Characters in Vega’s Adventure in India Vega Vega is 11 years old. She lives in England with her brother, Leo, their father and a pet snake called Monty.
Dad and Leo This is Vega’s dad and her little brother Leo.

The story so far … Where are Vega and Leo? They are in India, visiting their father. He is working there for a year. During this time, Vega and her family travel around India. What about school? The children do all their schoolwork online. But who is looking after Vega’s pet snake, Monty? Kat is looking after Monty while Vega is in India. (Kat is Vega’s best friend.)

CHAPTER 1
Welcome to India
“Stand tall and straight. Now bend your right knee and put it on your left leg. Find your balance. Find your balance.” Vega wonders how she can find her balance. It is baking hot outside. It feels like the inside of an oven – or a sauna. Sweat is running down her face in big drops. No – not drops. Rivers of sweat are running down her face. Her T-shirt is wet, and her face is red.

She looks quickly to her right. Her brother Leo is standing still on one leg. “Look – I’m a tree,” he whispers loudly. “Sssh!” says her dad. He is not standing straight. He is wobbling all over the place. Suddenly, he sits down with a loud thud. Vega and Leo look at each other, and then they burst out laughing. They put their hands over their mouths when they realize that the other yoga students are looking at them. They do not look happy. “Sorry!” Vega says quietly. Their yoga teacher looks at them and smiles. He has beautiful dark hair that comes down to his shoulders in soft curls and his eyes are very kind. “I think it’s time to rest on our yoga mats,” he says. Vega is thankful to lie down on her mat and relax. It is not easy doing yoga in the heat. She lies on her back. They are in a room with a roof but no windows. She can see green trees

outside and hear the birds singing. It is very relaxing. “Breathe in. Breathe out.” She listens to the teacher’s voice going up and down as he talks. It sounds like a lullaby. Vega closes her eyes and soon she is asleep. After a while, she hears a strange sound. Is that a car engine? Or is someone cutting logs with a saw? And if so, why? Then she hears Leo giggling. He cannot stop. She realizes that the strange noises are coming from her. “You fell asleep and started snoring,” Dad says. He is trying not to laugh. Even the other people in the yoga class are giggling. She is sure her face is as red as a tomato now because she is so embarrassed. “Let’s clear our minds. And focus on breathing in and out. In and out,” the teacher says. Sometimes it is not easy being a yoga teacher. Vega shuts her eyes again and focuses on her

breath. She relaxes and is nearly asleep when something lands on the floor next to her. Before she can open her eyes to see what is happening, something hits Vega on the head. She opens her eyes and turns her head just in time to see a flip-flop flying through the air. “What’s going on!” she wonders. Then things get very loud and very chaotic. Flip-flops, shoes and sandals fly through the air. Hairy creatures run around the room chattering and making an awful noise. It sounds as if they are laughing. The yoga teacher and several students are on their feet. They clap their hands loudly. “Shoo! Shoo! Go back outside, you cheeky monkeys!” the teacher cries. The students pick up the shoes on the floor and start banging them together. A couple of the monkeys take some fruit from the bowl in the corner of the room before running outside. Vega, Leo and their dad look around. They are very surprised.

The yoga students are laughing and waving at the monkeys. “Why isn’t everyone angry with the monkeys?” Leo asks. The yoga teacher replies. “It’s because we share our planet with them – and we have to show respect and love.” One of the older students turns to Vega and her family. “Welcome to India!” she says.
