What’s out there? Here’s an interview from the youth magazine Smart Smart Kids Kids with with Professor Professor Harris. magazine Harris. Q = Question A = Answer (Professor Harris) Q How did it all start? A I think that everything – I mean all the stars and planets – were once packed together in a small lump. Then there was this Big Bang, a big explosion. This was about 15 billion years ago. Q What is the Milky Way? A It’s the galaxy where we live. The Sun is one of the stars in this galaxy, and the Earth is the planet where we live. Q How many stars are there? A Well, we think there are about 1,000 billion stars in the Milky Way. In all the galaxies together there are many, many more – you can’t count them all. Q What is a star? A A star, like the Sun, is made of gases. It’s a bit like the air around us. The great thing about stars is that they make heat and light. Q Why do stars twinkle? A Stars don’t really twinkle. They only twinkle when we look at them from the Earth. You see, it’s the air around the Earth that makes them twinkle. From a spaceship they would not twinkle at all because there is no air out there. Q What is a planet? A The Earth is a planet. Planets are a lot smaller than stars. And they’re not hot, they can’t make their own light. Look at the ground and you can see no light coming out of it. Planets circle around a star, just like the Earth circles around the Sun.

k Do you thin ut o there is life there?

Q What is a black hole? A A black hole is what’s left when a huge star dies. Stars are born, they live and they die – but only after a very long time, of course. When big stars die they collapse and become a massive lump. No light can get out from the lump. That’s why they’re called black holes. Q How hot is the Sun? A Oh, it’s really hot. In the middle it’s about 15 million °C. The outside is quite cool – only about 6,000 °C! Q Will the Sun die too? A Yes, it will. Like all stars. But don’t worry, it won’t happen for a very long time, not in your lifetime. We think that the Sun will go on shining for another 5 billion years. And it’s about 5 billion years old so the Sun is only in the middle of its lifetime.

Di d you get i t? Find the mistakes and correct them. 1 The Big Bang happened about 15,000 years ago. 2 In all the galaxies there aren’t many stars – it’s easy to count them all. 3 The Earth, like all stars, is made up of gases. 4 It’s the Sun that makes the stars twinkle. 5 Stars always circle around a planet. 6 The Sun is really hot. In the centre it’s about 150 million °C.

Talk about it • Which fact did you find most surprising? • Are there other planets like the Earth in the universe? • Where does the universe end? Does it end? W H AT ’ S O U T   T H E R E ? •

t was July 16th 1969 at Cape Canaveral in Florida, USA. Three men – Neil Armstrong, Buzz (Edwin) Aldrin and Michael Collins – got into their rocket Apollo 11. The journey to the Moon and back again would take eight days. It was a dangerous mission. They had trained for it for years. The start at Cape Kennedy was extremely risky. Big engines pushed the rocket into space and there was lots of hot smoke all around. Three days later, on July 19th 1969, they arrived at the Moon. Landing was difficult. They used a small module for this. The main rocket kept travelling around the Moon. The astronauts thought the thick dust on the Moon would make it impossible for them to see anything. They also thought that the rocket would sink into the dust on the ground and get stuck. Everything went fine, though, and they landed safely. Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the Moon, on July 20th 1969. Buzz Aldrin was next but Michael Collins had to stay in the module. Millions of people on Earth watched on TV as the men walked on the Moon! President Nixon phoned them from the White House.

Armstrong put the American flag on the surface of the Moon. Together with Aldrin he collected some rocks and sand to bring back to Earth. They also took lots of photographs and left equipment on the surface to do experiments. The lift-off from the Moon was also very risky. If the engines hadn’t worked, the astronauts could have been left on the Moon forever. Docking with the spaceship was the most difficult part of the whole trip. And then they had to get back into the Earth’s atmosphere in exactly the right way – if they didn’t the rocket would burn up. When they returned to Earth, their capsule landed in the Pacific Ocean. The three astronauts had finished one of the most important journeys in history. Two human beings had walked on the Moon – and come back alive. It was a short walk on the Moon, but as Neil Armstrong said: ‘That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.’
