slept again. When he was dirty spy and messenger) or hot, he swam in the small jungle rivers. He climbed trees with Bagheera. He took his place at Pack meetings. The wolves were afraid of him when he looked into their eyes. They turned away. But he helped them when they cut their feet in the jungle. Sometimes Mowgli went down from the mountains at night. He watched the villagers in their little houses. But men were dangerous – he knew that. Sometimes Bagheera showed him hunters in the jungle. He grew strong and brave. ‘Be careful of Shere Khan,’ Mother Wolf told him. ‘One day, you will have to kill him.’ But Mowgli didn’t remember that lesson, because he was only a boy, and not a young wolf. Akela was now older and weaker, so Shere Khan was often near Mowgli in the jungle. The tiger wanted to make friends with the younger wolves. They followed him because he sometimes left food for them. Akela didn’t like it, but he was too old. He couldn’t stop them. cub unge; valp wolf varg pack flock panther panter spy spion

11 DIGITAL READING Searching for Information Kylie’s class is having Social Sciences with Ms. Walker. Kylie is at home ill and David has promised to share his notes with her. All the class notes are usually uploaded to the online classroom, so Kylie will have no problem catching up. ms. walker:

Good morning everyone!

class:

Good morning, Ms. Walker.

ms. walker:

Anyone absent today?

david:

Yes, Kylie. She’s ill.

ms. walker:

OK. Let’s hope she’s feeling better soon. Today we’re going to discuss the Internet and the use of various sources when searching for information.

david:

Do we really need that? I use my phone every day. I use it for music and even for my French homework since I have an app that helps me translate all the new words.

ms. walker:

Yes, you do need it, David. Just wait and see. We’ll work from my computer and you can follow on the screen, alright? So, which web browser should we use?

lily:

I always use Internet Explorer.

chloe:

And I always use Google Chrome.

ms. walker:

OK. Let’s go for the Google Chrome browser. So first, let’s click on the icon that belongs to Google Chrome. Here we go. And now what? Now we need to use a search engine.

lachlan:

Let’s go for Google – it’s right there.

ms. walker:

Yes. To make it simple, let’s look for information about our country, Australia. So I’m going to write ‘Australia facts’ in the search field. That will be our keywords. So what do we get?

david:

ms. walker:

Right and what’s Wikipedia?

lily:

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia written by the people who use it. At least that’s what my mum told me.

ms. walker:

That’s correct, Lily. But how reliable is Wikipedia?

lily:

Well, my mum said that it’s updated all the time, so we can probably get good facts from there.

ms. walker:

Yes, that’s also correct. But let’s use the official Australian tourist website. So class, do you know the difference between a web page and a website? Or does your mother know, Lily?

lily:

(laughing) No, she doesn’t, but I do.

ms. walker:

Let’s hear, then.

lily:

A web page is a document online. And a website is a combination of many web pages.

ms. walker:

That’s a great explanation, Lily! So what does the header say?

lachlan:

It says the name of the organization which is the official Australian tourist website.

ms. walker:

Good. And what can we find on the navigation bar?

chloe:

Er… The headings are: Places to go, Things to do, Plan your trip and Aussie News Today. Can we look at the drop-down menu?

ms. walker:

I’m not sure there is one. But is there a footer text?

david:

Do you mean the words at the bottom of the web page?

ms. walker:

Yes, that’s right.

david:

It looks like you can find information about who’s created the site plus contact information.

ms. walker:

Right. Now, I want you to try to find specific information on the site. Work in pairs. Using the website, try to find facts about Tasmania or the Great Barrier Reef or anything else you’re interested in.

How to Make a Vlog

1 Content

• Brainstorm subjects you’re interested in which you think will be fun for your viewers. • Make sure to narrow down your topic and research it online. • You can also choose to talk about an everyday topic from your life.

2 Plan and practise • Plan a beginning, middle and an end. • Write a manuscript saying what you’re going to talk about. • Practise what you’ll be saying by talking in front of a mirror, a camera or a friend.

3 Record your vlog / Filming • Use your device and set it up. Do a test recording. Can you hear and see yourself well? • Use a selfie stick if needed or connect a microphone/headphones with a microphone.

4 Edit and improve • Is the audio and video OK? What needs to be cut? What needs to be added and recorded again? Do you need sound effects or pictures? • Show the vlog to someone and ask for feedback.

5 Present / Publish / Share • Show your vlog to the world!

MAGIC PAGES

Netiquette Stop and think before you click • Remember there’s a real person receiving your comments, videos, messages etc. • Don’t type in ALL CAPS! If you do, it will look like you are SCREAMING!!! • Read through or run a spell check before you post or send.

Think before you share • Always ask for permission before posting photos or videos of others. • Think about your post. Is it: True? Helpful? Inspiring? Necessary? Kind? • If you’re using someone else’s material, make sure you’re allowed to and name your sources.

Save your work • Save your work regularly. • If you work together with a friend make sure both of you have a copy of the file. • Don’t delete files that belong to others.

Stay safe and think critically • Keep your passwords secret. • Don’t download files or messages unless you trust the person who sent it. If something seems strange, talk about it with a grown-up. • Before you believe something you’ve seen or heard online, check the information.

ENGLISH My Dream ALBERT: Hey Malik, do we have

any homework for tomorrow? MALIK: Of course we have!

Do you want to know what it is? ALBERT: Sure. That would be useful. MALIK: We’ve got Maths and French. ALBERT: How do you work with your French, Malik? MALIK: Well, I need to practise pronunciation and

spelling so I use the online book a lot. I imitate and say after. There are many word and spelling exercises there and I can even record my voice and then press play and compare it with the correct answer! ALBERT: Wow, I’ve never tried that!

That’s what I’ll do tonight then. MALIK: But how come Al, you can never

remember what homework we have? ALBERT: I guess I have this dream of a week

without having anything to do. MALIK: That’s a great dream!

FRIENDS Jen Has Changed Schools Back in school! Fall is here and I miss my friend Jenny. I met Gopal in New York City.

An Icon of Mine Kate really admires Wangari Maathai, an activist from Kenya who started the Green Belt Movement with some friends. Here is her story.

Once upon a time there was a young woman called Wangari, who worked as a teacher in Kenya. She heard the women from the farms in her village complain that they didn’t have enough water. Then she heard the women talk about how they had to walk for miles to collect firewood so they could cook meals for their families. Wangari knew that she had to do something, so she set up a meeting with the women from the village. “We need trees to stop the water from disappearing.” Wangari said. The women started planting trees
