ow would you describe your fashion sense? Are you a punk with piercings? A Goth with lots of long black clothes? Grunge? Or are you a square who happily lets your parents buy your clothes? The way people dress is how they show both their individuality and their membership of a group. And however strange you may or may not look, believe me, there are some much weirder styles out there.

New Zealand People all over the world get tattooed. Usually it is a hidden butterfly on the ankle or a Chinese symbol on the arm. Sometimes people like to cover their whole body with them. However the face is usually left empty of tattoos as they could make it difficult to get a job. Not for the Maoris in New Zealand. They considered the head as the most sacred place on the body. Starting from puberty boys’ faces were often tattooed to show their family, their history and their ranking in the tribe. The more tattoos a man had on his face the more important he was. Traditionally a man with no tattoos was of no importance. Girls were also tattooed but only around the mouth and nose. Some Maoris continue this tradition today altough it has declined in popularity.

Myanmar The Padaung tribe in the jungles in Myanmar considers the neck the most attractive part of the woman’s body. They also think that the longer the neck the more attractive it is. At the age of five, females have their first neck ring. As they grow up more rings are added. These are to stretch the neck so that it becomes as long as possible. A fully-grown woman will have about twenty rings, making their neck about thirty centimetres long. The rings show not only how sexy the woman is but also how rich her family is. Unfortunately, the rings are very difficult to remove because the neck can’t support the weight of the head. They also have to drink through a straw as tipping their heads back to drink makes them fall over!

Clothes A Comprehension After reading the text make a summary of it by completing the statements in the best possible way. 1. The way people dress … 2. But there are … 3. In Myanmar the women … 4. At the age of five … 5. As they grow … 6. A fully-grown woman … 7. Unfortunately the rings … 8. They also have to drink … 9. All over the world … 10. Usually the tattoos … 11. But the Maoris … 12. The more tattoos a man … 13. Girls also had … 14. Some Maoris still …

B Word formation Fill in the blanks with a word related to the marked word. Use a dictionary if you need to. 1. I’m interested in …, but it costs a fortune to wear fashionable clothes.

2. I … Arsenal. Yes, I’m a very faithful supporter of Arsenal. 3. My sister is worried about her …. She wants to weigh less, but I think she’s just perfect.

Clothes 4. It’s of great … to learn lots of words. A working vocabulary is so important. 5. How … they look. Street children often live in total misery. 6. How … Susan looked! After the marriage her face was absolutely glowing with happiness. 7. Leaving food on the garden table looks very … to flies. It will most certainly attract insects. 8. She thought her life was so … It was filled with emptiness. 9. Do you … I’m crazy? But I had a funny thought the other day that a UFO would pick me up after school. 10. How … is your room from the door to the window? The length of my room is 22 feet.

C Writing tasks 1. Following trends. How important is it for you to wear the latest fashion or have the coolest cell phone or electronic gadget? What’s the price you’re willing to pay to be trendy? Argue for or against following trends. 2. I’d like to become a fashion model. Write about your dream and what you have to do to make it come true. 3. Tomorrow’s trends. What do you think we can expect in the future when it comes to fashion? Use your imagination and come up with something fresh and new that might make you a rich girl/boy in the future. 4. My wardrobe. Write a short text where you present your favourite clothes. Give reasons why you think they tell people what kind of person you are.

D Research Find out what the “Typical trends” of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and the 90s were. Ask your parents and grandparents about what fashion was like when they grew up. What did they wear? What did they like/dislike? tough stuff a
