English from the Beginning Welcome to English from the Beginning 4 English from the Beginning 4 innehåller övningar där du tränar dig att läsa, skriva, tala och lyssna.

In the past In this chapter you will:

•  Read and write about memories from the past. •  Work with verbs in the past tense. •  Write and talk about how a good friend should be. •  Work with adjectives and synonyms. •  Write explanations in English to words you’ve learnt. •  Read about two famous Americans. •  Write a presentation about a famous person from the past.

Starter

Words

1. What are your memories from the past? Read what these young people remember from their childhood.

Words I remember clearly my first day at school. I was six years old and my backpack was way too big for me. It was green with a big, blue butterfly on and I totally loved it. My mum took a picture of me on my way to school and it still hangs in my room. (Patrick, 15 years old, London) When I was seven the war began in my country and we had to flee. My sister was just two and my dad had to carry her. We couldn’t bring a lot from our house, but I brought my cuddly toy, a rabbit called Hiwa. Now I live in a new country, but I still have Hiwa. (Bahar, 16 years old, Toronto)

To be honest, I don’t remember much from my childhood. I have a very poor memory. What I do remember is getting my dog Bobo when I turned ten. I had wanted a dog forever and everything I wrote on my wish list every birthday and Christmas was a dog. Bobo is a poodle, but he’s a big one, not the small version. He’s seven years old now and definitely the best birthday present I’ve ever had. (Susan, 17 years old, Dublin)

She shows him a photo album and they start talking about her life. Ty: Is this really you, Granny? You look so young and absolutely beautiful. Mary: I was young then. This picture was taken in 1952. I was born in 1936, which means I was just sixteen years old. Ty: You look older than sixteen! Who’s the girl next to you? Mary: That’s Wilma. She was my neighbour and my best friend. We went to school together. Ty: Do you still keep in touch? Words Mary: We did for a long time, but we haven’t met for a few years now. Mary: I worked at a grocery store before I was married and continued to do so after that, even when I had my children, your father and uncle. It wasn’t very common, most women stayed at home, but I loved my job. My sister helped with the children. Ty: When did you buy the house? Mary: That was a few years later, in 1968, when your father was eight. Ty: I’ve always loved this house. Mary: So have I. It’s a beautiful house and the garden has always been my favourite place. I’m really interested in gardening, as you know. Ty: I like it too. Let’s go out there now.

More about Mary and Wilma 1. Mary and Wilma were best friends. Read the text about their lives together. I was born in 1936, just three years before the Second World War. When I was three, my father became a soldier and fought for his country. My sister Hope was born in the middle of the war in 1941, and my parents picked her name because they really needed hope for a better future. My mother took my sister and me to our grandparents in the country during the war, but we moved back to Birmingham in 1945, when my father came back. I was nine years old then and I remember how happy I was to see him. Afterwards I thought a lot about what happened to him during the war, but I never asked and he never talked about it. My best friend Wilma and I had a lot of fun. We went to school together and I really loved studying. I wanted to become a teacher, but there was no money for me to go to university. I started working in a grocery store instead and it was a good job too. I loved talking to the customers Words and took pride in my work. I was born ............................. Jag föddes

Wilma and I loved to go on trips with our bikes. Once we took our bikes on the train and went down south. We cycled around Cornwall and stayed at cheap B&B:s. We were just sixteen years old and I’m not sure I would have let my children go on a trip like that at that age, but my parents knew I could take care of myself. Wilma and I stayed good friends even after I got married and had my kids. Wilma never married, but she had a daughter. Raising a child as a single mum was even harder in the 60’s. I always thought she was brave to keep her daughter Brenda. They moved into a small flat just around the corner from my husband and me.

Two famous Americans Amelia Earhart 1. Read the text about a famous American aviator. Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897, in Kansas, USA. In the early 1920’s she started to take flying lessons and she really loved flying. Amelia Earhart was the first female aviator to cross the Atlantic Ocean by herself. The trip took 20 hours and 40 minutes. She was also the first female to do a solo flight across North America and back. Later, she participated in flying contests and became very famous. She also wrote books about her flights and her life as an aviator. She wanted more women to become pilots and share her love for flying. In 1937 Amelia Earhart started a trip around the world. The plane she flew with was called Lockheed Electra 10E. She flew a long way, but somewhere between New Guinea and California she disappeared. Her plane probably went down in the Pacific Ocean and president Franklin D. Roosevelt sent out nine ships and 60 planes to look for it, but it was never found, neither was her body.

Jesse Owens 4. Read the text about a famous American athlete. Jesse Cleveland Owens was born in Alabama, USA, in 1913. He was the youngest of 10 children. Since his father was unemployed a lot, Jesse had to work even as a child. When his father got a proper job, Jesse was able to attend The State University of Ohio. He didn’t get any scholarship though, so he had to work part-time. Jesse Owens won a lot of competitions as an athlete. He competed in track and field. When he travelled with his teammates, he had to eat in ”blacks-only” restaurants and stay at ”blacks-only” hotels, as were the rules in the USA at that time. In 1935 Jesse Owens jumped 8.13, which was a new world record. The record lasted for 25 years. In 1936, Berlin hosted the Olympic Summer Games. Adolf Hitler was the leader in Germany and he was not very happy when Jesse Owens won four track and field gold medals. Owens was a great sprinter and won both 100 metres, 200 metres and the 4x100 metre relay. He was also the long jump champion. Jesse Owens died in 1980 from lung cancer. He smoked one pack of cigarettes every day for 35 years.
