The messages had started coming about a month ago, not long after the school holidays. Her phone was new and she had loved it, but not any more. Now she hated it. It had once given her freedom and independence, but now she jumped whenever it beeped and she was afraid to open her messages. Going out with Simon had started all the problems. He had gone out with her best friend, Rachel, for the whole of last year and they split up before the summer. When it ended, Rachel was in a terrible state and was always at Emma’s house talking and crying. Then Emma had started seeing Simon. She hadn’t planned it. It’s just the way it worked out, and Emma just couldn’t bring herself to tell Rachel. How could she? And after a while it was simply too late. Then Rachel found out and now the girls in the class were against her. Sometimes she would get texts from Rachel’s phone direct. They would say: ‘You were my best friend. I trusted you. I hate you’. In a way, this was something she could cope with. She felt guilty already, but she knew Rachel would not hurt her. It was the new text attacks she couldn’t understand. They showed no numbers or names. They came every day. And they were getting worse. What do you want? Emma finally decided to call Rachel. ‘What do you want?’ snapped Rachel. ‘Rachel, please listen. You know how sorry I am about Simon. Look, he and I have finished anyway … ’ but Rachel interrupted: ‘Yeah, I heard. I don’t care. Leave me alone.’ ‘But you have to stop the others from sending me these texts. They’re awful.’ ‘What texts?’ ‘You know very well what texts. The threats. The warnings.’ ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about.’ ‘Yes you do. I can tell from the way everyone behaves towards me in the class.’ ‘True, some of the girls think you were out of order. And so do I. But I can tell you now. No one is texting you. To be honest, they don’t think you’re worth the effort.’

We agree that it is a pretty low thing for your friend’s girlfriend to do. But you have to be careful in this situation. If you tell your friend he may blame you for this even if that’s unfair. If your friendship is a good one, tell him the truth. But if you’re not sure how he will take the news, help him instead to focus on the problems that he is aware of in his relationship. Chances are, there’s no smoke without fire. Maybe he’s been having doubts about his girlfriend anyway. Ask him to be honest with himself. Perhaps she’s not right for him. And help him to realize that he deserves better than this creep!

Maybe your feelings for her weren’t as strong as you thought! Maybe she is just an ex-boyfriend’s sister! If this is the case, tell her that although you think that she is a cool person, you feel that it isn’t enough for your friendship to go on. You need to move on and see all your other friends. Also, if you’re uncomfortable around her because you’re not really over the break-up, and seeing her just reminds you of her brother, then hanging out with her can be pretty tough. Ask her to give you time to get over the break-up. That is what friends are for.

Annie leaned against her locker and sighed. What a day! What a disaster! This school year wasn’t starting out the way she had planned it at all. Of course, Annie hadn’t planned on that new girl, Kristen. And she definitely hadn’t planned that the new girl would wear the exact skirt Annie was going to wear. It wasn’t just any skirt. Annie had baby-sat three hyper-active brothers all summer to buy that skirt and the designer top to go with it. When she first saw them in a magazine, Annie knew they were just right for her. She had gone to the phone right away and called the toll-free number for the nearest outlet. With price and picture in hand, she had set off to convince her mother. ‘It’s great, hon,’ her mother agreed. ‘I just can’t see spending as much on one outfit as I do for all your clothes.’ Annie wasn’t surprised, but she was disappointed. ‘Well, if it’s that important, we could just ask the store to put it aside and pay a little towards it each month,’ her mom said. ‘You’d have to pay for it, though.’ So she did. Every Friday, Annie took all her babysitting money and made payments. She had made her final payment just last week and hurried home to try on the skirt and top. The moment of truth had arrived and she was afraid to look! She stood in front of the mirror with her eyes shut. She counted to three and forced herself to open them. It was perfect. From the side, from the back and even from the front, it was perfect. She walked, she sat and she turned. She imagined her friends saying how great she looked, and how she would answer so they wouldn’t think she was stuck up. The next day, Annie and her mother gave her bedroom a good going-over. They washed and ironed the bedspread and curtains, and vacuumed behind and under everything. Then they sorted through the closets and drawers for clothes to give away. Annie hated having to sort it all out and fold them into boxes. They dropped

