s l a m i n A 1. Reading 1 Vertebrates

Birds

Do you have a long bone running down your back? Yes, of course you do. It’s called a backbone, and we all have one. Animals that have a backbone are called vertebrates.

Birds lay eggs, but they aren’t cold-blooded. They have feathers to keep them warm. Feathers also help birds to fly. However, not all birds can fly; chickens and hens for instance can’t fly, at least not very far. Ostriches can’t fly, either, as they are very heavy – though they can run very fast. Penguins are birds, too, but they can neither fly nor run very fast. But they’re very good at swimming.

There are five different kinds of vertebrates.

Mammals Mammals are warm-blooded animals. That means they feel the cold, and so they usually have fur or hair on their bodies. Mammals produce milk for their babies. Dogs and cats are mammals, and so are elephants, kangaroos, and mice. Your English teacher is also a mammal, and so are you.

Reptiles Reptiles are cold-blooded, which means they can’t control the temperature of their bodies, so they don’t normally live in cold parts of the world. Snakes, lizards and crocodiles are all reptiles. Reptiles don’t produce milk, but they lay eggs. Hens lay eggs too, but they aren’t reptiles.

Fish Fish are cold-blooded, but they lay eggs. Some fish, like cod and tuna and sharks, live in the sea, but others live in fresh water, in rivers and lakes. Whales and dolphins live in the sea, but, funnily enough, they aren’t fish: they’re mammals.

Amphibians These animals have the best of both worlds as they can live on land or in the water. But it has to be fresh water. Amphibians are cold-blooded, and the females lay eggs. Frogs and toads are examples of amphibians.

Reading 2 An argument A number of animals are arguing about which is the best animal.

Doggy: Well, I’m man’s best friend. I’m the best animal in the world. Everyone loves us dogs. Catty: Well, I don’t! Dogs make too much noise. We cats are much more intelligent.

Doggy: Well, we dogs are not just a waste of space like cats. We can guard the house, for instance. And we can run very fast as well.

Horsey: So can we horses! We can do sixty kilometres an hour!

Doggy: So can some dogs. Greyhounds, for instance.

Horsey: Not when they’re carrying a human on their backs!

Catty: Well we cats can climb trees! You dogs and horses can’t.

Birdy: Bah! None of you can do what I can do: none of you can fly.

Fishy: Well, I can’t run, I can’t fly, and I can’t guard the house. But I’m the only one here that can swim!

Horsey: That’s not true! I’ve never tried it, but I’m sure I can swim.

Doggy: So can I!

Catty: So can I!

Doggy: No you can’t. Cats can’t swim. You’d sink like a stone. You’d drown in just half a metre of water!

Piggy: Well, I can do everything: run, fly and swim.

Catty: No, you can’t. You can’t fly!

Piggy: Yes, I can. Have you never heard people say “And pigs can fly!”
