west of the apennine mountains.

why are we stopped? we’re supposed to be heading to greece.
a tempest blocks our route. hazel communed with our father.
“he
sent arion to carry her into the eye of
the storm.”
. . . hello? is anyone here?
I’m on a quest with my friends. we have to stop the earth goddess gaea from awakening and destroying everything. I think my father wanted me to come here.
hazel levesque, daughter of pluto.

I am hecate. goddess of magic.
we have much to discuss, if you’re to live through the night.
you remind me of your mother.
“marie levesque was a fortune-teller. she dealt in charms and curses and gris-gris.”
“she searched for a spell to summon the god pluto, and I helped her find it.

“pluto fell in love with your mother, and because of one greedy wish . . .
your life wouldn’t have happened without me. magic is neither good nor evil. it is a tool.
so save your anger. if your father did cause our paths to cross, it’s because without my help, you will die.
. . . you were born with a curse. you can summon riches from the earth, but anyone who uses them will suffer and die.
. . . the roman legion of your beloved camp jupiter wars with the greek demigods of camp halfblood. none surive.
your ship, the argo ii, falls from the sky. a hulking ruin. it never reaches your destination.
my mother suffered because of that evil magic. because of you, my whole life
your friends percy jackson and annabeth chase are trapped in tartarus for an eternity of torture. they never escape through the doors of death.
choices. you stand at the crossroads, hazel levesque. and I am the goddess of crossroads.
crossroads are places of decision. there are always three ways to go . . . four if you count going backward.

then you have only one path, though it is the most dangerous.
which is why gaea will not expect you to travel that route.
I can obscure your progress somewhat, but the success of your journey will depend on you, hazel levesque.
you must learn to use the mist. use the mist? how?
which path do you choose?
none of these.
there is a secret pass in the north, a place where I hold sway, where hannibal once crossed when he marched against rome.
I am also the goddess of the mist, the magical veil that separates the world of the gods from the world of mortals.
as a child of pluto who has returned from the dead, you understand the veil between worlds better than most.
when you reach the house of hades, you will meet a formidable enemy. you alone can defeat her, and it will require magic.
I told you, we have to stop gaea.
once through, you can sail the adriatic to your goal—the house of hades, in epirus.
but . . . that’s so far out of the way.
I will assist you, if you prove yourself worthy.
will you trust me . . . or will you shun me because you fear magic, like those who shunned your mother?
I’ll go north. we’ll take your secret pass.

we’ll keep our ship together.
prepare yourself, daughter of pluto. if you succeed against the enemy that awaits you, we will meet again.
I’ll succeed. and I won’t choose one of your paths. I’m making my own. we’re going to do it all. we’re going to find a way to stop gaea from waking.
most important of all . . .
we’ll stop camp jupiter and camp half-blood from going to war.
“.
. . we’re going to rescue percy and annabeth from tartArus.”

I can’t stop us from falling.
I can’t even slow us down.
I love you— –percy! look! water!
. . . water?

poseidon— dad!—if you can hear me . . .
. . . give me the strength!
despair.

percy! the river is messing with your mind!

everything is pointless.

what’s the use in struggling?

it’s the cocytus— the river of lamentation! it’s made of pure misery!

life is despair.
don’t give up! tell me about new rome!
new
for us
you said we could have a future there! tell me!
architecture . . . thought you’d like the houses . . . and we could go to coLLege. what would you study?
surfing . . . . . .what if I major in surfing? ha-ha! welcome back, seaweed brain.

is it a bad time to mention I’m freezing from that filthy water? leave it to me to freeze to death in literal hell.
ow.
this sand . . . it’s chips of glass. this whole place is designed to hurt and kill.
I lost my backpack when we fell. and my dagger.
we have no food, no water, no supplies of any kind.
I guess we’ve been in worse spots. or not. tell me you have a brilliant plan.
and my ankle is {hnn} still broken.
annabeth? this is the part where you tell me your brilliant plan.
it’s a plan. don’t know how brilliant it is. come on. help me walk. where are we going? toward the glow coming up from beyond that cliff.

“we need to find the river of fire.”

the phlegethon. this river flows from hades’s realm down into tartarus. some legends call it the river of healing.
it keeps the wicked in one piece, so they can endure more torture. kind of like the underworld equivalent of ambrosia and nectar.
phlegethon? sounds like a marathon for hawking spitballs.
what now?
it’s fire. how can we— like this!
we have to drink.
{aggl!}
percy, you’ve got to drink.

percy . . . my ankle doesn’t hurt anymore.
the water . . . it worked.
I can’t believe we’re really in tartarus. I thought it would be, like, empty space. a pit with no bottom.

we haven’t seen all of it. this could be just a tiny part. like the front steps.
spicy, yet disgusting.
yeah. that pretty much sums it up.
the doors of death. that has to be our only way out. I told nico to take the argo ii to epirus and meet us on the mortal side.
we don’t know how to find them. we don’t even know how long it’ll take to get there. plus gaea’s strongest monsters will be guarding them . . . and how are we supposed to synchronize a meeting with our friends, if we don’t know when they’ll be waiting on the other side?
though . . . if the river comes from the upper levels of tartarus, it must flow downstream to the deeper parts.
we have to find a way to close the doors on both sides, or the monsters will just keep coming through. gaea’s forces will overrun the world.
so maybe if we—
arachne.
she . . . she would’ve killed me.

she died too easy, considering how much torture she put you through.

but you killed her so fast . . . without even thinking about it. she deserved worse.

you were saying something about downstream? if it leads to more dangerous territory, it’s probably where the doors are.
let’s stop wasting time.
