Chapter 1 The sun shines. The morning is warm. Jens rides his bike to the ramp. He is going skateboarding. Jens has been skating every day, all summer. He loves the speed and the wind in his hair. Skateboarding is his life. Jens leans his bike against the skate ramp. Nobody else is here. 5
Pity, he thinks. An audience would be fun. It is nice, though, to have the ramp to yourself. Jens lifts the board off his bicycle. With his foot, he sweeps a few pebbles from the ramp. He starts skating. Suddenly, a girl shows up. She stops by the ramp. She is carrying a large bag. Jens skates up to her. − Are you going to skate, too? he asks. The girl nods. 6
− I’m Maria, she says. I just moved here. Jens holds out his hand. − I’m Jens, he says. Jens gets up on his skateboard again. He wants to show what he can do. He skates fast and makes quick turns. Maria watches him. She smiles. Jens does a kick flip. That is when you spin the board around with your foot. − Cool, Maria says.
