Good luck! Författarna

This is Me Hi! My name is Farha. I’m 16 years old. I live in a three-room flat in Birmingham, England, with my mum and my cat, Whiskers. My greatest passion in life is football. I play football three times a week and I also like to watch my favourite team, Aston Villa FC. My biggest dream is to become a professional football player.

Hello! My name is Mark and I’m 17 years old. I live with my dad, his new wife and my sister Melody just outside Melbourne, Australia. We have a big garden where we grow all kinds of vegetables. I’m a vegetarian so I don’t eat meat. My favourite food is lasagna. In the future I want to work as a nurse, but before I go to university, I’d like to travel around Europe.

A

Names, names, names! Your name is very important, not only to yourself but also to other people. It’s how you identify yourself. And it’s also how other people identify you. The first thing you say to people you meet for the first time is probably your name. You want other people to learn your name quickly, and remember it! It’s frustrating when people forget your name. Your name is not something you choose yourself – it’s been given to you by your parents. So how do parents make this important

decision – giving you a name that will stick with you for the rest of your life? Some people choose names because they happen to be fashionable – a football star, a famous artist or even a politician. Other parents choose names from their own families – perhaps a grandmother, a grandfather, a favourite aunt or uncle. In this way they keep traditions alive. Some parents choose names that are unusual or sound beautiful, important because that’s how they want their children to be. identify Unfortunately, some children are not very happy with their names. Their opinion of what a beautiful name is may be different from what their parents think. It’s no fun having a very odd name, is it? A name that sounds oldfashioned or strange.

viktigt identifiera decision beslut remember komma ihåg forget, forgot, forgotten glömma, glömde, glömt fashionable modern aunt moster, faster uncle morbror, farbror unusual ovanlig odd konstig old-fashioned gammalmodig either… or antingen … eller nickname smeknamn

Fortunately, you can change your name in various ways. Let’s say you have two first names, then you may use either of the two. Perhaps a short form – if your full name is Deborah and you don’t like it, you can call yourself Deb. Short and simple, isn’t it? Or why not use a nickname you like?

If you want a really short name, why not go for Ty or Bo (very popular in the US today), or even shorter – M or T? It’s easy to say, easy to write, easy to remember. Couldn’t be more practical than that! Talking about Bo, did you know that it could be either a boy or a girl? Just like Kim, Pat or Robyn? Do you know any more names that could be either male or female?

1. Your name is how other people believe / identify / choose you. 2. It is frustrating when people remember / tell / forget your name. 3. Your name is not something you know / choose / ask yourself. 4. Some parents choose names because they sound / taste / smell beautiful. 5. Fortunately, you can discuss / change / start your name in various ways. 6. Do you see / understand / know any more names that could be either male or female?

4 SPEAKING

What’s in a name?

Work in pairs or small groups. Discuss the following.

• How do you feel about your name? • Do you know what your name means? Explain. • If you could choose a name for yourself, what would it be? • How did your parents choose your name? Explain. • What name would you give a baby girl/a baby boy?

Answer like this I like/ I don’t like my name because... My name means‌ My parents named me‌ because‌ I would choose ... because ... I would name my baby‌ because ‌
