Your biggest fan! Dear Abel AKA the Weeknd, I have been your loyal follower on Instagram for years. I couldn’t believe that you were having a competition to see who could write the best fan letter. When I saw that you were giving out five, free backstage tickets on your next tour, I didn’t even hesitate to start writing the best letter ever. I absolutely love your music! You have so many great songs that fit perfectly into every moment. I’m a dancer, and the music I dance to has to have feeling and great beats. I use your music all the time for improvisation, and to just get a really good feeling. I can listen to your songs whenever, like on my way to school, blasting in my room, or hanging out with my friends. The best thing is your variety of different moods in different songs. A lot of your lyrics also have real depth behind them. Sometimes I may not notice it at first, but after really listening to the song, I realize how deep the song really is. A lot of your songs are about love and heartbreak. I’m not going to lie to you, some of your songs are about things that I cannot relate to, but I still love the music. Most often I can relate to your lyrics, and the feeling I get from your songs inspires me and helps me sort out my life. It’s amazing!

But what I like the most is that you have some songs that are about other artists. For example, the song “Call out my name” is about Selena Gomez, or the album After Hours has a lot of memories from your and Bella Hadid’s relationship. The way that those songs are written makes me realize that even famous people have normal feelings and similar life problems. I think your parents’ roots in Ethiopia, and yours from Canada, have given you a special, unique view of the world. The way you started with music also really shows that if someone has talent, but no real connections, a person can still succeed. I think it was super smart that you anonymously started posting songs on YouTube in 2010, just like a normal person. Two years later, with a huge following, you’re a star. It must have been really hard to keep your identity hidden for so long! Those three mixtapes you uploaded are awesome! My

favorite is the Thursday mixtape. You have worked so hard to get where you are today. You have even been compared to amazing artists like Michael Jackson. You’re such a genuine person, and you’re not only a really good artist, but you are also an actor, songwriter, and a record producer. Those are some serious skills! I know that I am probably just one of the million people writing to you for the free tickets, but I am truly your number one fan! I’ll never be able to afford tickets to your show, so I would be beyond happy for such a gift! Much love, Kim

Sounds of Jamaica

Jamaica is a small island country in the Caribbean Sea. Despite its size, Jamaica has made itself known worldwide for many reasons. They have some of the best runners in the world! Dishes such as ackee and saltfish, or the Jamaican jerk sauce, are to die for! To top it off, the nature on and around the island is stunningly beautiful. A visit to Jamaica is not complete unless you take the chance to visit, and swim in the many waterfalls, and enjoy a day on one of the many beaches. However, Jamaica is known best for its music. Jamaica is known around the world as the home of the artist Bob Marley and reggae music. What many probably do not know, is that the people of this small island, with a population around 3 million, have created many different genres of music.

Team Metalheads Mrs. Allegra: Good morning class! As you know, today is the day! Your groups have all been assigned a genre of music to research. I know that many of you were not happy with the genre you received, but you are being graded on how well you present and sell your genre, not if you like it for real. You have had all week to prepare your arguments, which should be less than two minutes long. Each team will start by presenting their arguments, and then the class will be free to ask questions to challenge the presentation. Let’s begin with ... drumroll please ... Team Metalheads! Aria, Reed, and Melody come on up! Aria: ENERGY! You cannot find another genre of music that has so much energy. Whether you understand what they are saying or not, the music gets your blood flowing faster. Heavy Metal started in the UK in the late 1960s. In 1968, Black Sabbath – a band from Birmingham, England – brought this new sound to life. As it has its roots in rock music, they must have figured out what people wanted and made improvements to rock music. Reed: The music is loud. It fills the air with power and a feeling of strength. With the electric guitars and their sick distortion of sound playing for long solos, you can feel the emotion in the music more than many other types of music. Melody: You may not like the “headbangers” and their aggressive “moshing”, the dance where you slam into people, but this

helps people get rid of their stress and frustration. It is therefore a healthy way to deal with a stressful life. Aria: Metalheads are non-conformists. They do not follow the norms in society. The scary pictures of the devil and other things are a way to break away from being a follower ... they don’t want to be sheep. Reed: The rhythms are out of this world! Along with the screaming guitars, you have the heavy bass and drums to give it a full sound. Melody: In summary, heavy metal music is able to offer a sound and feeling that no other music can create. Too many of us follow whatever our friends like. Stop being a follower! Mrs. Allegra: Thank you Team Metalheads for your energetic presentation. Let’s open up for questions from your classmates. Shir: Aria, you said that you might not understand the lyrics. I think that the lyrics are very important. I don’t want to be dancing to a song that is being racist or sexist without knowing it. All I hear in heavy metal is screaming and lots of noise.

