The American

Alligator Alligators, and their relatives crocodiles, have lived on Earth for a much longer period of time than many other animals. Alligators have been around for millions of years. They look like giant lizards. Alligators have wide heads, very strong jaws, and skin like armor. They live in the southern United States and in China. In Florida, USA, many people go to the Everglades National Park for tours on airboats. It is very popular, as you are able to see alligators in the wild. Most adult alligators are between 2.5 and 3.5 meters long. They can weigh over 450 kilograms, and can run about 18 kilometers per hour, but only for a short time. Alligators can stay under water for up to eight hours if the water is cold enough. When they are hungry, they hide in the water and wait for an animal to come. Alligators only eat about once a week. Alligators have an extremely strong bite, but they do not have very strong muscles to open their jaws. Adults could probably hold an alligator’s mouth shut, but they probably should not try. 8

Whale Safari in Canada

We are on a boat in Quebec, Canada, and this is my first whale watching tour. There are different kinds of whales that you can find in Quebec: belugas, minkes, humpbacks, fin whales, and if you are lucky, blue whales. It looks like today is my lucky day! The blue whale is 50 meters in front of us. The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth, and here it is. Everyone on the boat cheers. Then, the whale disappears into the deep blue water. Will it come up again? All of a sudden we see the whale coming toward us. It is only a few meters away from our boat now. I am not sure whether to be afraid or excited! A strange silence spreads over the boat. The whale is coming up again. The giant is rolling onto its back. It looks like it will hit us! It is diving under the boat, close enough for me to touch its tail as it passes right in front of me. I guess the whale is just playing with us or showing off. If it makes one mistake, our whole boat will turn over. It is scary and amazing at the same time! I wonder if it is coming back again? This is an adventure that none of us on that boat will ever forget! 10

Australian

Wildlife Millions of years ago, Australia drifted away from the other continents on Earth. Due to this the animals evolved in different ways from other wildlife, which is why Australian animals are so unique. Here are some short facts about some of them. Echidna An echidna is a spiny anteater with sharp claws and a beak. It digs into the ground, and uses its tongue to catch the ants. The echidna lives in Australia and also in Tasmania. Emu An emu is a bird that can grow up to two meters tall and weigh approximately 40 kg. The emu cannot fly. The emu is the second largest bird in the world, and it is the national bird of Australia. Dingo A dingo is a wild dog. People believe that the dingo’s bark is more like the howl of a wolf. Most dingoes have a ginger color, but some dingoes are also black or white. Kangaroo A kangaroo has a long tail, large back feet, and small hands. Females carry their babies in their pouch. A baby kangaroo is called a joey. A kangaroo can be up to 2.5 meters tall. The big tail helps them keep balanced. Koala The koala has large, sharp claws, so it can climb the trees, and even sleep up there. Koala mothers carry their babies in their pouch for six months. For the next six months, the babies hang on their mother outside the pouch, before they are big enough to be on their own. 12

Platypus A platypus is a unique looking animal. It has a beak, webbed ducklike feet, a tail like a beaver, and a furry body like an otter. The male platypus is venomous. It swims and hunts under water. Tasmanian Devil The Tasmanian Devil lives in Tasmania, the island just south of Australia. It is black, as big as a small dog, quite aggressive, and it is very loud. Wallaby A wallaby is a smaller kind of kangaroo that is less than a meter tall. When their babies are born, they are blind and deaf, and they weigh less than a gram. They live in their mother’s pouch for a year. Wombat As great diggers with sharp claws, wombats live in holes and tunnels that they dig underground. Their tunnels can be up to 20 meters long, and deep underground. They are active during the night and sleep during the day.

1. Which animal (or animals)‌ a) is a smaller kind of kangaroo? b) uses its tongue to catch ants? c) sleeps in the trees? d) howls like a wolf? e) uses its tail to keep balanced? f) is a bird that cannot fly? g) has a venomous male? h) has a beak? i) lives on an island south of Australia? j) digs tunnels? k) has a pouch? 2. Why do you think the wombats sleep during the day instead of the night? 3. Which animal do you think is the most dangerous for humans? Why? 4. Why are many Australian animals so different from the ones on other continents?

1. Pick three animals from the text, and compare them to three animals in your country. Describe a few ways they are similar. 2. Imagine that you are one of the animals in the text. Write a short story about a day when something exciting happened.

1. Pick one of the animals. Find five more facts about it. 2. Find three differences between a wallaby and a kangaroo. 3. If the emu is the second largest bird in the world, which is the largest? Find three differences between the two birds. 4. Find out where Tasmania is located, and find five facts about the island.

On Safari in

South Africa Kudu

This is the story of a first safari experience in South Africa. Would you dare to join such an adventure? After sleeping a night under a mosquito net in a lodge in Kruger National Park, we got up before dawn. It was dark, but our path was glowing with lanterns, and the sky was covered with stars. The park is enormous, so we were not going to have time to see it all. We met our guides, a park ranger, and a tracker who helps find the animals. As it is so hot during the days, they told us that the early morning is the best time for a safari. I was so excited and nervous at the same time, as this was my first safari. We got in the jeep and we were on our way! The sun came up as we arrived at a water hole. There we saw a herd of elephants, a herd of zebras, and a kudu on its own. Some animals were drinking the water, and some elephants seemed to be playing in the water.

Later, we spotted a pride of lions feasting on a dead wildebeest after a successful hunt. Not far away, we could see the vultures waiting in the trees to feast on whatever was left after the lions had their share. A little past the vultures, we saw a cackle of hyenas circling. They also feast on whatever the lions leave behind. Further into the park, our tracker found three black rhinos. There are not many of these rhinos left in the park, so this was a rare sight. They seemed quite peaceful to me, but we had to keep still and quiet when they were close. We would not want them to charge at us! After a long time, they turned and walked away, and we headed back for breakfast. I hope I get lucky over these next few days of safari! I really hope to see hippos and giraffes before I go! They are my favorite animals! We are going out again when the sun sets this evening. I can’t wait!

1. Why won’t they have time to see all of Kruger National Park? 2. What is the tracker’s job? 3. What do they see at the water hole? 4. After leaving the water hole, what other animals do they see on the safari? 5. What do you call a group of elephants or zebras? 6. Why do you think the morning is the best time for a safari? 7. Why was it so special to see black rhinos? 8. The hyenas and vultures are waiting for the leftovers from the lions’ feast. Why do you think they wait for leftovers?

A pride of lions feeding after the hunt.

A hippopotamus, or hippo, is one of the most dangerous animals in the world.

1. If you could go on a safari in Kruger National Park, which animals would you hope to see? Which would be your top three favorites? Why? 2. Continue the story about the evening safari experience.

1. Find out what other animals there are in Kruger National Park. 2. Choose an animal that lives in Kruger National Park. Find five facts about it. 3. Many animals, such as the black rhino, are close to extinction. Find out some reasons why.
