Playing Guitar

My name is Tobias and I lead a pretty normal life. After school, I do my homework and play video games. Sometimes I play football. Sometimes I hang out with my friend Kevin. And I play the guitar. I take a class every Wednesday night. I can only play a few chords right now, but it’s cool.

Dad says music is a good way to make new friends. Kevin says that every girl likes a guy who plays the guitar. We’ll see about that.

Café Cinnamon

One Wednesday after my guitar class, I missed the bus. It was raining and windy. I was freezing, and it was twenty minutes until the next bus. Near the bus stop was a café called Café Cinnamon. It looked warm and cozy inside. I could have a cup of coffee while waiting, I thought.

I went into the café. It smelled of coffee and freshly baked cinnamon rolls. Then I checked my pocket. I had my bus pass, but not my debit card. I just had a twenty-kronor bill and a few coins. I added it up … twenty-eight kronor. That wasn’t even enough for a latte. Typical!

Broke

I was standing at the counter, looking at all the rolls, cookies and sandwiches. – Hi, said the guy behind the counter. What can I get for you? – Hm … I’m thinking, I said. – Okay, he said. A latte cost thirty kronor, and a roll cost thirty-five. Why did I leave my debit card at home today of all days?

– You play guitar? asked the guy behind the counter. He nodded toward my guitar case. – Yep, I said. – Do you take classes over there, then? He nodded toward the window. You could see the building where my class was held. – Exactly, I said. – I did, too, he said. A couple of years ago. Now I’m in a band. But that hasn’t exactly made me rich, so I have a side job here. – Oh, I said.

The guy’s name was Leo. It was written on his shirt: Café Cinnamon, Leo. – Maybe this is a stupid question, I said. But can I have … half a latte? – Broke? Leo said. I took out my money and showed him. He laughed. – It’s on special tonight. For guitarists, at least. One latte it is. – Thanks, that’s cool of you, I said, putting my money on the counter.
