All aboard!

Time to take a ride through the history of trains.

How it all began

The first trains did not have engines, whistles or steel tracks! In the early 1500s, miners in Germany and England used horses to pull wagons full of coal on wooden rails. Those wooden rails did not last long. These days, railway tracks are made of steel.

Full steam ahead

In 1825, the world’s first passenger train hit the tracks! It was a steam train called Locomotion No. 1, which was built by George Stephenson. He didn’t just build the train, he built train stations too.

Steel rails are tough and can handle a billion train wheels before you need to replace them! Fun fact

Stephenson’s most famous steam train was the Rocket. It was very fast for its time (48km/h) and people were scared they wouldn’t be able to breathe!

Hello diesel

Diesel engines came along at the beginning of the 20th century –and by the 1950s, they were used all over the world.

A single diesel engine can pull a train that weighs more than 1,600 elephants!

The future

Have you heard of maglev trains? They don’t touch the tracks at all: they float above the rails using magnets! The future of trains looks fantastic!

Going electric

The world’s first electric underground – called the Tube in the UK – opened in London in 1890. Soon, other cities like Paris and New York built their own underground systems.

Fast forward to 1964 when Japan launched the electric Shinkansen bullet train that runs above the ground. Nowadays, modern bullet trains can reach speeds of up to 320 km/h.

The Shinkansen is such a smooth ride that you can balance a coin on its edge inside the train while it is going at full speed.