it all off at Goodwill, then headed to her grandmother’s for the weekend. When they got home Sunday night, Annie ran straight to her bedroom. Everything had to be just right for her grand entrance at school the next day. She flung open her closet and pulled out her top and her … and her … skirt? It wasn’t there. It must be here! But it wasn’t. ‘Dad! Mom!’ Annie’s search became frantic. Her parents rushed in. Hangers and clothes were flying everywhere. ‘My skirt! It isn’t here!’ Annie stood with her top in one hand and an empty hanger in the other. ‘Now, Annie,’ her dad said, trying to calm her, ‘it didn’t just get up and walk away. We’ll find it.’ But they didn’t. For two hours they searched through closets, drawers, the laundry room, under the bed and even in the bed. It just wasn’t there. Annie sank into bed that night, trying to figure it out. When she woke up the next morning, she felt tired and dull. She picked out something – anything – to wear. Nothing was good enough. How could it be? 60 It was at her school locker that the puzzle became, well, more puzzling. ‘You’re Annie, right?’ a voice said from behind her. Annie turned. Shock waves hit her. That’s my skirt. That’s my skirt! That’s my skirt? 65 ‘I’m Kristen. The principal gave me the locker next to yours. She thought since we live on the same block and I’m new here, you could show me around.’ She didn’t seem sure of herself, so she went quiet. Annie just stared. How … ? 70 Where … ? Is that my … ? Kristen seemed uneasy. ‘You don’t have to. I told her we didn’t really know each other. We’ve only passed each other on the sidewalk.’ That was true. Annie and Kristen had passed 75 each other, Annie to and from her baby-sitting job and Kristen in her fast-food uniform that smelled of onions and grease at the end of the day. Annie tried to focus on what Kristen was 80 asking. ‘Sure. I’ll be happy to show you around,’ Annie said, not happy at all. And now Annie was waiting to walk Kristen home, hoping to sort this out. They chatted all the way to Annie’s house before she found the courage to ask the big question. ‘Where did you get your skirt, Kristen?’ ‘Isn’t it beautiful? My mom and I saw it in a magazine while we were waiting for my grandma at the doctor’s office.’ ‘Oh, your mom bought it for you.’ ‘Well, no.’ Kristen lowered her voice. ‘We’ve had kind of a hard time lately. Dad lost his job, and my grandma was sick. We moved here to take care of her while my dad looked for work.’ All that went right over Annie’s head. ‘You must have saved most of your paycheck then.’ Kristen blushed. ‘I saved all my money and gave it to my mom to buy school clothes for my brother and sister.’ Annie couldn’t stand it. ‘Where did you get your skirt?’ Kristen stammered, ‘My mother found it at Goodwill in a box that had been handed in just as she got there. Mom opened it, and there was the skirt from the magazine, brand new, with the tags still on it!’ Kristen looked up. Goodwill? Brand new? Everything suddenly made sense. Kristen smiled, and her face glowed. ‘My mother knew it was meant for me. She knew it was a blessing.’ ‘Kristen, I …’ Annie stopped. This wasn’t going to be easy. ’Kristen,’ Annie tried again, ‘can I tell you something?’ ‘Sure. Anything.’ ‘Kristen.’ Annie took a deep breath. She hesitated for a moment. Then she smiled and said, ‘Do you have a minute to come up to my room? I think I have a top that would go great with your skirt.’

1 Annie had to work a whole summer in a shop to buy the clothes. 2 Annie’s mum promised she would pay half the price of the clothes. 3 When Annie got back home from her grandmother she found the skirt in her closet. 4 Kristen told Annie that she had first seen the skirt in a clothes shop. 5 When Kristen found the skirt in the box at Goodwill it was dirty and worn. 6 Finally Annie asked Kristen to get the skirt back.

Queen is a classic English rock group who played together from 1973 till 1991. The group members were Freddie Mercury (vocals), John Deacon (bass guitar), Brian May (guitar, vocals) and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals). All members wrote songs and lyrics for the band. In the 80s Queen became one of the very best live bands with songs like We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions. In 1991 the singer Freddie Mercury died and the band stopped playing for 14 years. In 2005 they started touring again with a new lead singer, Paul Rogers.
