To the local people the mountain is holy and you should not climb the mountain without sending prayers to the gods and you should not climb it if you think the mountain is angry. We call it Mount Everest.

In 1994 an expedition cleaned two and a half tons of waste from Everest. There are probably more than 50 tons of waste left on the mountain. Some of the rivers that run down the mountain are so dirty that you cannot drink the water.

FACEs

Base camp is at 5,200 metres. There can be more than a hundred people there, waiting for good weather, sometimes for many weeks. The climbers bring in tons of equipment and a lot of it is left on the mountain. The climbers spend the time in base camp drinking and partying.

6

More and more people try to climb the mountain. People pay a lot of money to get to the top and the very rich are sometimes carried to the top and down.

roCKs

The very rich are sometimes carried to the top and down.

1

The first men to climb the mountain and survive were Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. Today more than 650 people have reached the top. About 150 people have died there and many of the bodies are still stuck in the ice.

THrIlls

The top of the mountain at 8,850 metres is as big as half a tennis court. Each person that reaches the top leaves something behind to show that he has been there. Today the top looks like a dump.