Aria:

I’ll be honest with your Shir, I felt the same before I looked into the music. You just have to be a little picky and know what the bands stand for. Most of the lyrics are pretty good. You can easily find them online. The screaming is easier to follow once you know the words. Harper: You say that they don’t want to be sheep, but isn’t that what they are doing by following the same patterns and music as all of the other metalheads? In what way are they not followers? Reed: Harper, it is pretty much impossible to be completely unique in this world. But, metalheads have the guts to stand up to the norms in society. In a herd of normal sheep, they are the black sheep. Viola: Don’t a lot of people damage their hearing because of the loud, screaming music? Melody: Come on Viola, people can damage their hearing by listening to any loud music or sounds. All you have to do is turn it down or wear ear plugs. Mrs. Allegra: Ok class, that’s enough questioning. We have a lot of groups to get through. Thank you very much Team Metalheads. Well done! Let’s give a warm welcome to our next group ... drumroll please ... Team Opera Singers.

1. What were the groups assigned to do? 2. What do you think it means to “present and sell your genre”? 3. What genre of music was the source of inspiration for heavy metal music? 4. What are non-conformists? 5. according to Shir, the message behind the song is important. Why? 6. What do you think reed meant by, “in a herd of normal sheep, they are the black sheep”?

Halftime show What is the greatest annual music show in the world? Ok, this is clearly subjective, but the number of people who watch this particular show elevates it to the top. It is watched in over 130 countries, and only in the USA (where the event takes place) 103 million people watched it on February 2, 2020. Could the amazing musical artists attract so much attention in one concert? Maybe, or maybe not. The fact is that the event is only the halftime show of a much larger event. The true show is the American football championship, the Super Bowl. Due to its popularity, artists dream of performing there, and they do it for free! Because of the huge amount of exposure the musical artists get from the 12–15-minute performance, they pull out all the bells and whistles to make it memorable. This performance

will most likely remain in your memory longer than any game, even though the actual football game is usually quite exciting. It is this extensive amount of attention they get that leads artists to willingly put on a free performance. Sales of the artists’ songs from the performances on February 2, 2020, surged over 1 000 % that day. One can easily say that this show is not a normal performance. The minutes are packed full of action, music, and visuals. The lighting, fireworks, special equipment, and other features drive the bill for such a performance to cost millions of dollars. The 2020 halftime show cost the National Football League (NFL) about 13 million dollars, which is almost a million dollars a minute!

For this show, two incredibly influential artists were the headliners. Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, known simply as Shakira, was one of the two. She was born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia, yet she has both Lebanese and Italian roots. Shakira means “grateful” in Arabic. Shakira recorded her first album in Colombia when she was only 13 years old. Ten years later, she made her first album in English, and this one sold over 13 million copies. Shakira has made a name for herself worldwide. She is a singer-songwriter, a record producer, and a dancer. She has even performed three times at the FIFA World Cup. The other headliner was Jennifer Lynn Lopez, better known as J. Lo. She is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents, although she was born in the Bronx, in New York City. At the age of 16, J. Lo made her acting debut in a film called “My Little Girl”. She then worked for a year as a dancer on a popular television show. After a few roles in television programs, J. Lo’s acting career began to take off, and she has starred in a long list of blockbuster films since then. In 1999, J. Lo decided to tackle the music industry as well. Her first single, “If You Had My Love” topped the Billboard Hot 100, which is an accomplishment that few can claim. The Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, was the location for the Super Bowl in 2020. Musical artist JayZ’s company, Roc Nation, was hired by the NFL to produce the halftime show. With Shakira and J. Lo as headliners, how could they go wrong? Surrounded by a troupe of dancers, Shakira kicked off the performance with an impressive song and dance. She appeared in a red, glittering dress, much like the dancers around her. Having previously been in a rock band, Shakira showed off her guitar skills in her second song. Before she was finished, she gave a belly dance performance, and switched to a more Latin vibe in her music.

J. Lo’s performance was no less impressive, although she focused more on dance, including a pole dance performance. Beginning in a black leather outfit, she later revealed a shimmering, silver bodysuit underneath as she began her pole dance scene. J. Lo’s 11-year-old daughter, Emme, was also included in the show. She, and many other young girls, appeared on stage in glowing cage-like props, singing one of her mother’s songs. J. Lo and Shakira then joined the girls, Shakira on the drums and J. Lo singing. J. Lo made quite an entrance wearing a large feather American flag coat, which reversed into a giant Puerto Rican flag.

To tie it all together, the duo had a final song and dance performance mix of J. Lo’s song “Let’s Get Loud”, and Shakira’s song “Waka Waka” (“This Time for Africa”). The unforgettable display of silver, white, and gold colors, with dancers being thrown in the air, was concluded with Shakira and J. Lo shimmying to the music. An impressive fireworks display filled the sky as a finale. In the last five years, headliners such as Maroon 5, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Coldplay, and Katy Perry, have dazzled the world in their Super Bowl halftime show performances. However, the 2020 year’s performance, with the co-headlining duo, raised the bar for any future performers.
